Here is something to cheer up all FSX users, Mr Dave Garwood has just given me the OK to post the first screenshot of his latest FSX native aircraft, the post-war British GA classic.....the Auster J1 Autocrat.

This very pretty aircraft comes as a three seater (in two versions, both with and without comms fit) and includes all the native FSX features you love plus some things not seen before (as far as I know), like 'animated leather grab handles' that swing around in flight in the detailed but smooth VC. All switches are working and starts etc. can be done 'by the book', albeit a rather slim volume of the book. Quite basic, these early aircraft!!

These shots are of the latest (and possibly last) beta, a paint kit will be provided too, when she is released. She should be available in a few weeks, after Dave returns from a well earned family vacation. I will post some more shots later this weekend.

Who needs yet another Piper Cub!!!!

Very cool to see a good Auster for the flightsim. How nice and with a bit of modification of the ac file it'll be an Auster III as well. Finally! :D

Here are some more shots, including the VC (no 2D panel), which is pretty much as the real thing.

The compass now lives on the floor (that is the fuel gauge on the combing), as the real aircraft mounted it in the roof, using a mirror to actually read it by. FSX does not quite stretch to that!!

To add to the post here by Calysos, I too feel very privileged to be chosen as one of the Beta testers for Dave's upcoming Auster J1. He has pulled out all of the stops on this one and the attention to detail is just superb.

Even the strut fittings are a work of art. All the ribs and riblets are there making this a model that will fill in one of the gaps from a Classic British light aircraft.

Thanks for this one Dave. :ernae:

How does this compare to the Army's AOP9 Auster? I helped refurbish one for the museum - only a little bit mind, during "free lessons" while on my basic tech training. (very nearly 40 years ago...)

In terms of flying control and characteristics, the two types are miles apart...the Autocrat is mostly rudder and then aileron and elevator, whilst the AOP.9 is a more harmonised flying machine. Nothing from a 9 will fit an earlier Auster.

Martin

Useless fact: The mainwheels for the AOP.9 are DC-3 tailwheels.

It aint a cub!! :kilroy:

How many Cubs have you seen with side by side seating? No way is this a Cub, but a true British aeroplane with a wonderful pedigree and history and which is often overlooked by the likes of de Havilland, Miles and Percival. Virtually every British private pilot learnt to fly on Austers in the 50s and early 60s, before the infux of tricycle Cessna and Piper designs.

I see what you mean about the details BrianG and those ribs and riblets look great. I presume it has those lovely 3D gauges as well (as seen in the great Beaufighter)? It sure looks like it does in the VC screenshot.

Now, I'm off to buy a hat. Looks like I'll need one with that glass roofed cockpit.

One of my favourites. I have the full set of the Dave Molineaux (hope I spelt it right) Austers with a few Aussie paints.

Been through Airliners.net and found heaps of repaint ideas for this one.

Hope Dave is going to do the full suite of Austers, right up to the 6.

Cheers

This the perfect type to enjoy flying out of UK2000 series of airports, and choose the smaller ones only.

Dave did at one time state that the J1 is the one and only Auster he intends to make....other projects on the 'to do' list would most probably preclude any further Austers.

I think he has done an absolutely incredible job on this one and with modelling of this quality....anything he makes next will be ok with me. :ernae:

For those people looking for other Austers, have a look at Dave Molyneaux's wonderful Autocrat, Autocar and AOP.6 at http://www.classicbritishfiles.com.

All have been modelled on actual aeroplanes and I've been told port over to FSX quite well.

For anyone interested in what an Autocrat looks like in real life, here are a few of G-AIRC taken earlier in the year.
