The P-38 is alive and burning holes in the virtual skies. These are some early shots. The gauges are getting coding work done. Can see that the aircraft has maintained the excellent level of detail, and the cockpit shadowing is nice in DX-10 preview. Should also have some more shots of the exterior soon when we are done with some additional tweaks. As always comments are welcome, and thanks for taking the time to look.

I do enjoy staring at those shots, which means I must be looking at something impressive. The baked lighting alone seems to put that VC in a glass of it's own. It just adds so much depth and "feel", so much so I want to reach in and touch it. :icon_lol:

The VC is stunning!:medals:
I know it's still work in progress but what worries me is the dull grey of the exterior, looks like it is made of zinc... shouldn't it be more shiny?

...well, it is a WIP, and if you read the actual text above, it's pretty clear that the exterior is still in progress... However, just as an FYI, on that version, it isn't metal... it's grey painted metal.

Thanks. Texture Baking is not a new technology in general, but rather new in FSX. I have been doing this to a limited extend since IL2, but only recently started going full-on texture baking with my recent works on the F6F and F4U and now this. You can also see it in action on the Vision.

Im thinking about doing a short tutorial on the basics of texture baking. Its taken me YEARS though to hone this skill. Just glad its looking so well. Well worth all the time I put into it.

Same here. I am a 3DSMax user and that is one area I have never ventured into, but have been seeing some amazing results with it lately in FSX that make me want to learn.

Ther p-38 pit is looking great!! :monkies:

That tutorial is rather old, but it shows the basics. I use some extremely advanced and complex Vray materials to achieve the dirt in my WWII birds. I have it set to detect corners and folds, and it puts a separate (mostly darker) texture into those crevisis, simulating dirt getting into places you cant wipe down easy. You can see that were the canopy meets the edge of the cockpit. I post tutorials from time to time on my Youtube page, so keep an eye out for that!

The only comment I want to say is: Your p-38 looks awsome! I am looking forward to this P-38! Is it too early to talk about any features that might be included in this project, like engine management, engine failures, realistic start-up features, etc.

Again, the model looks great.:applause:

How if flies is not my job, only how it looks ;) But the guys at FSD/Milviz are very talented and im sure they will do her right!

Not going to put my foot in my mouth quite yet as ideas are still being kicked around as to what will be done on the feature end. :kilroy: I will say that she will not disappoint though. That is why I did not post screens of the outside as it is not quite ready. There are a few external shots though over on the FSD main page for those that wish to see the externals in sim.

WOW!!:jump: Love that last shot!

You guys are going to have to start posting performance specs soon... the Round The World Crew who flies in FSX is really going to be interested in those perf specs!!

Masterful artwork Gibby!! :medals:

Im sure they will match close with the real P-38J and L. You can view performance charts on the P-38 here.

DUH! I forgot that Sir 'DCC' Lightning has been involved in some capacity... hopefully in the performance specs department as well.

Concerning the metal finish, it has been pointed out to me by the two experts on this subject that I was indeed, incorrect. It is, after all, a bare metal finish and not painted. I do apologize for not only the confusion but also for the statement negating that.

So, we will be fixing this and bringing it into the BMF state in the next couple of days. Screenies will be shown soon.

In terms of what types of failures/fuel/prop/hydraulics/oil systems will be functional, I will leave that to Chuck, FSD and DCC who are all working on this one together. Just so you are aware, DCC is also doing the soundset for this plane.

Moving along and coming soon!

That is about the coolest technical blog I ever read.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop DCC... some real interesting looks into how sound works! :applause:

Interesting read, sound is so under rated or too difficult to get right that big part of simulation is lost. I look forward to hearing more about your progress with the P-38 project.
