Shoot, the P6M was a better performer than the '52 in alot of respects (operational utility, forward deployable) and is still one of the best low level performing large aircraft yet. I do not even think the B-1 could match it, and certainly only exceeds is in bulk warload. I love the studies for the nuclear powered variants! The hot end of that engine would have been really hot! The maintainers wouldnt have been too thrilled!

Actually, the radar antenna could be put in the spinner, which was what Douglas planned for the Skyshark. Or, you could use off board sensors to acquire, data link the targeting information to the shooter. The AIM-120 would cruise in on its autopilot, and switch on its radar for terminal homing. This has been demonstrated on a cheap and dirty AIM-120 SAM system mounted on a HMMWV, and is in use on a number of AAMs,SAMs and ASMs. Or put the radar in the nose of the float, or in a tip float.
