View Full Version : SOH A2A P-51D Group Flight?

Since the A2A P-51D is getting so much attention on here, both from users and painters, I thought it would be cool to schedule a group flight where everyone could use available repaints. It would be especially cool to get some of the A2A guys on board.

Ideally someone could come up with a historical flight plan for us to do. It would be great seeing a whole squadron of P-51's flying together on multiplayer.

Please post if you are interested. If we get enough people we will work on a schedule and flight plan.

I can give you somewhere to fly from... I'm just trying to make the ruddy AI work at Bodney. It'll take off fine, but then just announces "Going around", "Going around", "Going around"...

Darned if I can work it out, right now, but the place will work fine for a fly-out or fly-in in multiplayer.

For those interested, it is also posted at the A2A forums: http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=15753

Please post if you are at all interested so we have an idea of how many people might make the flight.

Back a few years ago when the original WOP P-51 came out a group of us put together the very informally named "WOP Warbirds Touring Group". A couple of us took the time each week to organize the flight plan for that week. We also developed a silly but workable system to make sure that anyone who wanted to join in, knew what paint schemes folks were going to fly in that week.

Most weeks we were averaging a half dozen or so aircraft but then a couple of times things just clicked and we had a few pretty nice sized squadrons flying for the day. On one of the Caribbean legs we had somewhere around 20 aircraft at one point in the flight but dropped down to abot 12 - 14 for a good portion of that day.

One of my favorite aspects of the group was that one of our main flyers brother owned the real P-51D "Double Trouble Two" and brought alot of valuable and interesting info on operating the P-51 into the flights from his personal experiences in that aircraft. BTW He's a current SOH member, but hangs out over in the other "dark side". :)

A couple of the guys did manage to organize very well thought out "real" WOP B-17 bomber missions with escorts. The only problem I ever saw with that is that almost everyone wanted to fly the escorts and the few that did take on the bomber rolls wouldn't last the length of the mission. I don't know how many times I ended up being the only B-17 to last the duration.

All of those original WOP Touring Group threads are still over in the various WOP forums. I had a lot of fun with those guys.

Here's a few from back then:

Count me in, I need to download some paint jobs now.

Perhaps we could fly on Gamespy in the Fly-in room. This way it could be an all day event and different groups could take off at different times. We would just need to know which airport to start from. I would be interested in doing a couple shorter hops throughout the day, but not any 2-4 hr. hops.

I have time Sun-Tuesday and I am West Coast USA.

The 109 would be more than welcome to join as long as it is a stock paint and is the WOP II FSX version. After all, we gotta have someone to chase after. :ernae:

P.S. I've got a banner up in my sig to support the event. Feel free to wear it until we fly.

I'm not really sure if we're going to allow other aircraft or not. It's kind of a toss up. Yes it would be great to have a bomber or some enemy aircraft in the lead, but if other people don't have it, gamespy could replace it with something stupid like a 737. I don't know about you but I'd rather not follow a default 737 on a WWII flight. For the sake of ease and compatibility, we may be sticking with just the WOPII P-51D.

Sounds like the most sensible route.

And, if you want to fly a custom repaint, then perhaps provide links/file names in a dedictated thread, just so we're all not showing up as Snooks!

I can do a few more blue nosed repaints if needed (or any other squadron)
All from the same squadron would be cool, especially if you're recreating the WWII feel..
There should already be a lot of blue and red noses, or you could try some of the Iwo Jima paints, I've painted a lot of the 506th aircraft.

Why don't we find out what people have that plan on showing up? Also I would like to remind people to go on in advance and get their Voice Communication working.

I have the WOPII that came with the P40 and all the standard goodies. I downloaded about 6 paints last night.

Also, if you put this line in your FSX.CFG file ****by replaceing the original "DefaultLobby=FreeFlight"**** You will be able to log in a whole lot easier.

As I've said umpteen times, unfortunately, flying online isn't my thing. I find it a lot more hassle than it is worth. But I'll stick my hand up a long way to ask for more blue nose P-51Ds (particularly a remade Cripes a Mighty using the new paint kit) in case I ever do get this darned AI to work... Yes, I'm back in ADE and FSX on the other PC again with Spitfires calling "Going Around", "Going around", "Going around"... Actually, you know what? I can see a major advantage to multiplayer flying! :engel016::icon_lol:

Jankees that would be great if you could paint at least a few blue nose schemes from the same squadron. It would be nice if you could make new ones with DDS textures for best performance and looks. I for one would be very grateful. Last night me, and RyanJames, and Kiwikat went for a flight to get the screenshot and it was extremely fun flying in formation. I cant wait to get this group going. Sometime we will have to make a list of the paints everyone will be using. I am going to go and download all the dds ones out right now.

I am going to go online now on gamespy and create a room in the "Adventures" server Called SOH P51 Test for anyone that would like to do com checks and get their stuff set up.

It will be at Interlaken, some great mountain flying and nice visuals.

I had a look, and found 7 blue noses that I've painted so far. I do believe there's also a few by John Terrell around.
I also found a lot of 357th repaints, another idea for a squadron flight..
Did I mention that I've never flown online, and have no idea how to set it up?

I have only tried to fly online once the other night and had a ton of trouble with it. I kept getting disconnected and it seemed that the AA and AF in the multiplayer side wasn't working. In the sim there really aren't any "jaggies" anywhere but when I did manage to connect to a session and get in my plane it was like AA wasn't even on if that makes sense. Is there something that I don't know about? I think that this would be fun if I could get it to work. I would like to use my Big Beautiful Doll repaint that I just did.

I've fixed the AI problem with Bodney, but instead have discovered a silly mistake that I made with the airfield layout... I'll fix that tomorrow, apologise to the guys on FSDeveloper who have tried to help me for being a total muppet, and hopefully, if anyone is vaguely interested, you'll have a blue nosed pony stable by the weekend.

I really don't believe that I missed the pattern altitude being set to 1500m (pushing 5000') AGL. :173go1:

Going to sleep now before I bang my head off something solid and break it. (The thing I headbutt, that is...)

As long as it is available to the public, sure. I think I am going to keep this to just P-51D's. Assuming we have a successful flight, we can add other aircraft in the future.

Does anyone have a good flightplan in mind? Something around 2 hours would be ideal.

For routing, how about a (semi) historical flight from Prestwick, Scotland, to Bodney? Basically simulate the end of a ferry flight across the pond... Route seems to be about 300mi so should work out OK time wise.

TS takes 2 seconds to setup... Besides the gamespy audio is way too quiet to hear over 10+ Merlins. Gamespy audio is simply not an option.

I'll be putting up a poll for dates soon. Stay tuned.

I'd also like some more ideas for a historical flight plan. I'm going to do some research after work tonight.

Major_Spittle
June 10th, 2009, 15:48
Will the server be set up with gamespy audio? My last experience with teamspeak was frustrating and I have never had an issue with gamespy unless someone else didn't have their mic working right. I actually only hear pilots on my headset and all other sounds are over my room speakers.

Let me know if you are going to be doing any practice runs, I am off Sun-Wed this week and should be able to make some time. Will install teamspeak again and we should get this thread sticky'd so you can give out details and post pics for people so they know what to expect.

On another note:

SOH needs more fly-Ins and such. Everyone should download Piglets little acrobatic plane for a separate fly in sometime. Maybe make a regular SOH gamespy server every weekend at the same time and place. We could have a sticky for it updating what the plan is for the coming weekend, ie plane, flight plan...... I enjoy having a few beers and flying with fellow SOHians. :applause:

For me personally it is not required that everybody flies a mustang from the same Squadron or fighter group. It looks very nice, but you can recognise each other easier if you haave a more unique paint.

I couldn't agree more. Although I may not be able to make the P-51 flight I'd definitely like to see a few "virtual airshows" and fly-ins throughout the year. Maybe we could do a gathering of Corsairs with the A2A one sometime in the near future :ernae:

Hi Guys
I felt so envious of this, I just went off and purchased this bird at A2A:jump:

Is there an update for it that I can't see? Only I have big transparent edges around the VC gauges! I have posted at the A2A forum, but now see that posts are delayed while moderated. Seems a strange thing to do.

Also, I see from these WONDERFULL screenshots, there's plenty of repaints. Where are the bulk of them uploaded - here?

I thought the FSX-X P51 was good, but this a hoot to fly:jump::jump::applause::applause:

I'd just like to recommend this little thing for anyone who regularly flies online/flies around AI traffic/uses FS Recorder to fly formations, or whatever else you might fancy involving other aircraft:

http://secure.simmarket.com/a-constable-traffic-sounds-fsx-extreme-edition-2009.phtml

There's a P-51 soundset in there, and a Spitfire (which is probably the better of the two, and still a Merlin engine). Get those sounds on the go, and your squadron of P-51s will sound a whole lot better than if you have default, stupidly quiet Cessna sounds!

Not sure if it's been brought up on here before, but for anyone who's missed it, it's certainly worth a purchase.

Here's the link to teamspeak. http://teamspeak.netfire.com/releases/ts2_client_rc2_2032.exe

Never pay a dime for it. As for multiplayer in general, make sure you got a gamespy account. You can get one by clicking on the multiplayer tab in FSX. Registering for an account will be an option there. Then you can log into gamespy.

I'm still working on a server for all of us. The people I've been trying to contact haven't responded. I can't make a server due to my internet only being mid DSL. My servers always show a ping of -1.

Does anyone belong to a gamespy group or have a server we could use? I guess I haven't been asking the right people... :mixedsmi:

Also, those of you who haven't voted for a day yet, please do so. Thanks!

I'm expecting around 10 pilots to attend. It is possible we might have more. However, we have decided to limit it just to the P-51D. You could fly the Luftwaffe variant if you wanted, but it has to be a WOP II P-51D. It is going to be a D-Day memorial flight starting in England and finishing in France. It will be on June 28th at 1900 zulu. If you plan on attending, please show up an hour early so we can get everything going smoothly for the flight.

It isn't too late for anyone else who might want to join too.
