View Full Version : World Flight

Feeling restless with the SOH threads wiped out from the crash. Decided to point the nose into the air and document the flight here. I flew around the world back in 2004-2005 in the Avro Shackleton and enjoyed the task. It took me about 4 months to complete working it in and around real life duties. Probably won't get that far this time but who knows. Keeps me out of trouble when Merc Air is on hiatus.

A few guidelines:

-Fly in real time & with real weather.
-Follow all ATC procedure as best as possible.
-No slewing or time compression.
-Fly by the numbers for each aircraft. No "RTW" style full throttle/dive to the deck flights.
-Will use both FSX & FS2004 and a variety of aircraft.

Willy had a similar type flight going down in the Cantina.

I started mine back up where I left off tonite with a short hop to Hiroshima.

Is your's gonna be online? I might try to catch up with ya.

Thanks Willy! I have been flying offline so far. As you know FSX doesn't work well with FSHost. I guess I could do a few windowed mode flights along the way though. Headed down the island chain towards Tinidad to eventually make a S. Atlantic crossing.

Had a nice flight today along the Florida Panhandle down through the Tampa area to Naples. Landed in a mild rainshower. From the Duenna it looks like I made a straight shot across the Gulf.

Nice shots, Moses! If you have pilot records turned on, you might want to look into the Visit Series (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=143). It's pretty cool. You get "rewards" on your pilot records screen for visiting countries and airports. I just got the Solomon Islands flag after an extensive survey of that region.

Willy
September 30th, 2008, 20:29
Pilot records must be a FSX thing. Interesting to know though. If FS9 had it, I'd probably have it maxed out. I've got almost 3000hrs in the pilot log already and that's not figuring in the first year I flew it.

Moses03
October 1st, 2008, 05:25
Thanks Paul. I do have the pilot records turned on so I might look into the Visit Series addon.

That is a lot of flight time Willy! I have a little proggy that monitors engine hours on all FS9 aircraft. Need to check that again. The last I looked, the Do-335 was at or near the top of the list from all the RTW race & practice runs.

PRB
October 1st, 2008, 16:15
Willy, there is a "log flights" option in the FS9 general settings, but I'm not sure where it logs the flights. There is a logbook.txt file in the My Documents/FS9 folder, but it's always empty. And even if you don't select Log Flights, the engine hours for all planes ever flown in FS9 are still maintained, which is what, I suspect, Moses's "proggy" is looking at.

M, what "proggy" is that? That would be cool. I'd like to see how many FS9 hours I have in what plane!

FS2004 Aircraft Usage Log. This program lets you see how many hours you have flown each of your aircraft. You will see a list that can be sorted alphabetically or according to hours flown. An update feature lets you see the hours each has been flown since the last run of this program. By Scott L. Goodrick.

Willy
October 1st, 2008, 20:29
If you'll look in the same folder that your FS9.cfg is in there'll be another folder named aircraft. Inside that folder are folders for every aircraft folder you have inside your main FS Aircraft folder. The text docs inside those folders will give you the engine hours on that aircraft. For instance, my Beech 18 non floater has 54 hours and some change on each engine right now. I suspect that is where Moses' proggy is getting it's info.

When in the windowed mode, there is an option to see your pilot log in FS9. It'll give the aircraft, any notes you've attached to that flight and the flight hours for day, night and instrument for that flight.

Long grueling flight to Cayenne, French Guiana (SOCA). I hugged the coast as best as possible. Better to put down a mile offshore than to be forced down into the jungle. They might never find the wreckage.

I had plans on switching to the King Air or even a small business jet for long stretches like this but I am determined to see how far I can go in the Goose for now. The flight to Ascension Island will probably force the issue on that.

Rubber wings??? How'd you get those? :costumes:

And we'll need to know how you earned the "bus ticket home" award as well...

BTW, when you install the visit series, it looks at all your previous flights and credits you with whatever you've already earned.

Moses03

The rubber wings came from Tutorial 4. The bus ticket home was earned from doing the "Cessna engine out" Swiss flight I believe.

Made it to Fernando De Noronha (SBFN). It’s as far as I can go before making the flight to Ascension Island. I’m looking at about 1100 miles. Too far for the Goose unless I try to outfit it with a temporary center (cabin) tank that would hold about 350 gallons. I’m tempted to ship the Goose over to Africa and maybe rent a King Air to cross the Atlantic.

Moses03
October 20th, 2008, 16:07
Hopefully I won't need a paddle or any flotation device. :kilroy:

I made arrangements for the Goose to be shipped across on a Brazilian tanker. I will have to change my flight plan though as she is steaming to the Cape Verde Islands, not Ascension. Bit sad seeing her all tied down on the deck ready to sail away. The seagulls seemed to be enjoying the spectacle anyways.

Ha, this is funny because I am also in the middle of a round the world trip in the Goose, also starting in TX!

Actually, I'm flying with a friend on-line who is using the MAAM DC-3. We are doing it more for site seeing than speed though. We went down through central and south america before heading to Ascension Island.

I used the Goose the whole way. I figured I could take everything off the plane not necessary and let him haul it in the DC-3, while I added some auxiliary tanks inside the plane (adding the weight to my load). We are in Africa right now, approximately where you are at. Maybe we'll see you in the skies! :mixedsmi:

Some where here in this mess of threads Willy explained that syndrome. The cure is to take off and head a direction intent on flying in the end you will have traveled around the world. Don't bother plannig the trip around the world.

The people manning the weather station don't get much traffic through here and were glad to have visitors. The island also served as a DEW (Distant Early Warning) site in the late 1950's. Much of the infrastructure is still in place from that time.

Note: Hit the 100 hour mark on the leg.

Take off to Canada eh?

Set the Goose down at Port Hardy, British Columbia (CYZT) this evening. Not much to report other than a drafty cabin and a lot of frigid air. Could have possibly made it to Vancouver without the headwind.

Note: Discovered a little quirk about FSX this flight. When I zoomed in to the pilot figure, he blinked! Never noticed that before.

Blinky the pilot:

Feet dry in the lower 48. Bellingham, Washington (KBLI) is the place. Enjoyed the view of downtown Vancouver at night as I passed by.

Nice hop down to Walla Walla Municipal (KALW). Was treated to some nice scenery in and around the Lake Wenatchee area.

A short flight through big sky country down to Boise (KBOI). Pretty soon I'm going to run out of nice scenery.

Note: Thumbs up to JM for his latest Duenna!

Yep on the Thumbs up.

It is nice how it tracks the flight path and not just the straight line between two points. :ernae:

Hopped the border down to the East shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Followed Route 84 for the most part. This was one of those "$100 hamburger" flights. Fort Ranch (2UT3) will serve you a full pound beef patty with all the trimmings.

Note: Duenna shows 2UT3 as UT29.

Utah faded into the distance as I made my way across to Grand Junction, Colorado (KGJT). Skirted the northern stretches of the Moab desert.

The little Goose is still going strong.

Note: Duenna shows departure airport as UT29 instead of 2UT3.

And so goes the world flight with a hop back to Frisco, Texas (DDJ). :wiggle: Satisfying to finish what I started.

Had originally planned on stopping in Albuquerque or maybe Dalhart in the Texas panhandle but was feeling a little homesick and decided to go all the way from Grand Junction. Besides, we have a big race looming and I wanted to wrap up the adventure.

144 days to complete. (Started on Sept 27, 2008)

Misc:
-Yes, I did crash once. About 30 min after I departed 2UT3 the first time, I left to go help around the house and had not adjusted my otto for enough height. When I checked on the Goose it had hit a 8500' ridge just east of Ogden, Utah. No worries, was just a scratch. ;)

Moses signing off from DDJ...

Dave- Nothing really to write home about on the FSX rewards. Just a lot of seaplane hours racked up.
