I have been splashing some paint around with the new high res paintkit for the A2A P-51. I felt the Commonwealth birds had been rather neglected and decided it was time they were appreciated more. So far I have completed four bare metal paints and will be starting on camo ones shortly. Along with the aircraft I also changed the pilot clothing to better reflect the Commonwealth uniforms and made the correct shoulder boards for the correct aircraft so if you select a Squadron Leader's bird the pilot is wearing Squadron Leader's shoulderboards and likewise for the Wing Commander.

First up is an aircraft from 234 Sqn RAF.

Next are two aircraft from 442 Sqn RCAF, one carrying a Squadron Leader's pennant and the other a Wing Commander's pennant.

Finally an aircraft from 3 Sqn RAAF based in Laverino, Italy early in 1945.

I should have them packaged up sometime tomorrow and will let you know when they are available.

Nice - any RNZAF ones planned??

Would you believe that in all my research and Google image searching I have not come across a single RNZAF mustang!

If you know of some online reference (preferably with colour piccies) can you point me at them and I will see what I can do.

EDIT
Doing a specific search for 'RNZAF + Mustang + P-51' has turned up some possible candidates.....watch this space! ;)

Thanks Tim, I have just found a bunch of info on that very aircraft including a page on the Hyper Scale website that gives lots of good photos of a plastic model build of the same plane. It looks like that is a contender as there is some good research material with it too.

Cracking stuff!!!!

Really loooking forward to some of these, the NZ one with the bar does look like it would make a cracking scheme. The Italy stang and its tail is very different in a good way of course. :ernae:

Paul . ill source any photos , strange thing other than Grahame B's the highest fly hour Mustang ended up with a grand total of only 540 hrs , i do have a B/W pic here but i guess a lot of artistic licence maybe required , NZ2406 still has the US bars .

I was thinking the same Stiz at least for the roundels and fin flashes. I grabbed those off a well known (and often wrong) website as it was easier than making my own. I just found a three page PDF document that lists all the RAF colours with F.S., RGB and CMYK values and also has paint chips for them and they look much closer to the 'real' thing.

I need to revisit all the paints anyway once I have found out where the gun sleeves are hiding on the texture so I will check the roundel colours at the same time.

The rest of the paint (well, the metal) looks weathered and quite dirty, so it's probably best to just fade the roundels into it, perhaps with reduced opacity, or slightly desaturated colours.

I used the values from this PDF file .....

http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/colourcharts/Digital%20RAF%20WW2%20Colours.pdf

....and they look much more realistic now.

I also found the missing gun sleeves and corrected those in the AC with yellow LEs.

I just uploaded the four repaints above (after making a few fixes so consider those screenshots as WIPs ;) ) so they should be available within the next 24 hours once the Admins clear them.

Heres a pic I took at Warbirds over Wanaka in 2006 ..and just seen it do a display today at the local airport for the D Day display.

NZ2415 (ZK-TAF) is really the grandaddy of all NZ warbirds as its been in the country for over 20 years.
Its not a NZ original Mustang but there are two still flying - one in the US with Kermit Weeks and the other in the UK with Maurice Hammond (neither in NZ schemes)

I've painted a whole bunch of NZ Mustangs:

"miss Torque":
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?lloc=downloads&loc=downloads&page=info&FileID=11147

NZ 2413:
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?lloc=downloads&loc=downloads&page=info&FileID=10773

NZ2410, 2415 & 2423:
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?lloc=downloads&loc=downloads&page=info&FileID=10725

that should work in FSX, 1024 textures only though..

Naki

Oh of course Jankees - I knew about those but I didnt know that they would work in FSX

Cheers

I just finished my first camo repaint for the P-51 after spending days fighting with the paint kit, some parts are really difficult to locate but now I have one done I can use it as a basis for more. ;)

This one is a paint for the 'Vintage Wings of Canada' P-51 which is currently flying the NA airshow circuit. More info can be found here.....

Three more Commonwealth Mustangs rolled out of the paint shop today, this time for the RNZAF. All three aircraft are from the early 1950's as the Mustangs ordered just prior to the end of the war didn't arrive until just after the war ended and they were immediately 'mothballed' for six years or so.

2 Sqn RNZAF.

I just finished yet another Commonwealth P-51. :isadizzy:

This repaint depicts an aircraft of 112 Sqn RAF based in Cervia, Italy in May 1945. 112 became known as the 'Shark Squadron' after they first painted their Kittyhawk (P-40) aircraft with the shark mouth logo while serving in the Middle East. 112 Sqn got the idea from German Bf110s of the Zerstörer Geschwader 76 seen in Europe. This imagery was later adopted by many Kittyhawk/P-40 units and was perhaps most famously applied to the AVG aircraft in Burma and China. 112 Sqn continued with the theme when they switched to the Mustang Mk.III and IV.

I will get it uploaded later today.

Lots of info on 112 Sqn aircraft on this page....

http://www.mts.net/~royb/raf_kittyhawK_codes.html

... the Stangs start about 3/4 of the way down the page.

The entire site is full of very interesting info on 112 Sqn, the home page is below.....click on the links at the bottom of the page to jump to different areas (some of which appear to be located on different sites).
