Hi all.

Some of our work is getting into the realm of GIS applications.

MaskedRider has been using TatukGIS Viewer to export GIS shapefile data as images.

FGIS is a tool devoloped by the University of Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. It is no longer updated for public use, but older versions can still be found. It uses TatukGIS technology!

Nearly a full-fledged GIS application.

Hi Dick

fGIS looks like a great program. But I keep getting the message below when I try to manipulate anything other than the first layer (shp file) that I loaded. Doesn't matter if a restart, it only allows me to choose the first layer (shp file) that I loaded the first time I opened the program.

I can't figure the message out either since the path it calls out doesn't even exist on my computer.

My C:\Program Files\TatukGIS folder contains no DK8 folder nor anything else beyond that.

Was ist los?

:d

The detail in the message is debug info based on the original source code on the machine it was originally compiled on. It is of no help to you but it would tell the original programmer what code line in what source file triggered the error.

As I say not a lot of help. Just don`t think there is anything wrong with your installation just because the path shown doesn`t exist.

Assertion errors can occur anywhere the programmer has set an assert(expression) test. So the actual problem could be pretty much anything. Only the original programmer would know

Hi Martin

Thanks for the explanation.

Obviously, I must be doing something or doing it in a way that fGIS doesn't like.

And since I don't know enough about it or GIS or shp files and all that stuff to really have the clearest idea in the world just what I want to be doing with fGIS in the first place- it could be just about anything!

For now I think I will probably stick with the TatukGIS Viewer. I can get it to do what I want it to do and it doesn't yell at me and give me a hard time. :d

I will come back to fGIS from time to time just to see if I can get it to behave itself. As Dick says it does have a lot of neat features that Tatuk doesn't have- one of which I hope- is the ability to have User Defined Custom extents in its the Export to Image function.

That is only available in the payware version of TatukGIS Viewer.

Discovered quite a useful feature in this program....
You can export Layers as MapInfo files.
It's going to be quite easy for me to add a .mif import routine to the cfs2autocoast tool so these can be directly imported into a ground2k project: .shp->fGis->.mif->cfs2autocoast->.lwm->ground2k->.bgl! This would be much more accurate and less error-prone than having to use an intermediate Raster conversion.

Hi Sander.

SBuilder also can provide you with a possible path.

Sbuilder exports a BLN text file that you might alter for your program.

Sbuilder imports FS2004 LWM and VTP bgls.... and can take the "hooks" off the VTP2 lines.

So there is a possible path from FS2004->SBuilder->cfs2autocoast->Ground2K.

Hi Dick,
Thanks for the tip; could be a massive timesaver.
I've managed to import the Mapinfo file exported by fGis, and it turns out to still be pixellated data that would need processing (see screenshot), so I think I'll stick with fs9 conversions for the basic world for now.

Cool, with the sBuilder SBX files, it's also possible to retrieve the fs9 altitude of lakes, so we can just convert those poly's to scasm AREA16 for cfs2.
