You were wise - I am so so disappointed with this compared to the quality of the Gladiator and the Pitts.

I have immediately deleted it from FSX.

I think that this model will be a tough call, for many, because of the availability of the excellent freeware from David Garwood and co. Probably a purchase for those especially interested in the Rapide.

Have we got the same model gajit? For me it has a very similar "feel" to the Gamma, Pitts and Gladiator and I really like the look of the vc.

Congratulations on the release! I will be picking this up as soon as the funds allow (need to recoup from latest spending spree). It's really nice to see you releasing the planes that you do, all very unique. The screenshots look fantastic!

It is tempting on the VC alone, but the exterior is personally no better than Dave's FSX DH-89.

Still that VC is dreamy good, it does have a .psd Paint Kit, and the price is most proper! :ernae:

Icarus have done their best and with the aircraft to come, like the DH4 and the Grumman Duck I think they deserve all the luck they can get.

I agree that the VC looks good, but unless the Rapide is your favourite aircraft, the price difference in the two models exceeds the difference in quality.

Without the freeware model, I would have bought this one.

What's the point of having more than one version of an aircraft in a sim when one is freeware?
Dave's version is great and arrived on the scene just as I had upgraded hardware and software for FsX and for someone who doesn't usually fly anything more recent than 1955 it was a superb present. However the Icarus version is not a copy of Dave's, it stands on it's own as an alternative, modeled in that now familiar Icarus way and as such deserves attention on it's own merits.

tiger moth it should one of next aircrafts, actually same gladiator's modeller it's working on the Storch(he made also the dragon)...but it will look as a tiger moth not as a dornier x...it's a promise lol

if there is someone with a good engine sound for tiger moth it's the only thing missing.

have to say thanks to manuele villa and the references he sent me...ala littoria now it's my favourite skin...easy but 1935 time looking era

it could be interesting make sm-55...but gauges references are pratically impossible...my dream was an sm55 with mission adventures balbo...but not sm-55 still present except a bad brasilian version...and know how was panel design and instruments....if you can help with that manuele...it's much appreciated. I have all "istituto luce" balbo movies with sm55 but also there only few seconds of the panel and only a part.

Got a question in all fairness (well actually 2)
This is a native FSX model, right? and the freeware version, is it FSX native as well or a port over?
Icarus, dude, don´t get hurt by someone´s dislike on your product, trust me, you can´t please everyone, and there always be someone who finds your creations awesome..

you are right...but each aircraft it's like a son. if only one...and it is actually only one..it's unhappy i am unhappy too. i am too much temperamental on reaction...but this is a passion not a job for me(it's more a job for the other modeller i pay before i sell a model..he take the money me the criticism lol)...i am lucky i do what i like.

OK, so i went and downloaded the freeware version, keep in mind i don´t have the payware one, BUT based on pics posted here:
The Icarus version have a more advanced virtual cockpit, freeware version, well, it stands as it is, but most definitely not MY cup of coffee, i´ll say Icarus nailed, big time.
Exteriors, well, the freeware version "feels" like it was intended for fans to make new paint schemes for it, while the Icarus version seems more "complete".Either way, both are great as they are, and i really think you have to be a Dragon Rapide fan in order to acquire the Icarus version, if you´re like me (not a rapide fan, for that matter) well, the free one will do, I for one, deleted it after a few hops, but just because is not my thing.

Well first report hehe. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say and many people consider this an ugly aircraft. To me the Dragon Rapide looks great. It also is a classic design and it must have been pretty hot for its time!

Exterior model: 9/10
This Icarus version is pretty neat. The exterior model is really smooth and so far I couldn't spot any oddities where different parts of the model merge.

Texturing: 7/10
The textures look good, though slightly lowrez and on some paints the lines aren't 100% smooth. However I actually like it better than I initially thought when looking at the official screenshots. Not as catchy and artful as the Gladiator but still a good score.

Virtual Cockpit: 8/10
Love most of the textures in the VC. It looks really neat and is visually the most appealing part of the plane. Nice lighting, good functionality. It doesn't get 9 out of 10 simply because when looking outside I only see the propellor spin but the engine isn't modelled. This takes away some realism.

Sound pack: 8/10
Now I have no idea how these engines sound in real life and I am really just only listening to the sound itself. It's a good soundpack, nuff said. :P

Flight model: no score.
Haven't flown her long enough to give an honest score on that. So far it handles ok though.

Coin balance: 9/10
For this price with these models and so many neat paints to pick from? Sweet deal I'd say. I'm glad I bought it!

So overall I'd say an early score of 8 out of 10. I'm happy with it.:ernae:

And now some pics to backup the talking. ;)

Hi Icarus, I have downloaded your Rapide yesterday evening: it's a beautiful aircraft and flyies very well and stable (in my opinion of course!).
In Italy the Dragon was built from Breda:
"The Breda Ba.44 was a biplane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biplane) airliner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airliner) developed in Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy) in the mid-1930s and which saw limited military service when impressed into the Regia Aeronautica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regia_Aeronautica) as transports.
The design of the Ba.44 was developed from that of the de Havilland Dragon Rapide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_Dragon_Rapide), for which Breda had purchased a manufacturing licence. Breda engineers believed that making some changes would better suit the aircraft to the company's manufacturing techniques, the biggest differences in the prototype Ba.44 being the design of the cockpit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockpit) and empennage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empennage), and the change to locally-produced Colombo S.63 (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Colombo_S.63&action=edit&redlink=1) engines. In production, however, these were changed back to the same de Havilland Gipsy Six (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_Gipsy_Six) engines as the Dragon Rapide." (Wikipedia)

I hope sincerly that you will build S55... It will be fantastic!

Best regards,
Luca

In production, however, these were changed back to the same de Havilland Gipsy Six (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_Gipsy_Six) engines as the Dragon Rapide." (Wikipedia)

I hope sincerly that you will build S55... It will be fantastic!

Best regards,
Luca

Hi Luca,
The Breda Ba.44 history in Wikipedia is WRONG !!!!!
Breda, probably, NEVER purchased the manufacturing licence from De Havilland.
The '44 was simply inspired to Dragon, the differences between the two planes were very big. As for Fiat G.18V, for example, Gabrielli visited the Douglas's factory and his plane was very similar to Douglas DC.2, but absolutely NOT the same.

Not my cup of tea, however, if I was at all interested in the subject I would be first in line. Beautiful job on the exterior and especially on the VC.

yes of course...me too don't love all aircrafts..modern for example are not my favourite. thanks for your words bob

just for curiosity...which are your preferences? we could add some on our list if we able to do...each new idea or model is welcome and if we can we will build

@ Manuele: your report is very interesting. Of course Wikipedia is not ever affordable, but however I find it a good point to research in aviation's history.

@ Icarus: I'm looking for your 1.1 version (new textures!)...

i have seen that with some skins as this one..the dragon paint looks a little more metallic so i m adding also another dragon with more reflection, so with v1.1 version models will be four.

Hi Cazzie,
I'm OK, but, unfortunately, I haven't a PC at home at this moment and my works proceed very slowly because I'm working at office during the pauses.....:angryfir::angryfir:
However I just finished the skins (6 liveries for 4 different versions) for the Stefano's FIAT G.12 and I'm working on the Breda Ba.65 I started a loooong time ago (at the end of the FIAT G.18V development).

Well Peter,
Have you purchased the Icarus model and if so on what basis do you draw your conclusion? I have enjoyed Dave Garwood's model for a number of years now; originally in Fs9 and more recently in FsX, in fact Dave's Rapide was the first add-on in my FsX install. However Dave's version does date back to 2004/5 (?) and as such does not have the refinements of his newer Beaufighter and Hunter in FsX which are marvellous (payware quality) FsX models.
I particularly like the vc in the Icarus aeroplane which adds to the immersion in my opinion.
So I feel we should make our choices based on our personal preferences and then get on with the job of flying and perhaps attempt to avoid such blunt statements that serve neither to offer constructive criticism nor give informative reasons for such statements.

"If you cant say any thing nice don't say any thing at All"!!!!!!!!!!"

The trouble with that is you can end up with a misleading impression. However, I'm right behind saying things niceLY wherever possible, so here goes.

I care greatly for the DH89 and I’m a little disappointed with this package. Firstly, I see a VC that is quite blurry and low-res, especially the big central turn coordinator and the switches below the voltmeters on the left. It may be some setting on my system, but I do have global texture resolution set very high and texture maximum load is 2048. I've included a picture of the DG pit (G-AKIF) for comparison.

Externally, the model is missing a few parts that are prominent and clearly visible on the real thing - for example, look at the top & bottom of the outer struts - and it also seems a little too blunt and tubby all over, like a Rapide that’s been at the doughnuts. There is a very good variety of textures, all well-researched and nicely drawn, but to my old eyes they look a bit flat and none of them gives me much sense of wood or fabric

This is my second Icarus model and almost certainly won't be my last - they are good people to deal with. This Rapide sounds good and flies nicely, and overall it’s not a bad 13 quid’s worth, but my personal opinion (hopefully politely expressed) is that the freeware Garwood model captures the look, feel and character of this grand old lady rather better.

You were wise - I am so so disappointed with this compared to the quality of the Gladiator and the Pitts.

I have immediately deleted it from FSX.

the activation code it's good also to check who missed the 1.1 (when customer activates the code it shows the version), i have posted the new here for this reason.

SpaceWeevil, there is always possibility to emprove a product when someone comments what he likes and what not in a clearly and understable way as you did it, thanks. Sometimes problems happens also because it depends by the version and images you find...i find at least five different cockpit (our is one of them)version and at least three different exteriors...bytheway i m taking care about all comments.

set very high and texture maximum load is 2048

it give best results to 1024, the switches could be emproved, about the turn coordinator...do not know actually find what's wrong..here it do not looks blurry and zooming it looks better...i will check into.
