All of those cars are considered exotic collectors items.

I happened to meet Jerry Wiegert several times. He owned Vector, and that was not truly a 'flop'. Thats a rough word for a good endeavor. He made many cars before being subdued by his investors.

The only one that had rough times was the Maseratic Chrysler TC which had very rough engine problems, (2.2 engine made by Maserati, and trim issues coming apart.

Those Subaru's with the small windows were awesome! Like a Citreon CX or DX (cant remember). A very exotic car and now a prized collectors item.

I happen to like the SSR

Yes, but did you like it enough to buy one? That's why they're gone.

:gameoff:

There's a lot of vehicles I like but I can't afford....

Truth be told, if I could've afforded one, (and if it was practical) I would've bought it....(Not currently practical with 2 kids under 10...)

That being said, have you bought everything that you like?

Oh, c'mon now. I'm sure you do alright for yourself financially. I can only guess your paygrade because you said you're in your mid 20's for years in the AF, right? How many kids do you have in total? Those cars weren't that expensive.

My point was more aimed at suggesting that not enough people were huge on the car. I'm sure there are tons of cars that both of us merely like, but most people only have one or two at a time. That one or two is made up of cars that were need for practical purposes, or were at the top of the lust list. The SSR wasn't practical or lusty enough for enough people, so it's gone.

It's not really a fair comparison to ask me if I've bought what I like. My situation is very different from many people my age. I've been lucky enough to have been decently successful in venture capitalism, real estate and small business (municipality contracting) growth. To that end, I've bought the sporty vehicles that've caught my eye because I'm a car nut. Right now, I own an SVT lightning, an SVT cobra, and a Ferrari 308 norwood edition. I've posted pics here of them before. I try to restrain myself and not make really rediculous purchases on cars, but I hope this answers your question. I REALLY want my own fighter jet, and I have no idea when that could ever happen.

Oh c'mon now....

No assumptions on my situation please - thank you....

(Am I paying off student loans for wife? Am I helping parents out, sibling?)

etcetera....

(Rant Off) :)

I was seriously tempted by the SVX, it looked 'different' but it drove better than expected and there's nothing shabby about an air cooled flat six.
At the time $A85,000 was a bit too close to the 911 bracket, but a year later the numbers were much better.
Today, if it was a 2009 release, I'd be onto one like a seagull on a piece of hot fat!
Subaru build quality and engineering is right up there with Honda etc.

what's the SVX? I didn't think there were many more air-cooled cars.

'The SVX (http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/default.aspx?make=Subaru&model=SVX) was most definitely a case of the latter. Subaru’s most distinctive car—and considering the company gave birth to the 356cc 360 and the three-cylinder Justy, that’s saying a lot—came from the pen of legendary Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.
The SVX was intended to be the car on which the “new” Subaru would be built, a revolutionary achievement that banished all thoughts of the marque’s often quirky past. A 230-hp, 3.3-liter, 24-valve flat-six lived under the hood, and a highly evolved, electronically managed all-wheel-drive system put power to the ground. Four-wheel steering was available in Japan, and Giugiaro’s sweeping lines resulted in a drag coefficient of just 0.29. Unfortunately, tech wizardry wasn’t enough to overcome awkward styling and a high (almost $25,000 in 1992) price, and sales never took off. The SVX was a good car dragged down into floptastic floppiness by the hubris of its maker.'

Losers because they aim at a niche market and not a real people market. My B-I-L has a Crossfire, I'd rather drive my Honda Fit!

The SSR is/was nice. But let's face it the car was made for a niche market. It's basically a Corvette in a sporty truck body. There's just not a huge market for that type of vehicle. Corvette and sports car guys really didn't want it. Truck guys said it was nice but what could you do with it besides go fast (and look good doing it). You certainly can't use it for any type of work. At least if you got a Dodge Ram SRT-10 you could go fast AND haul stuff.

And the price on the SSR was in the Vette category. It's no real surprise in the economy today why it was axed. Cars like the Vette and even the new camaro will always have buyers. Vehicles like the SSR are more for when the econmy is good and people could afford to be more leisurely with their money.

As an aside I saw a Viper at the local Dodge dealer last week. That's a pretty gutsy move to put one on the showroom floor these days......

When we lived up north, there was a lady that won a SSR at the Mohawk Casino. Price on it was 45,000+. Afterwards she said she was takining it home and planned on selling it asap to buy something practial. Yeah is was nice to look at, but not something worth that kind of money. And she did sell it too. Tho no idea what she got for it.

$45K for an SSR was a good deal. I've seen them at dealers with sticker prices of $69-$75K. For $45K that had to be stripped down version with something other than the Vette motor.....

:applause::icon_lol: now that was funny!

***seriously though, all of those cars failed because for anyone who had the $$ to buy one, there were better options available. plain and simple. not that they weren't cool in some way. 'cept for those dorky suvs.
funny that they mentioned the prowler but didn't give it it's own spot. it certainly deserved a spot on that list. i loved the way they looked. but there's no way in this world i ever woulda bought one for the price they were selling them for. hot rod's are s'posed to be HOT...not lukewarm

Man.. That is one well written historical bit of information on that car Wombat!

You should consider writing for car magazines.

What's funny is if some billionaire comes in at the last minute and gets the gov't into a bidding war for GM. Some people in Washington would have major egg on the face.

Cheese and Rice (new term for me not using JC's name in vain)! I was just about to come back and make that point Willy. It will be a cold day in hell that Joe NASCAR buys a Chivy.:monkies:
