View Full Version : two ruined airshows in two weeks: Dyess AFB and NAS Fort Worth

Man, I have no luck. I went to the Dyess/Abilene show a few weeks ago, and the only thing in the air was one flyby of a B-1 that got in under a 400' cloud base for one slow pass.

Yesterday, we went to the NAS Forth Worth/JRB show and it had serious potential. However, surprise rain all but killed that. Among those scheduled were the Viper west team, the Superhornet team, and even the lockheed F-16 show, which is the only show in North America using tipwinders. Supposedly the lockheed show is really something to see. It's too bad. A couple jets went up, but they all performed flat shows. I still enjoyed seeing the jets fly, but you can only see the jets do so many hard turns in front of the crowd before you wish for more.

The Fort Worth trip cost me a fortune. Of course, my girlfriend had to stay at a four-star hotel as well as eat at an ultra exclusive and trendy brazilian steakhouse.

Oh well, I enjoyed myself, but I really had hoped for more. I'd post pics, but the stinkin' JPEG thing is still broke.

Essentially...Photobucket is more bare-bones though. I tried shutterfly too, but I prefer Photobucket because the emphasis is more on ease-of-access and sharing.

Thanks for sharing Tigs!!

Last airshow I was at was in Georgia ... just north of Atlanta at Dobbins AFB ...

It started out great but as is typical in the south, it clouded up and a severe thunderstorm ensued, the event MC had an announcement made that the tarmac was to be cleared due to the threat, and we were all directed to a rather large hanger for shelter.

Needless to say after a good hour of steady rain, I decided it enough and got a good drenching get back to my truck to go home.

And there was me thinking it only ever rained in Britain.......

It is really frustrating when shows are ruined like this - keeping my fingers crossed for Flying Legends !

The Andrews AFB show in D.C. had about a 9' ceiling. Really crappy weather. Sounds like Mother Nature refused to cooperate. Bitch!

it happens alot. or at least too much for likes of any one of us here, yes?
still, a day spent there, even in the rain is better than sitting in front of the television.

i am hoping the weather cooperates for this next week here in toronto:
http://torontowingsandwheels.com/home.html
there is some intersting aircraft scheduled to be there.
last time i was there, was where i got my first taste of fs9

That's a shame but you can't change the weather.

They've got a say here in DE... "What comes after a rain soaked weekend?"

Monday!

Guys, if some of you remember I went as part of the B-1B Lancer demo team to RIAT and Farnborough last year; RIAT 2008 was rained out. That was one of the biggest letdowns of my life. I had everything paid for and had an all access pass for being there as a performer. That's a one time oppurtunity that will never happen again.

Come to airventure ;)

I'm sure at least one of the days out of the week will be good weather. :engel016:

Though OSH is known for at least one pretty big storm during that week every year.

You and me both !

I was at the first airshow of the season at Duxford on Sunday, where there were strong winds all day, curtailing much of the flying. From what I recall of the commentary the BBMF never left their base, and many of the earlier prop planes (20s to 40s era) were grounded. At least the rain held off for the most part.

For many planes that were able to display the pilots showed what they were made of when it came to landing, as all did a fantastic job with a very stiff cross-wind at pretty much right-angles to the hardened runway.
