Gidday mate. read the thread on the resources used btw great optimisation there.

If you dont mind me asking i have a few questions.

1. How do you and the mods and the server gods, stand on image hotlinking from other servers? I seem to remember that the previous iteration of the forum we werent supposed to hotlink for bandwidth issues.

2. How many beers have you drunk since the reload?! :costumes:

I'll try to answer your questions.

Ickie hasn't had any beers he's on enough meds as it is. LOL!

Now to the other question, hot linking will be blocked for almost all file types including images. The new server security software allows for us to add htaccess on all incoming requests. Once we get everything setup on this server there will be no remote linking to anything but php, htm & html files. Even the FTPs will be locked down and will refuse remote (hot) linking requests.

There are several reasons we are not allowing hot linking but by far the biggest is bandwidth. We have a great deal of trouble every year paying for bandwidth, donationware hasn't generated enough and voluntary donations are rare so we just can't pay more than what is on our contract after the fact. The internet being so big and with so many people with web space hot linking can consume more bandwidth each month than the site uses. Also hot linking can be used as a portal to a server for DDOS attacks.

Wait - hotlinking from another site takes up bandwidth here?

I upload to photobucket and post the link here - that takes up bandwidth?? But the image isn't even hosted here! How does that work??

I think he means linking images here to other sites??

That's what I was thinking too. That's mostly why I did Photobucket and my old site (which I really need to renew...), so I wouldn't suck up bandwidth here. Man... This sucks. :( :pop4:

Why does it say at the bottom of the page (IMG) Code is on? (where ( -> [ ) -> ])

Does this not imply one may post remote images?

Any Images that originate at our site or reside on the SOH server will only be accessable from SOH sites. I.E., if you put a link to an image that was uploaded to a forums post on another website it will not work. Now, if you include an image in a post that isn't on the SOH server it will be accessable remotely.

cheers fellas for the answers .... worried about the lack of beer swilling but i am assuming that will be recitified later!

ok so what I propose for the fellas that need to have a large image is this.

use the inline ( dunno if this is the right word ) but the attach image feature. But for you fellas that need the large screenshots ( and lets face it who doesnt want to see some of panthers screens the size of a wall! ) then a clickable link. I know photobucket and imageshack allow you to make just a text link at the bottom.

best of both worlds for the dialup users are happy and us screenshot junkies are as well. I'll be passing it onto baz as he has some massive screens.

Some people are having problems not seeing the icon and avatars, it seems to be in your firewall, since, for the moment we are using an IP address, check your settings, maybe popups?
Others tell me it fixed it.
add this if it will let you
http://72.36.178.76

For ZoneAlarm you have to uncheck the box for "Remove private header information" under 3rd party cookies in the options for IP 72.36.178.76 in the privacy site list. Also uncheck "Banner / Skyscraper ads" and "Animations" on the ad blocking tab so you can view thumbnails and animations respectively.

in Norton Internet security professionl edition.
go to "options/internet security professional/web content tab/check permit in the 'information about visited sites' block"

Look for similar settings in other firewalls.
I do not know why, since I see everything.

also in the user CP, optains, the Message Editor Interface, set to standard, i have had problems with the enhanced one.
