View Full Version : Photobucket an Alternate to SOH pics?

Since we all don't at present have the capability of adding pics via soh attachments, is photobucket an viable alternative? Seems photobucket has been used successfully by some here.

I'm not a current user of photobucket and would consider using it. Perhaps those that are photobucket users and post photos here using it could provide us with their experiences and some pros and cons of its use.

Photobucket works very well.

Very easy to post a link in the SOH forum.

I use photobucket with no problems. It does a very good job. I'd even consider paying for its subscription to upload larger and more artwork and photos.

I have been using this place for a couple of years now for all my screenshots/forum pictures....

http://www.dropshots.com/

It's free to use and you can organize your photos into albums if you want to.

There is a bit of a trick to getting the URL of the photo for use in forums but once you know how to do it then it is fast and easy.

Thanks for the promising info. I've been to the site and reviewed much of the faq's. One Gig of space for free seems adequate. Did not see info for removal of pics, but supposedly it is possible.

If learning the URL trick is too tricky, I may be back with a plea for help.

No trick to it at all. When you put the pointer over the image in your gallery under each photo you will see the code to insert it to websites. This site will use the IMG tag. A tag coding for a specific function. They are enclosed in "[" "]" Brackets and look a little like this [code}URL to your picture [/code}. The last tag always has the / in it to close the tag.

Now all you need to do is copy the code that has IMG in brackets to your post in the Outhouse and its done. Right click the code and copy.

bracket with } so you will see the code and not the picture in the code.

That would look like this.

Of all I've used PhotoBucket is the easiest..... even a first timer like Jim got it to work as it should. Congrats Jim... nice photo. :applause:

But seeing how they change the way things work form time to time, it can be a challenge. At least their site is stable.

Just remember this Jim, if you delete a photo from PhotoBucket [same goes with the other photo hosting sites] the link will no longer work where you posted it. That's one reason adding an attachment directly from your computer works better. If you delete the photo from your computer it still shows on the site you uploaded it to.

Gary, since I don't leave my pc on all the time linking to my pc is not an option.

Should my 1 Gb of free photobucket space fill up, I'll delete the oldest pics, which probably will not get much continued viewing from SOH users anyway.

Unfortunately for Ickie and SOH, problems occur with the server where there is a loss of services and sometimes data. Also we tend to fill up space on SOH and are periodically asked to delete stuff, or it is done for us.

Hopefully by using photobucket for pics, the load on SOH will be less, allowing others to use attachments longer before space on SOH is filled up.

I fully respect our administrators and ickie's hard work. Just want to ease the load if I can.

It does not matter if your computer is on or off for hosting pics....Your IP is always active...

A Gig of space for pics is a lot.....And you can purchase more space on Photobucket for relatively cheap if you ever had the need too !

Jim, if it's uploaded from your computer, your computer does not have to be on at all. It's the same as if you put the photo on a CD and deleted the photo from your computer... it's still on the CD, as it's still on the site where you uploaded it to. Same as if it were a skin or you avatar pic uploaded to SOH, it's always there unless the site deletes it from the server or it's lost due to a server failure.
