View Full Version : Fiddlin around in plane maker

I'm no artiest nor modeler, I just fiddle around.
So far my thoughts on the plane maker proggie, pretty powerful for a "included" program.
Needs more functionality with the view panes/windows where you move the vertices around (needs to be able to select each little window and make full screen.
Needs to include all object types in the modeler with perhaps a better nameing convention? Seems a bit too hard to grasp easily.

IMO if this program was ramped up a bit/made a bit easier to understand by lay folks and had everything needed to create the AC and the 3d pit (maybe does but so far I'm not sure) then it would be a very powerful proggie and IMO would draw lots of folks into xplane just to play with createing stuff.

As I have time to actualy fool around with it more I may learn that it's got more functionality that 1st appears though. But that's a rough 1st impression.

Now I have been fiddling about a little, I d/led the tutorial I mentioned in the repainter thread, I've not modeled a cub yet as I've not had the time to take to do so. I did D/L the cub model and have been fiddling about with it.

So far: The orginal cub, no vc, painted windows.

With working 3D vockpit views (no actual VC pit yet just the inside of the model) I smoked the windows too much too...

So, the plane maker has alot of potential I think but needs better tutorials perhaps and some beter features in some areas.

Still a very cool "extra" toy :)

Hey Zeke,

Man! Very nice! I might be coming to you for help on how to use it.

Hummm, getting more interesting :)

And I know there is a way to "double wall" a part by inverting it where it will texture inside and out (found that a few days ago when I had a few spare minutes).

That is the 2d panel in 3D VC, with clickable gauges.
The cub is not a very good model, the eye views are off quite a bit. In just a quick and dirty resizeing to get a rough positioning in 3d it threw the 2d positioning way off. And that panel is too far forward by a good 2' but I think there's maybe a adjustment setting. The nameing on the positioning just don't jib with my hillbilly.

The gauges are easily positioned and resized, works very much like the old freeware 2d gauge proggie we used to use in cfs2....forget the name now.

Lol' this may well be the best toy in xplane :D

Zeke & Lionheart! (and all others)

We will be patient waiting for that... I cannot join hands with you guys to discover things on how to make mdels and VC's on XP9, but I can cheer and pray for your success!

Let's make this thread burning with ideas and potentials!!!!

Go for it Zeke, Lionheart! (and all others!)

Well I'm no modeler. I can't seem to get blender to export correctly and I ain't yet decieded to pop for the $s to register ac3d. I think I'm gonna hunt a different model without a VC to d/l and fiddle with as the cub model used "extra" wheel struts (with wheels) for various bits which I'm pretty sure throws off the center of the model. I can not move that panel back any.

If I, or someone else can sort that out it'll give a "cheap" means for doin a fast and dirty VC. Won't be a nice one with seats and all but still better than 2D pit.

Once Bill and the other gurus get goin in this I forsee a huge surge in realy nice addons.
As for myself, I just get bored and go fiddlin with stuff ;) About the only talent I seem to have is doin the singing for the WillyTee cartoon movies.

If you are wonderin what a WillyTee cartoon is.......I mostly play BattleGround Europe (World War 2 Online). WillyTee is a fellow player and the "unofficial" cartoonest for BE/WW2OL. http://www.willyteecomics.com/

X-Plane9, ignore the grafics cause I got them dumbed down for quick loadup. X-Plane comes with it's own "native" planemaker proggie and a trial version of AC3D. Blender, which is free will also export to xplane .obj (with a free exporter d/l).

I'd like to find a way to export from gmax to some filetype that blender would use (with the gmax textures would gbe good too). But so far I ain't found anything that's "Zeke" simple.

Ohhh and google sketchup will expot x-plane .obj as well.

I need to learn to actualy use blender and sketchup I guess, I have/had a small bit of understanding of gmax.

Blender, sketchup are free and do work pretty good but are a bit less easy than gmax (to me at least).

Best as I can tell you can't realy model a vc in plane maker as you can only create full box model and can't cut or delete individual vertexs or faces. And, again best as I can understand, a model you creatye outside of plane maker must be imported as a .obj and then attached to a model you actualy made in plane maker as x plane uses the geometry of the model created in plane maker for the actual flight model. You simply make a "rough" model then hide it and assign the imported model to it.

Lol most all of this thread is me wondering out loud :)
I'm not a modeler but I do like to tinker with stuff :D
