View Full Version : An old problem...

I know I have posted about this issue before, and I admit, it still befuddles me. Now I'm armed though with more information which may help solve it.

The Problem:
I have several airfields which are on top of Mesas, either that or my plane is suspended in the air with a shadow underneath it. An example is Cherbourg. I've have this problem with both the Pen's TAF, and Ajak's version. The issue also shows up with Mask Rider's sea port DEI_ lake Tondano (as a mesa), and Xavier's CHi Kai Tak airfield (the airfield in then in a box canyon with no way in your out unless your flying a helio).

The problem flips between the two sinerios depending on how I have my scenery cfg setup. Currently I'm getting suspended airplanes with this scenery config:

The problem switches to mesa mode when I put the airfields above SDC's Euro stuff, and Rhumba's Mesh.

Currently at FR_Cherbourg my aircraft are situated over the runway at 398ft MSL. This invisible platform exists for the full length of the runway and end abruptly at both ends and a tthe edges of the runway. When I slew the aircraft to the ends or to the side of FR_Cherborg, then the aircraft is resting at an altitude of 9ft MSL.

Attached it a pic of TR's A-20 suspended over FR_Cherborg.

You had a gap after area 23, it jumped directly to 25. Try it in this configuration and see if there is any difference. It could be the other stuff wasn't in the proper hierarchy.

Thanks for the ideas guys, and I tried them both., I even deleted all of the file.dat files to see if that would have any effect. But no dice.

I'm still suspended 384ft in the air at Cherbourg while 'on' the runway. If I slew the aircraft to either side of the runway, but still on Cherbourg airfield, I can slew it down to the ground, and this time I'd getting a reading of 4.5FT MSL.

I selected Azeville2 as it was in the same area as Cherbourg. At Azeville2 my aircraft is not suspended in the air, and the altimeter reads 8ft MSL.

Hi Wolf
I think that could be fixed in the airbase.dat with the altitude values of these airfields ,have you tried this way ?

Hi Wulf,

try a flatten switch for the whole airfield. Open MB, go to Cherbourg, put your pointer in the middle of the runway, it will give you the altitude the scenery was designed at. You can read it at the bottom left corner of the whole MB screen.

Write it down, then zoom out a little and put your pointer on the top left corner of your MB scenery screen. Write down the coords you can read in the bottom left corner of the whole MB screen, then proceed clockwise to the top right corner, bottom right corner, bottom left corner.

Each time write down the coordinates. If you did your homework correctly, you should now have a total of 8 coordinates.

Open your scenery.cfg, go to where your Cherbourg entry is and write at the bottom the following:

flatten.0=[write here the altitude figure], [write here your no.1 coord], [no.2], [no.3 and so on]; proceed clockwise with each single coordinate separate by a comma and do not put a comma after the last one.

Many times I was able to cure the problem by forcing the mesh underneath to level out at the altitude meant by the airfield designer, when its own scenery flatten for some reason did not work.

Like you, I had aircrafts buried in the ground or sitting in the air.

You can enter up to 10 flatten switches (0 through 9) per each scenery group. Each one would be numbered as:

flatten.0=
flatten.1=
flatten.2=
etc.

As Rhumbaflappy rightly pointed out in another thread, this is a rather crude method, but it works until someone steppes in, better would be the original scenery desiger himself, and corrects the entire scenery with an appropriate Area16 (flatten) *.bgl.

I hope this helps.

Cheers!

You can also go to Martin Wright's site and get MkAFD2. After putting scasm.exe into its folder, fire it up and put in the CORRECT coordinates and altitude. Check the appropriate boxes in the AFD tab ONLY and it can zip out a poly bgl a lot faster than anything else around. Drop the poly bgl into the same scenery folder as the base site. There's also an option box in there to set the radius size of the flatten poly, which means one poly instead of several flatten switches for one location.

Wulf190,

from your picture I take it that it is the Cherbourg created by me. I have double checked all files. The elevation is 380 ft and in my installs it works alright.
So I can' t help with a corrected area16.

Cheers

OK so if the airfield is really supposed to be at 380ft MSL, then the surrounding terrain is far too flat. How would I fix this then as it now sounds like a problem with the mesh. :kilroy:

Edit:

OK, I just went in and played around with turning off Sander's Euro scenery and Rhumba's LOD 7 and 8 Mesh. With Europe. all of the airfields seems to be having an issue if Sander's Eurw is ON. Thats is what casus the terrian height to drop and the aircraft to be suspended in mid air.

With the problem airfields out wide of Europe, the problem is then Rhumba's Mesh. At Xavier's DEI-Lake Todano with the mesh ON a Huge mesa is created around the operating area of the sea port. ( I knew he was good, but not this good! His mesh has the power to lift the sea abover the land!) And the mesh also boxes in Xaveri's Chi _ Kai Tak making the field unusable.

So with Europe it seems that Eurw dropes the terrian height, and every where else the Mesh raises the airfield or the surrounding terrian.

Why can't there be a happy place?!

Rami

With the same setup of Rhumbaflappy's LOD 5 mesh and watermasks replacing the stock scenery, and then the LOD 7 and 8 mesh on top of the stock scenery, I get the aircraft right on top of the runway at Cherbourg.

Wulf190,

A couple of thoughts...are you using Rhumbaflappy's LOD 5 mesh and watermasks, and the dem4.bgl replacement with your scenery setup instead of the stock files? That dem4.bgl file replaces the stock one in the root\SCENERY folder, allowing Rhumba's new mesh to "fit" the scenery better. Without it, it might cause some funny circumstances...

achim27619

Wulf190,

I made all the French airfields on Josia Haut' s mesh as stated in the readme and there the elevation of the terrain in the South and the East is just above 400 feet. And somehow I had to make a compromise.

But I have Cherbourg as well installed in an install working with rhumba' s mesh and it works properly.

Cheers

Achim

I got the 'new' dem4.bgl replacement in the file. (I didn't know I was missing that). But Its still no dice. :banghead:

perhaps there is an issue in my Eurw file that I'm having? Sander's website is down so I don't know if I have the most current file that covers that area...
The reason I'm looking more at that is that I have this same issue with the SRTM mesh from Simviation too. If I deactivate the eurw file in CFS2 it fixes that issue.

Only thing I'm not using is Rhumba's water mask.

edit:
How do you guys have Sander's European improvements installed? Ever time I deactivate the euro section in CFS2 I don't have the problem, but every time its activated I get the problem. What is supposed to go in to these files?

Wulf190
April 17th, 2009, 12:12
I got it!

Turns out that the flatten A16N.bgls in the eurw folder were conflicting with those in my airfield install. I removed the A16N.bgls from the eurw folder and now everything is how it should be so far.

I'll continue looking around my CFS2 Europe because I know those flattens in the eurw folder were there for a reason, but perhaps they are not needed with Rhumba's Mesh?
