Earth 2160 Hands-on
As the sun swallows the Earth, three factions battle over the rest of space.

June 6, 2005 - When the Earth started spinning off of its axis and straight towards the sun, people sort of went a little nuts. Wars broke out in the race to get off the human home planet and colonize other planets as quickly as possible. The ensuing wars between the superpowers of the time, The Lunar Corporation, Eurasian Dynasty, and United Civilized States, helped to usher in a new era of waste and destruction. The fighting continues in 2160, but the technology has changed. Not only has the tech improved for the fictional factions in the game, but also in the real world. Consequently, Reality Pump and Zuxxez have managed to pack a nice graphical punch into what will undoubtedly be one of the largest RTSs in recent memory.
If this year's E3 showed us anything, it's that real-time strategy is making a push forward to claim a right to be represented in the awards for best graphics for the year. Games like Age of Empires III and Company of Heroes both wowed the crowds, but Earth 2160 (http://pc.ign.com/objects/017/017273.html) is right up there with them in terms and power. Units and vehicles are very detailed, explosions and other effects are very well done, and environments are believably alien. The game uses all of the new DX9 tricks to round out an impressive array of visuals. The game hasn't finished being optimized, but all signs are pointing to smooth sailing on that side of things as well.
This marks the first time that we've had the chance to sit down with the game and test out the capabilities of the new engine along with some of the new features that make Earth 2160 so interesting. While the build we had the chance to check out isn't done, it's already looking pretty polished. Included in the build are campaigns for the Eurasian Dynasty and Lunar Corporation. There hasn't been enough time to really get into the thick of the battle quite yet, but we did get a good view of how different these two sides really are from each other.
One of the biggest of these differences is the way the bases are constructed. The technology from each of the factions comes from decidedly different trains of thought. The LC is very high tech with expensive and devastatingly efficient technology. The Eurasian Dynasty seems to have a more traditional approach with brutal weaponry reminiscent of the 21st century. Ballistic tanks, rocket launching infantry, and old converted BMW motorcycles make out the basics of their troops.
