Hi, everybody!

Everytime I can, I take a free flight to enjoy the new outstanding world/CFS2 mesh files posted by Rhumba and I love what I see!

Check the attached screenshot:

stock strip I took off from: Babelthuap
readable coords: N7 16.15' E134 24.08; Altitude 3,198.15'; Heading 55.55; Speed 154.45 knots
landclass and water textures: Stiz's converted FS9 Pacific texture set v.2

Installed mesh:

Rhumba's LOD5 world mesh;
Rhumba's LOD7 world mesh;
Rhumba's LOD8 watermasks;
Rhumba's LOD8 CFS2 mesh;
stock LOD9 mesh (all minus two PNG)

Installed stock shorelines, streams and roads (i.e.: pac*.bgl).

Clouds: 8-bit textures for FS2002 from old website: www.fswsimflight.com (http://www.fswsimflight.com)

My framerate: variable, I've seen in this scenery peaks of 85 fps. When I took the shot: 55.6 fps on a 5-year-old AMD Sempron 2800+ 1.99Ghz, 1Gb RAM, ATI Radeon 9250 with 128Mb of video RAM. More than acceptable, by all means.

My CFS2 settings:

all display settings maxed out with the exclusion of Detailed VC;
Top visibility level= 20mi
Target LOD speed= 40 fps
Scenery Density= MAX

My PTO scenery.cfg settings:

My scenery library is installed externally to CFS2 root folder. The path is the following: C:\Simulators\CFS2_Scenery\PACIFIC THEATRE\, while CFS2 is installed in C:\Simulators\Combat Flight Simulator 2.

The above scenery.cfg layout is courtesy of Bearcat241 "Il Magnifico". He sent me a scenery.cfg template for keeping multi-theatre CFS2 installs under control, while switching from a theater to the next one.

......The attached screenshots were taken flying from Lakunai strip, Rabaul, to Namatanai strip, New Ireland. A test flight to check my new blurred prop textures for Tango Romeo's A6M3 Type 32 Zero.

Look at the zoom-in detail of this beautiful river in screen #2!

I've never seen in CFS2 a river shaped like this - i.e. like a real river! -, running in its valley, instead of up a cliff somewhere, and meeting the ocean with the shoreline breaking up and letting the river through in the proper spot, before installing Rhumba's new LOD8 watermasks! All sceneries from Rabaul up to here I saw, show the same great looking rivers, some of them even joining together before meeting the ocean.:amen:

Shot #3: arrival at Namatanai, another river runs to the right of the strip, the shoreline follows the cove nicely and the stock seaplane pier on the left sits correctly by the shore.
I wouldn't say the attached screenies show a louzy-looking PTO scenery!! :jump:

THANKS AGAIN, RHUMBA!
:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

ONE LAST THING:

I just discovered that Pen32Win's Rabaul scenery flatten switches, Rabaul town, Rapopo, Lakunai & Vunakanau, help immensely in keeping the Rabaul harbour shorelines and landclass in their proper place, as shown in the last screenie. My strong suggestion is to keep them active.

Cheers!

Hi Kelticheart,

I don't know how you have done it, but if I try to combine the new watermasks with the default coastlines I end up with beaches that don't follow the new accurate coastline.

Cheers,
Kevin

G'day, Kevin!

Try organising your scenery.cfg following mine above. Don't use CFS2 scenery library, but edit manually your file with Notepad or any plain text editor.

Make a backup copy of your current scenery.cfg, for example rename your copy "scenery_backup.cfg", and then start editing it.

Pay attention to each Layer= statement in each scenery block, if it matches the number of each scenery block like this:

[Area.001]
.........
...........
..........
Layer=1
..........
...........

[Area.002]
.........
...........
..........
Layer=2
..........
...........

[Area.003]
.........
...........
..........
Layer=3
..........
...........

and so on, it's easier keeping track of exactly where a scenery will be in CFS2 hierarchy and when it will be loaded by the sim. For some reason, since I started organising my scenery.cfg in this way, CFS2 addon sceneries show up correctly with no surprises.

Just remember scenery.cfg shows sceneries reversed compared to CFS2 scenery library screen, so that the Default Terrain, [Area.001], first in scenery.cfg has the lowest priority (highest number) in CFS2 scenery library screen.

Now, make sure Rhumba's new files are placed as above, like this:

[Area.001]
Title=Terrain
Local=Scenedb\world
Active=TRUE
Texture_ID=1
Layer=1
Required=TRUE
Remote=

[Area.002]
Title=RL LOD8 Watermasks
Local=..\your addon scenery path
Remote=
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Layer=2

[Area.003]
Title=RL LOD7 Global Mesh
Local=..\your addon scenery path
Remote=
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Layer=3

[Area.004]
Title=RL LOD8 CFS2 Mesh
Local=..\your addon scenery path
Remote=
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE
Layer=4

Rhumba's files (RL=Richard Ludowise) must be loaded by the sim as shown above, that is, in CFS2 scenery library screen:

4) LOD8 CFS2 Mesh
3) LOD7 World Mesh
2) LOD8 Watermasks
1) Default Terrain

the local=..\ statement shows the path where your scenery folder is located on your hard drive, it should be the same folder containing CFS2. Mine is C:\Simulators\. If you haven't already, I suggest you to create an external scenery folder and take all of your sceneries out of CFS2\Scenedb.

Many SOH threads in the past pointed out that CFS2 loads sceneries more efficiently if they are located externally, tons of comments pointed out this is one of the easiest CFS2 tuneups.

This is how I installed Rhumba's mesh and watermasks in my CFS2. In all honesty, I still do not understand why in my pc everything looks so fine while the rest of the world is having so many shoreline conflicts between the stock stuff and Rhumba's files.

Sure, my Pacific shorelines are not perfect. Sometimes the mesh goes beyond the shore so you get water going over the mesh; sometimes the shoreline goes over the mesh. But, to me, it's all limited to an acceptable level of visual defects. Of course, until better sceneries correctly placed in CFS2 will be developed, as Rhumba himself stated several times.

I hope this helps you.

Cheers!

Hi KH,

Thanks for all the information. Your scenery.cfg file is virtually identical to mine - the order is the same, only the names are slightly different. I was probably looking at other parts of the world where the inaccuracy of the default shorelines are more pronounced. I use one common external scenery folder and edit the scenery.cfg file manually. I will take your tip and use the Rabaul flattens.

Richard Ludowise has indeed transformed CFS 2. The Alps and Himalayas are marvellous. When you fly out of Interlaken now, the Eiger and the Jungfrau look like the real things.

Keep up your good work!

Cheers,
Kevin
