Thanks Gera. I've just finished reading a book about Noel Wien - it's great to see a video to give it some context.

Love the Widgeon footage too!

I usually get to see Richard Wien at the monthly QBA meeting. At his hangar here in Fairbanks there is a great collection of historic photos from those days, with many photos of Noel and Sig.

A bunch of pretty interesting guys still hanging on, including the only guy to have ever flown a P-51 on skis!

Went out and flew the 54 PA-18 today on skis, some rememberances of the "olten days".

Cheers: T.

If you like Bush Piloting, you should check out cubdriver749er.com. He has a boatload of videos on YouTube and for the tidy sum of $7,000.00, you and your Cub can go to Alaska and learn from the master himself. Flying with him in his PA18 and through radio, he'll show you how to master your craft better than you thought possible.

The second vid is his shortest STOL ever, bar none!

Hi

Yes I am very much - it's a fascinating insight into their lives. I'm looking for some scenery so I can do some of their flights. Is the Aerosoft 'African Airstrip Adventures' and 'GEX Africa/Middle East' worth getting?

I have GEX AFME. It does make the ground textures much nicer but unfortunately there is no such product as UTX for Africa to improve the rivers, lakes and shorelines so as to make them more realistic. A good lanclass would also be good to have. I think there is at least one for Africa (Scenery Tech or XClass).

The sand dunes look great with GEX AFME though. Here are a few shots I took flying over Morocco after installing GEX AFME. Landclass is default:

69055 69056 69057

Unfortunately I have not flown over Botswana.

Dave is a UK 'Freeview' channel. This is their website

with Bush Pilot clips, but I'm not sure if you can watch it online.

I'm flying in Africa at the moment myself... sadly, with GEX, and the scenrytech landclass, it still looks like part tan Europe, and part desert wasteland... its rather soulless...

For African flying the aforementioned GEX and land class is a good start, but there are a few other things that can be installed to make it a little better, first there is the old freeware southern Africa sceneries by aeroworx (I think that's their name) That would include Botswana. Also there's some Utx-ish pay ware available from Open VFR that covers many countrys in Africa. I have a few of their scenerys, they use the openstreetmap data to provide better roads, landclass and coastlines. Their scenery is better in areas where the data itself is better, like Europe, but the African stuff they have is still much better than default.
