These 2 photo's appeared on Ebay recently, can anyone see whats wrong with them?

The first was labeled "USS Monterey_foundering in a typhoon".
The second was labeled "Victorious after Kamikaze attack".

http://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chrono-04CV-Victorious.htm

Should also mention HMS Victorious while on loan to the USN shows no logs that I can find in the war collage records ever getting nailed in a Kamikaze attack.

Naval Historical Center has the photo listed as USS Langley..

http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-l/cvl27.htm

US Dept of Defense has it as the Monterey

http://www.defenselink.mil/news/NewsArticle.aspx?ID=2574

obviously they are the same photo but the one on the DoD site is reversed.

Correct!:woot:

Also she didn't founder, but did suffer damage from a fire started when an aircraft broke loose in the hangar and crashed into several others.

With the mis-labelling of this photo it should now help you with the second.

hmm i don't know...the Imperial War Museum seems to think its Victorious..

redriver6

ok i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that is not Victorious but is possibly Formidable...maybe

both ships were hit by Kamikaze attacks (an absolutely great time to have a steel deck instead of wood) but i think Formidable was hit in the island/deck area where the picture shows it burning.

a couple of different sites say that a steam pipe was ruptured on both ships?...and we can obviously see steam coming out of something.

both ships had the fires out and were launching and recovering aircraft within and hour or two after being hit.

if those had been Essex class carriers they probably would have been knocked out of action...or worse.

3 things to remember:

1) Insanity is NOT a "state of mind" .... it's a "way of life" :isadizzy:

2) It's always better to have a "bottle in front of me" than a "frontal lobotomy" 81254

3) Everything is ALWAYS Collin's fault.

The answer to 2 is...

HMS Formidable, 4th May 1945.

I think its due to the amount of aircraft parked on the stern, when Victorious was hit she had her deckpark midships and bow.

The later carriers in this class had a higher freeboard to account for the extra height in the hangar space.
