FSX just took a header

This last install lasted longer than all the others but it finally faceplanted.

I guess I picked up a rootkit macro infection somewhere (according to AVG anyways) and it got into my FSX 'UIRE' folder as well as my HiFi XGraphics program, causing something called a 'cyclic redundancy check' error er whatnot...so naturally I went looking for the culprit and did myself more harm than good with the result being that FSX is down and I do not care to go through the whole rediculous proceedure all over again anytime soon.

thats ok though because LOMAC and IL2 '46 still work and have never been the pain inthe A$$ to me that FSX has been.

I hope that if there is another FS produced by M/S in the future it will not be a balky, finicky, fustercluck like FSX - the Windows ME of flight sims:woot:

I stopped running any reg cleaners and unless I am dam 100% sure,NEVER let one of those progs delete anything.
I ran crapcleaner, still do but with restraint, and let it "fix" the registry. Basically it was a bunch of stuff I knew nothing about but hey, the programmers are smarter than me right. So with one mouse click hosed my system. The reg backup failed.
With FSX its best to leave good enough alone. All these snake oil fsx.cfg changes and bios changes usually do more harm than good. With as many addons as I have now, if I had to reinstall it all I would probably have a nervous breakdown.Best case would be to have a dedicated uber computer JUST for FSX and nothing else.
To make you feel better. I had FS9 with over a grand in addons and FSX with over 500. When I loaded Acceleration, my brand new raptor hard drive flew apart and I lost everything. Thats when I said my final goodbye to FS9 and went dedicated to FSX.

Man...I run CCleaner daily and RegScrub weekly and never had a problem.......

Maybe my luck is getting better after the 7 month struggel I had with computers and FSX...:woot:

Bill... I install my OS..Update it ..Install all my apps..Install FSX and all my base add ons (GEX UTX FEX TrafficX) then all your planes...Then I tweaked FSX till it was great.... Install all payware...Deep optmize defragg it..Then make one master back up to my 650 gig E/Drive (also storage drive)

Any problems ever with FSX or OS...Bam..Load my back up in and in 45 minutes I'm all set to go again.....

No install, regestering , tweaking..nothing..go fly....LOL

Sorry to hear that Heywoooood

time of a second pc not used on the web? i have this at home, one with fsx mail and job connected on internet and a second one with fsx sp2 all addons and that i rarely i connect with router.

AVG? i prefer Avira, it saved me many times and it's free. Have you tried to restore system at the date before rootkit? sometimes works.

Running 4 PC's and a notebook and not one virus over the past 4 years... running Avast! virus scanner, a hardware firewall (and SuperAntispyware just to keep clean).

Extremely annoying I agree, but no use blaming FS for this.....

I'd re-install if I were you. The 'next' FS might require you to buy a Wii console :wiggle:

Hi all,
I have one piece of advice for all who have this sort of problem.Get a large external drive.Build you FS sim to how you want it.Then copy the whole thing across.next time you have a severe crash for what ever the reason you just need to delete your old install and do a new basic install. Then copy the whole thing back across. That way you do not need to keep finding all the addons you have got stored somewhere so safe you cannot find them.500gb drives are nice and cheap.

Agreed.

Sorry to hear this heywooood, I went thru similar issues with FS9. haven't had to reinstall FSX yet, yet.

It is amazing what a pain reinstalling FSX is, especially since most add so many addons to it, it makes a simple reinstall last for days. Guess that is one bright side of LOMAC and IL2, no addons, LOL. On the bright side though, you have combat now!

Heywooood,

Icarus has a good point..

I had heard that turning back a restoration point will restore damage from root virus'...

After doing the restore, delete future restore points (those that were during or after the infection date), as they will have the virus locked in it and virus detection scanners cannot go in there to clean it...

Sorry to hear it Heywood. But do like Bill said, go back to an earlier restoration point. I've done that for other things that caught a bug and it does work.

Doing a repair on my FsX did the job. I had to hunt down the folder created with all my non-default aircraft.cfgs but I got 'em back.
