Can someone whose stick men walk with severe limps design an aircraft? I have little or no artistic talent, so would I be just asking for frustration if I tried? Have most of you had design experience elsewhere before doing this?

KC, you purty much described me up there an I make planes. Not sayin they're very good ones, but i can make one:costumes:
I never had any experience at all when I started. It was (an still is) a long an hard road to follow, but if ya set you're mind to it, you can do it.

Can you recommend any Tutorials for Dummies pages :-)
I have the source for that Fiat G.59-4B screenshot that I entered in another thread, so at least I have somewhere to start thanks to some generous folks on <cough> another web site.

Not sure which program you're usin, but the Freeflight design shop has some from both gmax an fsds

There's others around , just have to kinda look for what ya need.

I have FSDS V3 as well as gmax from the FS2004 CD's, so I guess whichever tutorial I find easiest will determine which I use. thanks Gramps! Hmmm a 53 year old calling a 39 year old gramps, lol!!

I think fsds has an easier learnin curve than gmax, an with fsds bein able to use the makemdl from MS now, it might be the easiest way to go.
I like gmax myself, but it's kinda of a "each to his own" thing I reckon.
Take a look at the tuts, then if ya have any questions just ask away. I don't know as much as mathias or Gerard over at Netwings, but maybe I can help some if ya go with gmax.

Of the things needed to make planes, IMO, aritistc talent is way down the list :d I'd say these make the top 5:
1) Desire / passion
2) Time, lots of time
3) Patience, lots of patience
4) timely use of colorful language :censored: :d
5) help and support from fellow designers

<==== and here's obviously #03 out of the 'league of the artistically impaired designers' - LOL
Back when I'd tried to start with it, I couldn't get FSDS1 to run smooth (without constantly crashing) on my comp and so I had to go with GMAX.
The tools aren't that important - it's really the guy 'behind the hammer' and not the hammer itself that makes the difference.
You'll need of course all what gramps and (especially) dcc had already listed ... AND you'll need to be able to make compromises. That's sometimes the 'hardest' for me - being the incurable 'nit-picker' that I am (that really doesn't help much) - LOL
Dave, I really like your 'top five' - NO change request from this side of the cable :)
The more people you can get involved to help you, the better and faster you'll 'cross the finish line'. Only those questions not asked are stupid and can 'cost' a LOT of time.
Try to start 'simple' - or you might 'end' like me - using much too much time with the basics.
There's no such thing as THE tutorial IMO - see what's around and practice, practice and ask (fast) - the more specific you can ask, the better the answers will be.
The 'best' design forum is perhaps also that from freeflightdesign.com and there's also another great design forum @ netwings.org. Superb craftsmen like Mathias Pommerien and Gerard van der Harst post there and more ...
