Channel Islands by EarthSimulations.

This is an unashamed plug for a very talented scenery designer.

The first product to be released shortly will be photographic scenery for Alderney. It has day, night and seasonal textures with season-aware autogen

If all the islands are done like that, it's going to be an extremely nice place to fly.

It does look really nice but it covers like .00000000000001% of the earth. I guess thats the main reason I don't purchase much scenery. If you don't fly there, you don't see it.

That is also why I only buy regional stuff, like GEX, UTX, and the FTX au series. 30 dollars to cover an entire country or continent is much more enticing than a product like this. :kilroy:

I normally stay in St Brelades Bay and walk up to the dunes at St Ouens bay - they would be great for low and slow if they weren't so close to the airport.

Usually stayed with family in St.Lawrence, could walk from there to St.Helier or just about anywhere else. Among best memories was renting a Piper Archer at the airport and exploring - the water looked like the Caribbean that day. Also hitching a ride in the De Havilland Heron on one of their flights to qualify a new pilot. What a blast that was.

If somebody makes a post about an add-on that's not for you, why do you feel the need to point out why you won't be buying it if it's not actually constructive to the post or product?

As somebody who does fly around the UK, this will be a welcome addition for trips off the south coast.

There are plenty of people here and everywhere else that do just that, so I suspect he's only adding to the pot.

Regardless though, the scenery does indeed look great and it'll be perfect for the Island hopping I've wanted to do.

Looks like the UK has a growing collection of great scenery. I personally haven't flown much there (except a great deal of time in & out of West Malling).

Bob if you like Photoreal and have a bit of money to spare, the Horizon VFR scenery is excellent and it comes with great mesh. I think there is a chap posting airfields for the UK on Avsim, but I don't remember his name off hand, sorry. Gary Summons has released several packages for FSX now, including his GA airfields for the south of the UK. For Scotland, you'll want to look at Scotflights scenery, this includes landclass, mesh and many updated airfields.

hi

George kindly pointed out he'd made this post so I've come along to see what's being said. Thanks for the post George and thanks also for your replies everyone.

I'd like to respond if I may to the couple of posts mentioning that the area we are releasing is quite small. I can fully appreciate that it is geographically, but this project isn't about large coverage so I want to try dispelling the idea that we're aiming to release just another photo scenery if I can.

Firstly it would help to see it as 6 times as much coverage in remembering that there are a full six sets of textures. Winter , hardwinter, spring, summer, autumn and night.

And then you have to remember that each one of those six sets of textures has been produced at a ultra high 30cm resolution. or to put it another way 16x as much data as your average photo scenery
Full seasonal coverage on photographic scenery is a first ever (afaik) in flightsim. And that is because it really has been a very difficult thing to achieve and have looking something approaching realistic at the same time. Even moreso perhaps because of the resolutions involved.
Another first with this product is the 3d autogen. This has been hacked and rebuilt almost completely from the ground up, and is not remotely like standard FS autogen. What makes it different apart from it probably looking nicer than default, is the vareity of object that make up the scenes and a lot of those are animated. Also it provides a lot denser in coverage at the same FS settings compared to default, while maintaining the same or even a better level of performance. The autogen in the project is also seasonal aware as George pointed out. Which again is a first (afaik) That doesn't just mean that the trees change during the course of the year, they do ... but means lots of other catagory of object will alter during the year. Theres some examples in the screenshots George posted at the start of this thread and some more over on our site, but thats by no means all of it and I don't think the beta team have managed to find all of it yet.

Anyway, I guess my point being that... it may be a reletively small geographical area but it produces a lot of data and a hellava lot of work to get it at this level of detail. Alderney alone at a full ONE gig worth.. and has taken months of work to getting working like it does.
So it's fair to say IMHO that this is really quite a big product in terms of innovative features and detail.

If mods feel my reply is a little advert like you may wish to remove it, That's ok, I just wanted to explain why comparing the product to some other larger photo areas wouldn't be comparing apples with apples which is difficult to do without it coming accross as an advert tbh :)

Can't say I had a pleasant experience with these guys. For one thing the download was horribly slow. I always pull down from Orbx on release day at 2.5MB/s, but I got 100-400k from these guys, and that's with 7 concurrent connections. Even more displeasing it took them 3 hours to send me my serial number.

I spent the whole night waiting on these guys and didn't even get to see the scenery. Needless to say I was not pleased, though I will be back with some shots tonight.

In all fairness, and fully understanding your frustration (I haven't been able to download my copy yet), the developer has been very upfront about the unexpected difficulties they've been having with their ISP. The customer service has been quick in my experience--I ran out of downloads last night, sent a customer service request, and my download counter was reset by the time I woke up.

I think once these download issues are past you will find the product (I did get to test out the beta) and customer service are top notch. In fact, the product is beyond top notch, it's breaking new ground.

I concur with the above chaps. I also had download problems, went through a fair number of downloads too actually, and ES have been utterly helpful about it all. Couldn't ask for more.

The download issues are with 1&1 Internet. A lot of people using them are having issues at the moment so apart from moving host, there's not much they can do.

What a utterly horrible experience this scenery has been. Here I am on night two and I still have not seen what this package has to offer.

I fired it up and there was no autogen. I found a forum post that told me to copy the contents of such and such folder into the corresponding FSX folder, which I did, and now I've got a few houses showing up, but that's it. No trees, no objects, and only half the buidings show up.

I found another forum post with a supposed solution, though it links to a private forum.

This has been the worst add on experience I can recall..... Two nights in a row I get excited, and then I'm denied. Not a good feeling.

Almost everything in the scenery is based on autogen and scenery density, do you have those all the way to the right? I can barely keep things at mid-level on default scenery, but with this I max out my autogen and it flies beautifully.

This of course might not be a solution, but it is all I can think of at the moment, so worth throwing out there.

I have yet to buy this, but I wonder if the customer service problems are caused by time differences.

Even in a 'global market', a small 'one man' company (like most FS developers) cannot stay awake 24 hours a day sending out e-mails and serial numbers.

As customers, we now demand an awful lot, because the 'big boys' in the marketplace can afford full automation on e-commerce. Often, these small guys learn as they go along, I am sure things will improve sooner or later with this company.

Hi,
I am sorry that you are having such a poor experience with the Alderney product This is far from what we would wish for you.
As far as the download problems go I can only say that we were let down by an ISP who didn't deliver what was promised but, rest assured, that is currently being dealt with.
As far as your missing autogen is concerned could I suggest that you send a post with details of the problem you have to our Technical Forum here,

Solar, I had the same problem as you but mine was fixed by copying the folders. Did you overwrite each file with the new one? I'd try it again, just to be safe. In defense of the product, I've had no problems with downloading or flying in it since I did that fix.

Success!!! I copied the files over again with the same results, so I uninstalled Alderney, turned FTX mode ON, restored pristine files to my Orbx backups folder, turned FTX mode OFF, and reinstalled Alderney.

Performance is naturally good since it's an island, so with untweaked extremely dense autogen, high 2.x water, and LOD 8 frames were over 40, which combined with the fidelity achieved makes for a very enjoyable experience. The autogen is quite detailed. Given the nature of the product I bet high resolution trees would add a lot, but as is I like the vegetation with it's stylized look.

Over all I'd say this is the best scenery of the year so far, and I'm looking forward to experiencing other choice UK landscapes in this stunning detail.

I've used Internet Download Manager exclusivly for a few years now. By far the best one I've tested. Has a 30 day trial too, though if you can't even get trickle I doubt it would be of any use. Worth a try perhaps as it's free for 30 days. It tyically opens 7 connections, so even a trickle should be multiplied by 7.

I purchased this yesterday and still haven't been able to successfully download it :frown:

10 attempts so far. Tried Firefox, IE, download managers etc, no luck :banghead:

Waiting for the download counter to be reset so I can try again.

Dave, I just received an email detailing that my download URL may have an extra digit and I believe it has, you may want to check your emails too.

Hi Nick,

Got the e-mail, but it's the serial number that has the extra digit.
Not been able to try that out yet!

Sorry Dave, I was too hasty. Just started up the download again, it appears my account has been re-set (thank you) and I'm getting 800k at the moment. Fingers crossed.

Look at the parasailing dude! I was going to try and cut his ropes with my blades but he appears to have the capacity to phase out of the third dimension when I draw near. Drat!

Well the last download went without a hitch, I had to manually copy some files to see all the Autogen and Scenery, but what an impressive project. What amazes me is the amount of custom objects with no performance hit. The boats that rock in the sea are a real gem too!

Right, off to Jersey for lunch.

I didn't even ask for one Dave. I was waiting for an update on their ISP with one download left, went back into my account to check the URL again, lo and behold I had 5 downloads left. That's what happens when you say your prayers every night to our great lord Microsoft.

OT: Nice Hunter Dave :applause:

Yes I've tried all sorts of equations today, but sadly the sum still totals zero.

All you have to do is divide by zero...like this: 0/0=̕̚ ̔̕̚̕̚҉ i ҉̵̞̟̠̖̗̘̙̜̝̞̟̠͇̊̋̌̍̎̏̐̑̒̓̔̊̋̌̍̎̏̐̑̒̓̔̿̿̿̕̚̕̚͡ ̔̕̚̕̚҉ ҉̵̞̟̠̖̗̘̙̜̝̞̟̠͇̊̋̌̍̎̏̐̑̒̓̔̊̋̌̍̎̏̐̑̒̓̔̿̿̿̕̚̕̚͡ ͡" :pop4:

eeeeeeeeeek!:icon_eek:

Uhhh...nevermind carry on.

Has anybody tried 'driving' this scenery already ?.... The screenshots appear to be begging for it.... ( with a horse and cart preferably.... tsjik,tsjik.. )

Perhaps somebody remembers that beautiful imaginairy island we had in FS2K ??.... ( forgotten the name.. )

The designer made special arrangements for this island to be enjoyed from driving a car as well. ( you could hire one at the airport :) )

This fantastic Alderney scenery seems to be just the right place for such a thing too. Maybe somebody could have a go and report back ??.....

I guess there must be one or two cars for hire in FSX already ?...

Or use that AAV-7A1 that's just been released.... wake up the inhabitants.. :d

cheers,
jan

There again, a paddle steamer is another possibility:
