View Full Version : Dumb question about the Russian Front

Hi all,
Been lurking for awhile, just joined, and I've gotta ask- why aren't there any mods for the Russian Front? I've searched the net and found one attempt at creating an Eastern Front mod, but it doesn't seem to have gone anywhere...

I'm not actually a Russian Front junkie, it's more intellectual curiosity- the ETO is VERY vigorously developed, there're full campaigns for the PTO and the Med, but aside from the Russian Front about the only thing left would be an ASW campaign out of Brazil :costumes:

Apologies if this is a sore subject- I did a search before posting but didn't find anything. It struck me as odd that such a varied and talented group hadn't tackled every possible theater, and I wondered why.

I've been getting back to flight sims after being grounded (permanently) in real life, so hopefully this group can fill a void.

Clear skies!

Probably because that theatre is covered by Another Sim people haven't got around to developing for it yet. However there's nothing actually stopping anyone making a start, all that's needed is enthusiasm, good research and large dollop of know-how. And a thick skin when the knockers come calling.

If it's of any interest, someone posted preliminary pics of a Sturmovik model for CFS3 recently:- http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=733 (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=733)

There is a forum from the Eastern Front Developers (http://easternfront.myfastforum.org/ftopic5-10.php), but there hasn't been a post for months it seems.

Creating a new theatre complete with terrain is a major job. It isn't like CFS2 where with a bit of work, anybody can bang something together. And the one who perfected the techniques, Ed Wilson, has unfortunately passed away. That makes it pretty improbable in my book that an Eastern Front theatre will ever see the light of day.

However, there are the aircraft available; obviously the German/Axis aircraft are no problem, but there are also a number of Soviet fighters for download. I have I-15, I-16, MiG-3, La-5, 9, 11 and the obvious leand-lease P-40s, Hurris, Spits, etc. Reg's Hangar has some first-class Soviet vehicles, and I'm sure that a few Russian style buildings, etc, wouldn't be too hard to do in GMAX.
