Until the fixes come through Asobo/Microsoft themselves, this guy has been going through Iceland and Alaska fixing many of the lake and river heights and tree issues in those areas:

Iceland: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/freeware-iceland-water-height-and-tree-coverage-fix/212134

Alaska: https://www.msfsaddons.org/freeware/updated-alaska-water-fix

An additional cool piece of scenery by the same individual, Dead Cow Lakebed Airstrip and Fly-in: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/freeware-dead-cow-lakebed-airstrip-high-sierra-fly-in/191430

Here is a fix for the Missouri River: https://www.msfsaddons.org/freeware/missouri-water-fix

Photgrammetric Stonehenge: https://www.msfsaddons.org/freeware/stonehenge

A large number of freeware addon liveries and airport scenery can be accessed from the https://www.msfsaddons.org/ site, and there seems to be new items every day.

When installing any of these addons, it is just the most simple process of dragging and dropping the folders into the "Community" folder within your main MSFS installation location. You don't have to mess with the Asobo/MS content. This is also the same location that any other payware/freeware addon plane/scenery is installed to as well.

Also, this thread provides information on how anyone can use the SDK tools to remove and adjust the types of any specific trees if needed: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/specific-tree-removal/154666

Freakin' awesome... thanks Bomber!

sigh

And here, I thought I wouldn't be doing any scenery modeling... wishful thinking

Speaking of which, I do have models of the hangar and American Heritage museum at the Collings Foundation field I created in SolidWorks and figured out how to import into FSX GMax.

And, come to think of it, a FS9 model I believe of the Haystack Observatory in Westford that desperately needs to be properly modeled as it's a landmark that can be seen for many miles in the Nashua, NH/Metrowest Boston area. I wonder if it's usable. Somebody made it for me many years ago and said I could use it in scenery I was creating for the area.

Trying to keep up with all of the latest freeware scenery releases. A few of these are repeats of those already previously posted (from here on I won't be repeating any going forward), and some are brand new as of just today and yesterday. Please add more to this thread that you know of/come to find.

These are all very nice indeed! I need to start looking into this SDK myself and make or redo stuff.

I wonder how these corrections may conflict with future updates from Asobo.

I have been following the threads over at FSDeveloper on MSFS. They are coming up with some good tools.

If folks at Asobo are smart they will get approval for the DYI's to use the existing fixes as updates to the game.

What's so great about these scenery fixes and addons is that, as the person installing/using them, nothing actually gets modified in the Asobo/MS game files (no manual editing of anything, no having to make "scenery library" changes, etc.). Even with the elevation fixes, just like the addon airports/liveries/aircraft, all you're doing is adding a folder of files to the 'Community' folder, never touching or modifying the official sim files. If you decide to remove the scenery/addons at any time, all you have to do is delete or move the folder(s) out of the 'Community' folder.

Also, here are a few more new ones (wish we could edit older posts):

Yep, we're not even two weeks into the release of this sim yet. Some of what is being released right now is by folks just having fun experimenting to see what can be achieved in a short period of time with an SDK that is not yet finished. Back when FSX was released (October 2006), it took four months before the first real quality addon aircraft was released for it (Robert Bruce's Bristol Fighter).

MSFS is going to be the biggest game in town for a long time to come, and we'll see brand new and exceptional aircraft developed in-time, probably unlike we've ever seen before (just look at the default aircraft in this sim compared to the default aircraft in any other flight sim to-date). Even from the perspective of Asobo/MS, in their own words they're only just getting started themselves with this sim.

Can someone tell me how they installed the Sydney Bridge and Tower? My MSFS is on the D: drive, where it was pointed during installation, and consists of the main folder and then two others inside: Community and Store. That's it. The installation instructions say to go to %localappdata%, then go to Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_RANDOMLETTERS\L ocalCache\Packages\ and place "aw-airport-ensd-anda" into the Community folder (these are on the C: drive here). For me, there's no Community folder in that location, much less a /community/addon_folder/addon_files.

Created these addon folders in both the D: and C: locations, and no luck.

And what's the "aw-airport-ensd-anda" that's mentioned?

Hope you can help! :)

Do a search on "Community". It's where you installed the 100 gigs of download for MS2020.

Do a search on "Community". It's where you installed the 100 gigs of download for MS2020.

Thanks. Yes, I had a good look, which is why I'm confused. There are three MSFS folders named "Community".

D:\WindowsApps\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_1.7.14.0_ x64__8wekyb3d8xxxx\Packages\fs-base-ui\html_ui\icons\community (contains .svg files)
D:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-2972812404-325697429-812407575-xxxx\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimula tor_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community
D:\MSFS2020\Community

The last is the one with the full MSFS 100Gb install. There are just two folders, "Community" and "Store", and that's all. In "Community" I created the indicated folders manually and then put the Sydney bridge put in there, but nothing shows in the sim.

This is the correct one, yet be aware you can not make sub-folders, so the scenery must place directly "under" Community. So:
D:\MSFS2020\Community\sydneyharbourbridge

This works on my end.

Who knows if they'll ever correct it... They did the same thing in FSX default planes to save texture space, the Cub, the Dash 8, and I think some others, they mapped the plane so only the left side was actually painted, then mirrored on the right side, and, yes, the there are decals for logos, which is why you can change the N-number on the fly on a plane.

So, technically it's correct... it would be nice if they remapped the model in the future so the left and right side aren't mirrored.

Ok, I downloaded the Missouri River fix. The zip file contains a folder, which contains another folder of the same name, which contains, "the scenery". The installation instructions say "simply" unzip the zip file directly into your community folder. So, my question is:

Does that mean:

This? (A)

http://www.prbdatasystems.com/pics/s2.JPG

Or this? (B)

http://www.prbdatasystems.com/pics/s1.JPG

And my second question is: what has to be done after that? Because I tried both ways, and my Missouri river is not fixed.

PRB
September 7th, 2020, 11:12
Nevermind. Figured it out. Downloaded a simple free airport, got it working, looked at what a working scenery folder looks like, and went digging through the Missouri River fix download, searching for a folder that contained similar stuff. It's in there. That's the folder you put in your community folder, not the entire unzipped file from the download.

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?catid=255&linkid=27019

If you grabbed the original, just delete it from the Community folder in your FS install and drag the new folder over. This fixes the water weirdness at the end of the runway and adds some more objects around buildings that are near the airport.

Devil's Tower available here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uKMf66a9UMx2uq5VDHsdqT0Abz1bZnf5

(as found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/FS2020Creation/comments/im5q8w/devils_tower_release_download/)

John, i'd love to download and install Devil's Tower but can't seem to get that organised from neither reddit.com nore drive.google.com. ( is that some sort of 'Box' alternate ?..)

Reddit looks like just a forum ? The link brings me to a forum thread about Devil's Tower with a few screenies (looks great!) but no download link. 'Add-On Downloads' contains just one post with a number of links to MSFS add-ons (can't find Devil's Tower amongst them). I registered at Reddit just to be sure.

The first link brings me to 'Drive' which also shows a few great screenshots of Devil's Tower but also a zip file that can be openend with Zip Extractor. Did that and have the content in this 'Drive' environment but can't seem to find a way to move those files anywhere else ?

Did you manage to download/install this Devil's Tower scenery yourself, John ?

If afirm, how ???

Thanks!

I prefer to keep all "Flight Sim" related stuff off my C: drive so I moved it all to E:. The address of mine is: E:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-936619755-2409447364-1802826837-1000\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimula tor_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community

Yeah, that's essentially what I ended up with. I hate how convoluted the installation process was, I just want it at D:\MSFS2020\Packages\Community

And OneStore as the main folder name, really????

Got my MSFS via Steam. Installed on a new, dedicated 2TB SSD. MSFS core at D: Steamlibrary/steamapps/common/MicrosoftFlightSimulator. Next to that on D: MSFSPackages/Community which contains all add-on stuff. MSFSPackages/Official/Steam which contains the 100GB MSFS stuff that was downloaded. There's also an OrbxLibrary here that was created when i installed the new Orbx Central and bought the Insbrück scenery.

After i downloaded the "liveriesmegapack" i unzipped it into D:/MSFSPackages/Community and Bob was my Uncle.

Can't remember exactly but i believe i got the option to install this MSFSPackages folder anywhere i wanted before downloading and installing MSFS.

Jan, in the Reddit posts, the download links are always posted by the author in the comments section, so you usually always have to click on the blue bar that reads "View Entire Discussion" to find the post with the download link.

In the case of Devil's Tower, you can also download it from here: https://flightsim.to/file/186/devil-s-tower

Lately, these are all of the sites/pages I routinely check once or twice a day for new MSFS addons:

https://flightsim.to/
https://www.msfsaddons.org/
https://www.reddit.com/r/FS2020Creation/
https://forums.flightsimulator.com/c/flying/world-discovery/
https://forums.flightsimulator.com/c/flying/airports/
https://forums.flightsimulator.com/c/flying/user-screenshot-gallery/
...as well as the MSFS Aircraft and MSFS Scenery sections of the https://www.flightsim.com library (it has been wonderful to see Neil Birch doing his line of UK farm strips now for MSFS)

"Baddweapon", on the MSFS forums, routinely updates his Iceland and Alaska scenery overhauls every few to several days, so it is always worth keeping track of them to see when the next updated/expanded version is released (he has done wonders!). He also just released an updated version of his fantastic Dead Cow Lakebed STOL Competition airfield.

I just found a very promising KILM over at flightsim.to too. It's a favorite destination when I want a nice relaxing trip to the beach.

Edit: Nevermind... The terminal building looks nice, but there's too much else that doesn't work well.

Thank you John and John ! Got it! :encouragement:

And thanks John for explaining about Reddit and other links. Amazing how much freeware stuff is already available for MSFS in such short time (i suppose the're all alpha/beta testers...) By now i still haven't even discovered half of what's going on behind the curtains of MSFS.

Although not exactly sure what it's all about yet i signed up at Discord.

For anybody interested here's the default bit sorry looking Devil's Tower:

Plenty of those Muppets out there!
Problem will always be there as a lot(not all!)of the X-Boxers are cut from the same cloth.
We have to put up with them in the Race Simulation world.

Nothing wrong with people who want to play these games the way they want to play them.

All this hostility, and for what? And name calling, really guys? Because someone uploaded a repaint you don't like to a completely different website?

I posted about the paint, not because I don't like it, but (considering the PC atmosphere today) I was surprised it is there for download. I think the paint is hilarious. Btw, I contacted the guy who uploaded it to ask what the lettering on the tail, and the cartoon underneath the aircraft meant? He replied, explaining that the tail lettering meant, "Wassup!", and the cartoon means "Have fun!" NC

I was referring to some of the other comments that seemed to be in response to your posting of the repaint. Maybe I misread the tone, just seemed like there were some needlessly hostile comments towards people who don't enjoy this hobby the same way we do.

Thank you for sharing that info, and while I agree with you that it's not really my thing, seems like a nice repaint with a positive message, if you are into that sort of thing.. whatever "that sort of thing" is, I can't keep up with the youngins anymore :encouragement:

The author, Adnan Arif, has found a file in MSFS that controls the range of heights used to generate the heights of trees of various species. For example, for deciduous trees, the range of 15 to 20 feet he reduces to 12 to 16 feet.

Swapping this single xml file results in a more realistic landscape. And it sure makes it easier to find your house!

We should be welcoming the gamers, not mocking them. Today's curious gamer is tomorrow's flight sim fanatic. Us 50-to-80-year-old simmers who grew up on Sublogic's Flight Sim II are eventually going to all die and where's the genre then? :)

Meanwhile, still waiting on a warbird, but maybe this meets halfway in the meantime. :)

That's interesting, because most of the deciduous trees by my house are around 50 ft to 60 ft tall. It's an old neighborhood and the trees are well established. I guess if you live in a new build neighborhood, most of the trees are that small.

Tom Clayton
September 17th, 2020, 21:04
What would really be nice would be to have a random mix between the old/tall trees and the newer/shorter ones. Have a look at the neighborhood in this link. Some of the trees are young, but some are 100+ years old and absolutely massive!

I have two trees behind my house that, according to my drone's altimeter, are over 120 feet tall. We do trees big in the PNW.

Indeed..
& what is a 'true' simmer?

We are all playing the same 'game', as it were!

Just because we are having fun, do not judge us. Simming is all about Fun Fact & Fiction.. we are not false simmers because of that..

True simmers, than, according to you, will never fly a Cessna with a joystick!.. How can that be true, if you do?

Because someone uploaded a repaint you don't like to a completely different website? The hostility has to do with the wording on the aircraft. Wording that involves profanity is not tolerated at SOH. If the aircraft paint were submitted here, it would never have made it to the download section. The messages regarding the paint scheme are a reminder regarding what is acceptable and what is not.

Agreed (about swear words). Not something I think is really funny or care about seeing. Then again, I'm 57, not 12-15... sigh

As far as trees, heck, trees around me (NE, USA) reach thirty feet tall in 20 years, the general canopy around me (deciduous/coniferous) is easily 30 ft to 50 ft tall. 12 to 15 foot tall trees would only be found in a nursery, or approaching the treeline on a mountain.
