Flew around a bit last night and all I can say is wow - I had Storm weather at Lee Vining near Yosemite, and the weather and lighting - just simply wow! Surprisingly good on framerates, although my old machine is struggling a bit with cities, its beautiful in the countryside.

Its going to take a while to get used to the controls, and so far I've only landed a couple of times having been flying in VR for a long time, its very tough trying to get used to a 2D screen again!!

Has anyone managed to port an old mdl into the new sim?

Might give it a go this weekend just to see.

They are not great.

i7 920 at 2.67Ghz
Samsung Evo 1Tb SSD
32Gb RAM
GeForce GTX 1070
Windows 10 Home 64 bit

Its not great, but it's not awful either, even with most settings at Ultra, out in the countryside flying bush planes its not at all bad.

Ed, you can fly MSFS, just not at ultra settings!

In your opinion is that worth the purchase then?

I can not see the difference between Ultra and High End (one step lower).

I'd say absolutely worth it.

But you can also do the Xbox Game pass for one month at $5 to see how it runs on your rig before making the purchase.

That is what I did. I will cancel the game pass at the end of my 1st month, and go for the purchase then.
When I did the game pass, they offered it a $1 for the 1st month. Not sure if that is still being offered.

Be prepared for a VERY large download +90Gb.

Ed,

I would just say that installing it on an SSD is IMHO a must. If only for your nerves. You might want to avoid long loading times.

Also consider your internet connection. It has to be real broadband in order to enjoy this sim to the full.

I prefer telling you, before you spend the cash to find out that it isn't what you expected it to be.

I was on the alpha/beta "team" and I can say that it is in no way like FSX was in the beginning. (I didn't have the rig yet in my sig)

I'm buying the real deal this weekend. I want to have the time to install it, and preferably when most downloaders (USA) are asleep.

PS: what version were you thinking about?

One thing worth noting is that you can manually cache any area on the globe - ie download low, high and/or ultra tiles from anywhere so that your system has them on disk and doesn't have to download the data over and over.

IOW, you DO NOT have to have your internet connection active to fly in the sim.

(But as has been noted, it could take a LOT of disk space)

Are all the lights dynamic (actually shine on objects) like X Plane? Or are they like in P3Dv5..only shine on certain objects.?

The lights illuminate any surface that they are near, including planes, buildings, ground surfaces, water and even clouds. There are no night textures - all of the lighting is generated from the light sources themselves. Even the AI car traffic and airport vehicles have dynamic lighting (headlights, brake lights, flashing lights) that illuminates any surface.

All of the reflections on all of the glossy surfaces are actual live reflections as well, whether it be on the planes, on the buidlings/building windows, water, etc. When seated in the cockpit, all of the reflections on the windows are dynamic/live and you can actually read your gauge and avionics readouts, live, as they're happening, within the reflections on the interior cockpit windows (albeit mirrored of course).
