***Super Carrier Update***

https://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=215599&stc=1&d=1565954009

DCS: Supercarrier Update
Since our last update on this eagerly awaited module, our team has been focused on several core features of simulation of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier:

Creating the most accurate and detailed carrier model ever created for a flight simulation. This is not simply an update to the existing John C. Stennis aircraft carrier that we released last year, but rather a new object that is built from the ground up with accurate dimensions, high-resolution mesh and textures; animations for the elevators, antennas, defense systems, launch officer bubble, risers, catapults, jet blast deflectors, and more. The module will include unique skins for all ships of the Roosevelt sub-class that includes the Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), George Washington (CVN73), John C. Stennis (CVN-74), and the Harry S. Truman (CVN-75). Not only will there be the correct names and CVN numbers, but we also plan unique textures and deck weathering for each ship!

The Supercarrier will include the most accurate simulation of carrier communications you have ever heard in a game. This includes Case I, II, and III operations and unique voice overs for departure, marshal, approach, tower, the landing signal officer (LSO), and even messages over the 5 MC. Many of these parts are voiced by service members that filled the actual roles! We will also include the needed voice over files to support all aircraft types that have flown from a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, including the F-14.

To make the carrier deck feel alive, deck crew is a must. We are doing this through a combination of static-placed deck crew with animations that mission creators can place and fully pathed and animated deck crew that support launch operations from all four catapults. We are pushing this feature past anything that has been done before.

https://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=215595&stc=1&d=1565954009https://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=215596&stc=1&d=1565954009https://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=215597&stc=1&d=1565954009

In addition to these three core areas, we are also working on / planning:

Up to 18 spawning locations on the carrier deck.
Flood lights in addition to standard lighting.
Long Range Laser Lineup System.
Barricade net.
Deck equipment like the crane, fire truck, and mules.
Detailed Landing Signal Officer (LSO) station with functional panels to control cut lights, wave off lights, manual ball control, and PLAT camera. This can be crewed while in VR.
“Burble” effect behind the carrier.
Air Boss station that can also be occupied in VR and allow control of the flood lights, barricade, and view the PLAT camera.
Immersive, 3D, Ready Room with functions to view briefings, load aircraft, view PLAT camera, vie the “Greenie Board”, view kill board that is tied to online statistics. All of this with a VR option.
Combined Arms support for steering the carrier and using weapons.

At this time, we have no release date or pricing, but they will be available at our very soonest.

Hi Storm,

I just went looking for this myself. All I could really find was a quick mention of the Forrestal carrier to be included as content for the package, along with campaigns, more training missions, A-6 and F-14A.

https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=234203

Content

Campaigns: As noted in our purchase pages, the two free campaigns will be available post launch.
Training Missions: We will expand the amount of training missions during the course of EA.
A-6, Forrestal, F-14A: We will detail our plans regarding these ASAP. The Forrestal will be priority #1.

It was only on their fakebook page a while back. Truth be told, ever since HeatBlur merged with a RL military contractor to become Meta-Simulations, I've personally not been sure that they will actually honor the carrier or the A-6 AI that was promised as part of the package. I've heard rumors that ED and HB have had some "issues". what those could be is purely speculation. But the fact that HB announced that they merged on the day of release of the Tomcat is not very good news. I know that "Cobra" over on the ED forums (the owner of HB) released a statement, but it was full of ambiguity and business buzz words. Nothing like his previous posts which were 100% transparent and very community involved. There hasn't been a single lick of progress reporting on anything other than F-14B bug fixes and the occasional F-14A is coming. My guess is that they are now on another timeline and will simply fulfill their legal obligation to ED and their customer base and then they're out. I'm not keen on that being true. That is my own speculation, but it's also MANY others as well in the various Discords and Forums I'm a part of. I really hope that Meta-simulations will come through and continue to produce modules. They set the benchmark with the Tomcat. IMHO it's not just a module. It's THE module. Period. That group did EVERYTHING that ED has been promising for the Hornet and MORE and continued to update their Viggen all the while. TWS. Check, Targeting Pod. Check. AI RIO. Check. Etc. Etc. The list is lengthy. And all that was available at release! I would personally love to see them do a simpler aircraft like the F-100D or a complex aircraft like the F-4E or F-4J.

****In the latter part of 2019, we released a video showing off some of the early fun parts of this project. We are now nearing the finish line. Much of the remaining work involves adjusting the complex deck crew animations to support the launching of aircraft from all four catapults; ship lights that include the floodlights, the Improved Fresnel Optical Landing System (IFLOLS), and landing area lights; damage modelling; network copy protection; and up to 14 spawn points in multiplayer for client aircraft.

Following the early access release, more features will be added that include a briefing room, more ships of the class, player IFLOLS operation, and more.****
****We are pleased to announce that the DCS: Supercarrier module will also include a greatly updated Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier (without deck animation), the Su-33 Flanker D for DCS World (for those of you who don’t already own it), and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer!

The Kuznetsov is a Russian-built aircraft carrier that is substantially improved over the existing version in DCS World. It is a completely new model with detailed geometry, textures, lighting, and animations. Players can operate the Su-33 Flanker D from the Kuznetsov, including carrier landings and ski-jump ramp takeoffs. In addition to a formidable suite of surface-to-air defenses, the Kuznetsov is also armed with P-700 Granit anti-ship cruise missiles. The Kuznetsov sister ship, the Varyag, was sold to China and now serves in the Chinese Navy as the Liaoning.
A cornerstone of today’s American Carrier Battle Group (CVBG) is an array of Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers. Built around the SPY-1D radar and AEGIS battle management system, the Arleigh Burke-class provides an effective air defense umbrella around the CVBG and is also armed with Harpoon and Tomahawk cruise missiles, close-in gun systems, torpedoes, and a 5-inch deck gun.

***These new naval elements to DCS World will be at home in the recently announced Mariana Islands map. Although the island portion of the map will be approximately 400x400 km, the overall map size will be 1000x1000 km in order to provide realistic ranges for modern-day naval operations, sensors, and weapon systems.

As with the new Nimitz-class aircraft carrier model for Supercarrier, the Kuznetsov and Arleigh Burke will be visible to all in multiplayer, regardless if you own the Supercarrier module.

DCS: Supercarrier will be available for pre-order on January 17th with a 30% discount and will deliver as an Open Beta by the end of Q1 2020. Owners of DCS: F/A-18C will receive a discount when purchasing DCS: Supercarrier.****

DCS: Supercarrier (https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/shop/modules/supercarrier/)

Pre-purchase
Requires DCS World version 2.5.6 or above!
DCS: Supercarrier is the most detailed and realistic simulation of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier ever created. A Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is a nuclear-powered fortress at sea with a crew of over 6,000 sailors and airmen. The angled flight deck with arrestor wires and four steam-powered catapults support air wing operations of up to 90 aircraft. The ship also includes a formidable air defense system that includes the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow Missile and RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) missiles, and Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) gun system. A Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is the ultimate power projection weapon.

Odie / Others - Just a reminder that the carrier will not be available for use for a couple months (AFAIK, someone mentioned 4/1/2020). I would recommend a US Navy aircraft like the F/A-18 or F-14 as your first purchase. You will get a carrier with DCS and once you have a good US Navy aircraft for it, you will be able to prepare for the release of the carrier. It took me a couple sessions before I was anywhere competent at landing on the carrier.

Here is a quick review of my Case 1 (VFR) carrier landing pattern in the F/A-18: Upwind about 10 miles ("Instant Action" release point) (a) hook down, Tacan to 74X, HSI to Tacan 10 mile range....as you approach carrier on about a 360 / 010 heading get to 800' AGL / AWL and 400 KTS.... passing carrier to your left check clear deck and slowly count to 10, break left level at 800', pull 4 G's (or your speed divided by 100), level out on reciprocal heading (180) with speed below 275 KTS, drop gear and flaps, watch outside for carrier to about your 7 o'clock / HSI until Tacan pointer to 7 o'clock, turn back toward carrier to line up with angle deck, look for ball (I've never seen it very well, so I use HUD "E" bracket and aircraft path symbol), approach speed is between 135 - 140 (watch you indexer lights, but I find the HUD "E" bracket and aircraft path symbol a better speed indicator (bracket above path FAST, bracket below path SLOW)). Catch the number 3 wire (lol). Hook up, turn right to exit the landing area....nothing to it. (That is sarcasm...it is quite challenging.)

Good luck. Buy now while things are on sale!

Also, keep in mind that if you own the Tomcat by Heatblur, you're getting the F-14B, F-14A & USS Forrestal & possibly an AI A-6 tanker as part of the total purchase. Not to mention Jester AI and all the missions and in game training tutorials. It's the best value in all of DCS World hands down.

Unique Carriers

For DCS: Supercarrier, we will be providing all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers of the Theodore Roosevelt subclass. These include:

CVN-71 USS Theodore Roosevelt
CVN-72 USS Abraham Lincoln
CVN-73 USS George Washington

These will be the first three carriers released at Early Access. After the Early Access release, we will provide:

CVN-74 USS John C. Stennis
CVN-75 USS Harry S. Truman

In addition to unique naming and numbering of the carriers, they will also have unique geometry. This is most evident in the islands (towers and antennas). Please see attached and note that they are work in progress.

Each ship will also have unique carrier communication callsigns.

Thanks,
Wags

***New FAQ***Thread***
Dear all,

We have been reading all your great feedback and questions on DCS: Supercarrier, and we wanted to create a FAQ to consolidate all of our answers. We will continue to read all of your questions, and we will update this FAQ. Please keep 'em coming.

---

Will Supercarrier support the F-14 Tomcat at Early Access release?

Yes. We are working with Heatblur to make this happen and we are making progress. While we cannot promise 100% that it will be ready for the Early Access launch, it will certainly be ready in short order thereafter.

Will plane directors marshal players and the AI to catapults?

Yes this is in the design specification of the module but will come after the initial Early Access release.

We also plan to have a plane director guide aircraft out of their parking location and hand off the aircraft to another plane director to guide the aircraft to the catapult.
Once the aircraft is close behind the jet blast deflector, the aircraft is then passed off to the plane director on the catapult.

Will you include a salute animation for the Hornet pilot?

Yes, we are currently updating the pilot models for the Hornet and the Viper, and we plan to include some animations. This will come after the initial Early Access release.

Is there also a key command for the Salute?

Yes, it’s Left Shift+Left Ctrl+S.

Can you collide with the deck crew?

No, at the initial Early Access release they have no collision model. Later, we hope to add a form of self-preservation logic to avoid collisions.

Will the elevators work?

Yes, they will work automatically for the AI to move aircraft off the deck to prevent over-crowding. Later with the inclusion of the Air Boss station, we will also allow players to manually raise and lower them.

Will the hangar be included?

Yes, and modeling is already underway. However, given that pilots never get into or out of their aircraft in the hangars, this is a lower priority and is scheduled for a later date.

Will red shirt ordnance animations be included?

We have no such plans at this time due to the unrealistically large investment required to support all weapon types and the huge permutations of placement on the aircraft.

How will aircraft be moved around the deck for cyclic operations?

Actual movement is not possible for static aircraft and deck crew given their nature as static. However, using the Mission Editor, adding a simple static despawn event for such units is planned.

How is the performance?

A lot will depend on your computer, how the deck is populated, and level of detail of the models used to populate the deck. However, given that the carrier is at sea, there is no terrain or ground objects to render like an airbase. It goes without saying that the larger the number of high poly count aircraft on deck the bigger the hit.

Why is Supercarrier not free or included with the Hornet?

A tremendous amount of time, effort, and capital has gone into this sophisticated module, and more is still do come. The development cost of Supercarrier rivals many of our aircraft modules. To include it with the Hornet would drive up the cost of the Hornet well over a $100. Please also note that we provided an all new carrier with the release of the Hornet at no extra cost.

How will deck crew night launch operations be supported?

We are working on the addition of glow sticks and aircraft light flash signals. Vests also have reflective patches. This will probably come after the initial Early Access release.

***mini update***
"Hey everyone,
To give you a head start learning operations around the boat, we have attached a preliminary copy of the DCS: Supercarrier Guide, created by Bunyap.

Please note that this is work-in-progress and we'll be adding a chapter on using the LSO station, some adjustments to the radio messages, and some tuning of the deck crew hand signals. However, this should get you started.

Thanks,
Wags

updateHow will deck crew night launch operations be supported?
We are working on the addition of glow sticks and aircraft light flash signals. Vests also have reflective patches. This will probably come after the initial Early Access release.
What is include at Early Access launch?
• Highly detailed polygon model
• High resolution textures that include realistic weathering and markings
• Animated arresting wires and lifts (AI controlled at first)
• Animated radar antennas
• Animated aircraft elevators
• Animated catapult bubble between catapults 1 and 2
• Steam from catapults
• Deck lighting
• Risers (guard rails) around aircraft elevators when lowered
• Populated island crew
• Long range line up lights
• Animated “rabbit lights” along landing area center line
• IFLOLS
• Damage model
• Functional air defense weapon systems:
o Sea Sparrow
o CWIS
o RAM
• Option for all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers of the Roosevelt sub-class:
o CVN-71 Theodore Roosevelt
o CVN-72 Abraham Lincoln
o CVN-73 George Washington
• Deck parking. Allow up to 14 aircraft to be spawned on deck for multiplayer missions
• Carrier radio communications for Case I, Case II, and Case III
• Static deck crew that can be placed by mission designer
• Animated deck crew for bow and waist catapults launches
• Static deck vehicles (mule, fire truck, and crane) that can be placed by mission designer
• New Kuznetsov Russian aircraft carrier
• Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer
What are the items planned for after Early Access release?
• Ready Room
• Air Boss Station
• Interactive LSO Controls like manual control of hook touch down location, hook to ramp height, wave off lights, and cut lights
• Plane directors to guide aircraft to catapults and off the landing area
• Three additional ships of the sub-class
o CVN-75 Harry S. Truman
• Rendered hangar deck
• Emergency barrier net (controlled for Air Boss station)
• Deck crew (not static deck crew) that move to avoid collisions with aircraft
• Deck crew glow sticks for night operations
• Pilot animations like the salute and right hand on grab bar
How will I take part in carrier operations if I do not own this module?
The CVN-74 John C. Stennis that was released at the same time as the Hornet will remain in DCS World as a free carrier. We will remedy all takeoff issues, but it will retain the existing model and not have deck crew, radio communications, Ready Room, LSO station, and other features included in Supercarrier.
How will it work in multiplayer if a player does not own Supercarrier”?
Anyone can join a server that includes the Supercarrier module. Owners of the module can takeoff and land on the Supercarrier, as well as use the Case 1, 2, and 3 radio communications, Ready Room, LSO station, Air Boss station, and more. Non-owners of the module will:
• See the Supercarriers, deck crew, and aircraft on the deck in missions. This will allow them to join a multiplayer mission with Supercarrier.
• Create missions with the Supercarriers using the Mission Editor.
However, if you do not own the Supercarrier module, you will not be able to spawn on the deck to takeoff or catch an arresting wire to land. You would also not be able to take advantage of the new radio communications, the Ready Room, LSO, Station, and Air Boss Station.
How will the new Kuznetsov aircraft carrier and Arleigh Burke destroyer be included?
We will keep the exiting Kuznetsov aircraft carrier as a free version, but under a different name than the new one as part of the Supercarrier module. The new Kuznestov is an entirely new model with new geometry, textures, animations, and AI taxi behaviors. In single player, ownership of the Supercarrier module is required to use the new Kuznetsova and Arleigh Burke. In multiplayer though, they will be visible to all players and can be attacked and attacked by them. This will allow players that do not own the module to still join a server that includes the module. However, in order to takeoff or land on the Kuznetsov or Burke (helos) in multiplayer, ownership is required.
What aircraft carrier communications will be included?
At Early Access launch, Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3 will be supported. After Early Access will we do additional work to include spins, pattern re-entry after a wave off or bolter, and Automatic Carrier Landing (ACL) support. You can find a preliminary version of the guide here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php…69&postcount=2 (https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=4265269&postcount=2)

But is there progress on the earlier carriers that were supposed to be part of the Tomcat package?

From HB Facebook post, 2018:

"The mighty CV-59, Heatblur Forrestal Class carrier leaves drydock for the first time! While the art team begins the texturing process, we'll be bringing her systems and functionality online. The Heatblur F-14 project includes the free DCS addition of the Forrestal, Ranger, Saratoga and Independence Forrestal class carriers amongst other free included content!

***Small Update from Russian Forums**

One of the key problems of the new module is the players’ work “not according to the rules”. It’s good when everyone steers and flies as in life — that is, they are supposed to follow the rules of taxiing, work with their deck crew, take off, get in touch with the landing and withstand the landing and crew parameters.

But if the player does something wrong, to teach the AI to resolve such situations turned out to be very difficult, although from a third perspective everything is simple and obvious. But the light at the end of the tunnel is already visible (and this is not an oncoming train).

Did I miss something? F14 not going to work initially???
Thanks
So far the F-14 has been working very well with the SC in testing, both MP and SP, that said, there might be extra issues that need solving with it into Early Access. But it is much farther along then a month ago, for sure. Mostly its things like parking issues because of its size, or other size issues not seen with the smaller Hornet.

It's out!:jump:

I just found it in my modules. Tried two simple launches and recoveries in the F-18. The crew animations are amazing! I love how you have to "salute" to launch and the instructions for proper hookup. Lots to investigate but the first feel is really good!

As a genuine carrier "nut" this is a long awaited dream for me...:wavey:

I still haven't taken the time to configure my controllers and successfully fly the Tomcat, let alone try carrier ops. Much as I'd like to have the Hornet (especially as I was with VFA-106 when they commissioned, 6 months before they received their 1st F/A-18D), I can't rationalize spending the cash on it right now. NC

Also, I do admit to being somewhat lazy, when it comes to flight simming. P3D is easier for me than DCS. Not as complex.

It takes some time indeed to configure and then learn to do even the basics in a DCS module. However, the satisfaction you get once things start working is massive. The Tomcat is amazing and so is this carrier. The animations of the deck crew are extremely natural. Combining "Jester's" chatter in the F-14 and following the launch and trapping instructions in the Supercarrier is a complete experience.

Finally, the modelling of the sea, waves and ship wakes in DCS is leaps and bounds ahead of even P3D v5. It is real 3d waves and wakes, not just textures pasted on top.

You have to give it some time and effort before starting to enjoy it.

My point exactly!!!

There is nothing like this in any other sim. Don't get me wrong, I love P3D and all the military and Navy models in there, that talented developers have put forward for us, plus the fact that you have the whole world to operate. However, the realism of naval and combat operations in DCS and this module is unparalleled so far. What you see in these videos is real and you can experience on your computer.

After my 1st test on MP yesterday on the Supercarrier, it's going to be hard to go back to boat ops in P3D, which I was recently re-visiting and installing all my ships. Even in the Tomcat, my FPS were good on the PG map with 5 guys in the pattern.

Yup. Renders P3D completely impotent. There's absolutely no circumstance I would ever go back to P3D for anything combat related. Even with the world terrain available. Simply not even a contender. Boat ops is so utterly immersive now, it's impossible to think it was any other way....I'm so impressed with this update. MP is VERY stable ATM. No deck sliding no issues.

Those shots should convince anyone on the fence. Very cool to watch the shooter after going into tension, having to look around the canopy bow in the 14 and wait...just need something on my desk to punch me in the chest for the cat stroke!

Over the past six month we have been working on a human motion model with intelligent behavior for infantry and deck crews. We have started with the deck crew, and we will scale it to infantry units. Both logics will receive two new behaviours: Obstacle Avoidance and Dynamic Reroute according to the situation. Re-routing behaviour is based on a path search algorithm with any-angle path planning.
Obstacle Avoidance is based on the Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) (https://gamma.cs.unc.edu/ORCA/) method used for holonomic robots with several restrictions on linear and angular speeds, linear acceleration, and discreteness of animation. The first phase of the development is complete and cases must now be considered for when aircraft are passing by, directing aircraft to and from a parking position, avoiding moving aircraft, different states of service and interruptions, etc.

An important and challenging feature of DCS: Supercarrier has been the development of night operations. Over the past year, we have been working on several aspects that will soon be released to Open Beta. These include new deck crew animations that utilize the new skeletal animation system, new animations that are specific to night operations and the inclusion of light wands. This will make deck operations at night much easier and more realistic.
For the aircraft, deck crew and objects on the “roof” at night, we have improved lighting and shadows based on the deck and tower lights. We continue working on this feature to enhance performance and frame rates. Please note that deck shadows will be an option that you will need to switch on in the graphic options.
On final approach, you’ll now need to contend with the “burble” effect. This disturbed air flow coming off the back of the carrier results in a brief partial loss of lift as you close in. This can make things much more of a challenge if you are unprepared. We continue to tweak this effect and you can expect the first iteration shortly.

Recently, DCS: F-14 Tomcat received an impressive update and overhaul to the autopilot and associated aircraft control systems. This has been a massive undertaking and will have a significant impact on your flying. Our aim is to provide you with the system as it would function “under the hood” in the real aircraft. This will generate the same effects that the real F-14 Autopilot would exhibit in varying flight conditions.
The Tomcat’s development continues with improvement of various systems and the addition of some final features currently missing from the module. This all means the Tomcat will more accurately reflect the functionality and limitations of the real aircraft. If you missed it, please read more here (https://forum.dcs.world/topic/295151-dcs-f-14-patch-overview-new-autopilot-mp-seat-switching/).
