View Full Version : Howard Aero Hangar

I'm putting this together to give anyone who wants it a place to hangar their collection of Howard Aircraft. It is done in a style similar to that of the Hangar Dee Howard had in San Antonio. The opening measures 30'H x 110'W x 162'D. Large enough to hangar 2 C-47's or any number of other aircraft.

This will be a single scenery object that you can place anywhere you want.

Just to be a bit more specific. . ."each opening" meets the measurements I mentioned. . .just in case someone thought that was the "entire" opening size. Ya never know, JS

More to be done, but at least now there's color.

That is looking amazing! I'll have to get some help in placing the object in the scenery....something I've not tried before. I'm a bit late to the party.:mixed-smiley-010:

Work is complete, I'm just doing a test placement at one of my airports to see how it works (FSX and P3D_V4.4).

Like Sundog said, and then...

Looks fantastic, Ed. Looking forward to parking a few of my Howard 500s in it, along with Uncle Milton's beautiful Howard 350!

Thank you for this excellent hanger.

Reminds me of the personal hanger Bill Lyon included in his fantastic payware Waco YMF-5 for FS2002, which I still have. (Need to dig that out and see if it will work inP3Dv4.)

Really, really nice! Like the way it is surrounded around the back with those very good looking trees.

I found a place for it in my North Texas Regional scenery. I had a bare spot at the end of Rwy 17 where the Alert Hangar was during my days at Perrin AFB. Perfect fit and it allows a direct taxi to and take off from 17. . .no turns no stopping.

Had a few texture problems and ended up retexturing the entire lot. Done now and here are some shots as it's positioned (finally) at North Texas Regional (previously Grayson County).

Ed, are you going to share the whole modified North Texas Regional with the hangar? I for one would really enjoy having a plug-and-play scenery with your hangar! Thanks either way. :)

My original thought was to make the hangar, by itself, a scenery object that one could place wherever they wished. Looking through the volumes of stuff I've uploaded here I can't see that I ever released North Texas Regional (it was the second airport I completed that had custom buildings and satellite imagery . . .Sherman Municipal was the first). The hangar itself can be released very easily (probably by tomorrow evening). The airport might take a bit longer as I need to be sure everything is contained in the correct folders before zipping everything up. That could be done by Saturday some time.

I can paint planes but am indebted to folks like you for the scenery.
Looking forward to both, Ed.

Love the Gooney in the back of the hangar. Is it and Lear and Cub AI or are they bgl's?

They're just objects expat. I'm having a problem with MCX right now. When I try to minimize the drawcalls it's kicking out an "unhandled exception" error message. I've never gotten that before when using MCX and I've used it for years. Posted the specifics over at FSDevelopers and just waiting to see what might be causing it. Til then I can't get the hangar converted.

While I'm waiting to see if Arno knows what is causing the error message, here are a few shots of what North Texas Regional actually looks like:

Hi Ed,

Which software are you using to do this? I really have to figure this out so I can make my local airport look somewhat presentable.

Thanks,

Ken

Several, actually. I use Sketchup for building the custom objects, MCX to convert the 3D model to a bgl scenery object, Instant Scenery3 to actually place the objects in the Sim, ADE for all the basic airport structure (runways, taxiways, ramps, etc). I also use SceneryBuilderX to find suitable satellite images and to do any seasonal ground textures, night textures and so on.

It's a very under-used Airport for it's size actually. What you see parked out there is about all you'd see on a daily basis, give or take a few. Back in the day the area where the 172's are parked had lines of T-33's. . .the main ramp was row after row of F-102's and the smaller ramp farther up had Transient T-37's from Sheppard AFB. The main hangars are still the original hangars as is the Control Tower albeit with several face lifts over the years and the area on the west side of the runways was the Engine Test Pad (No Hush House). As I mentioned in a previous post at the very north end where I placed the Howard Aero Hangar was the location for the Alert Hangar. It housed two "loaded" F-102s (assigned to North American Air Defense Command) along with the Crew Chiefs and Pilots. Quite a busy place back in the 50's and 60's.

Ed, if released separately, would the Howard hanger be something that could be used with Airport Design Editor? I've played around with it a bit on a couple of fictional airports. That hanger would look great on the banks of Reelfoot Lake with some float/seaplane ramps. I need someplace out of the weather to work on the Sikorskys.

The answer would be yes you can, however I have never used ADE for object placement so I can't tell you how it needs to be installed in order to work.

I guess when it's released, some experimenting might be in order.
