View Full Version : A new project, to keep things fun :)

I wasn't going to post about this one, but then I thought, "what the hell?"

After 18 months on the Northrop birds, having learned a hell of a lot and made a lot of mistakes along the way, I wanted to do something a little bit more "fun" for a while. One of the recent joys of flight sim has been the introduction of Virtual Reality, which has transformed flight sim in so many ways. I have a trusty Oculus Rift on my desk here, and as a real-life PPL I can tell you that it's incredibly realistic in FSX and P3D ( especially P3D ). But VR isn't just about flight sim, it can allow us to see the impossible, to experience things that as children were beyond the scope of anything we thought we could ever see.

So, this one's for the 7 year old me, and all the 7 year olds who would have gone batty for the chance to experience this in VR... If you don't know what cockpit this is, you never lived :adoration:

Fantastic Millenium Falcon cockpit shot!
Beautiful, just beautiful!

Sadly, the VR stuff doesn't work for me. You need 2 eyes for it to give a 3D impression. I only have one left. Gave up the other to a horse, on my motorcycle, back in Yuma. What he was doing on my bike, I have no idea. :biggrin-new:
Ok, dumb joke, I know. :indecisiveness:

Still, looking forward to the Falcon!

But will it do the Kessel run in 14 (splutter) 12 parsecs?? Never understood that, it’s like saying only 5 weeks between here and New York...

DC1973
August 23rd, 2018, 23:22
She will indeed do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs! :)

The project is another learning one for me in which I want to develop the skills to apply effects and sounds, as these are a bit unique to the Falcon. It's also to develop scenery, as it's gonna come with a small airport called Mos Eisley...

Planned effects include those big glowing engines, sound effects within the spaceship ( yes, you'll be able to walk about in it ) and special animations in the cockpit where we would normally have standard gauges etc. This, essentially, will include Han Solo's gold dice hanging from the upper cockpit.

The RF-8G is also in development - I have all my drawings and measurements, just having a break from serious modelling to play with this little fun project. I don't imagine it taking more than 3 months as I already have the exterior model well underway... :)

DC1973

LOL! Yeah, that would spook the astro's on board the ISS, not as much as a wandering Star Destroyer though! :devilish:

I'm thinking about a Bespin scenery ( Cloud City from The Empire Strikes Back ) as an addition, which would look fab hovering at 10,000 ft among the clouds, but for now it's just the Falcon and the Mos Eisley Docking Bay 94.

I'm working on a couple of "top secret" commercial projects that could transform flight sim in general, really thinking out of the box, and using these various freeware projects as learning curves for the various tasks of design within the sim ( modelling, texturing, effects, sound, scenery and so on ) to bring those skills into the commercial stuff. The more fun I can make that process, the better, as it's a lot to learn...

Cloud City, that would be impressive. Would it be possible to get it in a stationary position...?

It would be a scenery object so yes, it would hover among the clouds quite easily for reliving those The Empire Strikes Back moments :)

Not sure how far I'll take all of this as it's not strictly flight sim stuff, but it is a lot of fun and a nice break before tackling the Crusader.

The Force is strong with this one :) Landing claws and ramp animated, and the FDE is now in the capable hands of Pam Brooker. Going to continue working on this one in the background of more serious projects. VC looks good, although I had to alter the seating positions as the ones in the film meant that you couldn't see a thing out of the cockpit. Otherwise, things are proceeding precisely as I have forseen.... :)

Beatr with me. This will take a while to get right.. Blasting out of Mos Eisley, setting down on Bespin, or avoiding tie fighters along a desert floor all all very different modes of flight and i want to get them all right :)..
I took it out for a get acquainted flight today and I will say that having ninety feet of spacecraft to your left is very strange. So is landing when your cockpit is forty five feet off the center of the runway..
My goals are:
848 knots in atmosphere
118000 ft ceiling
90* vectored thrust for those really tight turns, takeoff, hovering, and landing..
It'll be a fun ride :)

It's an FSX / P3D only model I'm afraid. I'd happily let someone else convert it to FS9 once it's complete but I'm too busy to cater for all platforms, so there won't be an FS9 or X-Plane version, sorry.

Thanks....

A bit slow on this one as I'm also working on my first commercial flight sim product at the moment. Don't worry though, I'm soon to set some time aside to finish off the Falcon and get it released - it's mostly just texturing work and some VC modelling / animations. Following projects will be the RF-8G Crusader and then the Sepecat Jaguar, both probably for release in 2019. Crusader probably freeware, Jaguar probably payware but at a low cost.

Tough to squeeze everything in at the moment as my writing life is very busy and I'm also working on a commercial scenery project. I can't wait to sit in that virtual cockpit using a VR headset ! :applause:

A side question: if I understood correctly, you have or you are modelling a good part of the interior of the aircraft, right ?
Do you think you could harden the ground inside the aircraft and the opening bridge as well ?
In P3Dv3 and v4, it would be nice to be able to climb into the aircraft and walk to the cockpit using the avatar mode.

Hi Daube,

Yes, I'm modelling the interior at the moment. The walkways, boarding ramp and cockpit floor will all be assigned the "concrete" material setting which should ensure that they can be walked upon in the normal way. The inside of the Falcon will only be lightly detailed though as the model is designed for VR and thus poly / vertice counts are always on my mind. :)

Daube
October 15th, 2018, 04:00
Ah the polycount thing is a good remark indeed... :dizzy:

That being said, when we are in avatar mode, we go around the external model, not the interior (VC) one. Then you don't really need to put too much areas modeled in the VC model, then the impact on VR flight should not be too big... I hope :P

DC1973
October 18th, 2018, 01:25
It's amazing how different reality is from movie props. The Falcon's interior requires numerous ramps and steps in order for it to actually match up to the external model. Quite a difference from the movie prop interiors, which portray the interior as essentially level.

A quick shot of the interior section - the larger forward area will be the seating area seen in the movies. I'm not modelling anything more than what's visible in this shot though, as I need to move on from what's been a fun little project. Some general tidying up followed by the application of textures to the interior walls and floors and that should be it. Not seen here are the gun turret assemblies etc - they're all modelled, but hidden away in this shot to make it easier for me to work on the interior :)

Mostly standard stuff: fully animated VC with all required switches, animated undercarriage and boarding ramp. I'm using the project to test effects creation and also sound, so probably some custom stuff there but that's it really. Han and Chewie will also be there with conditional visibility settings ( battery on / off ) in the cockpit.

DC1973
October 19th, 2018, 05:44
Texturing the interior now, no "furniture" added yet and using generic Star Wars textures for the main area. You can see in the shots how the Falcon would have had "levels" were it built for real, in order to fit the external model. Will add seats, the famous holographic chess table and some other bits and bobs, then tidy up before doing all switches and controls in the main VC. Shots taken in Model Converter X for the sake of clarity.

Some more eye-candy from recent testing. It's proving strangely difficult to get the Falcon into a scenery BGL that will allow users to walk around a "parked" version, and as I'm now short of time I will instead be sticking with the basic Falcon with interior, and some Docking Bay 94 scenery to go with it. P3D v4 users will be able to use avatar mode to walk about, but entering the Falcon's interior will only it seems be possible with Eazy Dock, slew mode or using the VC controls to move about inside. Everything's there though, including R2-D2 :)

The thing is, in P3Dv4 when switching to avatar mode, you get the exterior model.
If you want to be able to go inside the plane, then the following requirements should be implemented:
- either you lower the "bridge" (main exit) before switching to avatar, or you make a clickable area on the exterior model to trigger it (this might be a P4Dv4 SDK feature only).
- the bridge has to be hard surface, like the elevators of the Nimitz by Javier for example
- the interior "corridor" and main room has to be modelled like you did in the VC, and be hard surface too.
- of course, when reaching the cockpit, we won't see any gauges, because that's the exterior model we're viewing at that point. But that's not a problem, at that point we can switch back from avatar to virtual cockpit mode to reach our seat. In that external model, you don't need to add so much details for the cockpit area, but you'll need the same details you added to the VC model for the rest of the interior, I guess.

I suppose it won't be possible to add to this external model as much details as you planned for your VC (holographic chess table etc...), but I don't know. That being said, your model is just looking awesome. You really exceeded my expectations with that level of details and texturing. Unbelievable ! :applause:

DC1973
October 23rd, 2018, 23:30
The thing is, in P3Dv4 when switching to avatar mode, you get the exterior model.

Hi Daube,

I'm using the same process as you described. The issue is with conversion, as some of my materials become oddly transparent when converted into a BGL - the undercarriage, ramp and interior are all invisible so you can't see anything. I'm not sure what would cause that as none of the materials or their Z-write settings uphold any kind of transparency but I'll have to check.

The interior and exterior models are actually going to be the same, barring glass textures which will of course be reversed on the interior model and Han and Chewie, who won't be in the VC. The whole thing is less than 60,000 polygons so performance is ace despite the details. Sometimes, the old-school modeling ways are the best ways... :)

as fun as it would be to peg the airspeed indicator at Mach 4.7, I think it would be rather cool to fly cross-country at airliner speeds in the Falcon, just with more maneuverability

Well, the FDE was going to be in Pam's capable hands, but as she's out of action for the time being I'm not certain. I know that Pam wanted to give the Falcon a Vmax of about 800 KIAS and a service ceiling of about 90,000ft or so. We'll have to wait and see.

I tinkered about with some suitably Star Wars-esque scenery today :)

Nice project, back to my childhood when i have tried to built a "Lego" Falcon!
I had the same idea with an older model from Bruce Fitzgerald! But now i saw this thread about a week ago and of course have stopped this project! On youtube there are some good FX sounds from the Falcon and also from Chewbacca! All the best for your project and "May the Schwartz be with you"!

Hi folks,

The Falcon is complete now, but I'm heavily involved in a scenery project and as such am wondering if anybody would like to do the sounds for this wonderful hunk of junk? I have a couple of WAVs with all the main Star Wars sounds on it, including the "comedy" engine-start failure sound, combustion, afterburner and cockpit beeps etc. Not much else required really, just someone with the knowledge to quickly put the sounds together for the finished package.

PM me or just reply here if you're interested :)

Just updating the thread to report that the Millennium Falcon has now been uploaded to the library here and, once cleared by the admins, should be available to download. Enjoy folks, and may The Force be with you, always... :encouragement:

The way the source book explained it was the Kessel Run was an interception of a retreating ship that had a head start the score being the distance needed to catch it. Example, a car with a half hour head start left my hometown and I caught with him by Milwaukee. I did the run in less than 90 miles. The Solo movie really strangled the logical source book description!:banghead:

Looking forward to this. It'll slot nicely next to Piglet's Naboo Fighter, Cylon Raider and Colonial Viper. (But there will probably be no bin of Wookie Kibble. One of Tim's signature additions to a cockpit as a dog lover!)

Yes, you did the run in less than 90 miles, but what color was the hat of train conductor pulling in to San Francisco as you caught the guy??
THAT is what the teacher was looking for.
Welcome to word problems :biggrin-new: :indecisiveness:

By the way, the correct answer is: Green, because aliens don't eat carrots when sitting on roofs!
I have no idea, I hate word problems :banghead:
