My great uncle flew P-38s out of New Guinea in WW2 and told my Dad that they just simply didn't get a fair shake in Europe because most pilots were not proficient with the twin-engine fighter...it really shined in the ground attack role.

Many, many years ago I encountered a P-38 pilot. He talked of in glowing terms, said it was the best fighter he ever flew. He was sad when he had to convert to the P-47, it was a sturdy aircraft, but did not fly like his beloved P-38.
