View Full Version : Shimmering in Normandy map - AA and AF in general

Hi there!

Although I had DCS Worls for some time I have not really invested any time on it. A friend recently convinced me to get the Spitfire and the Normandy map, as for air combat WWII is my favorite era. I am on v2.5.

I was deeply disappointed by the Normandy map as the ground and tree textures are shimmering badly. You can not really see this in screenshots although you can in some videos. I think these guys are not using mip maps at all and every single leaf and grass is shown and displayed even from a distance, causing this shimmering. I have already posted on ED forums looking for assistance.

So, I would like to ask people also here about possible graphics settings for AA and AF that could help. The issue is not that bad in Caucasus map, the only other map I have atm. I already have maxed in game AA and AF settings and have tried to inject MSAA and SGSS through NVidia inspector with no real difference. Would Reshade help? Are there any configurations available?

Any suggestions?

I have seen that it is possible to inject AA and AF settings externally from Nvidia inspector and they do work, only if one has deferred shading off. Even though this fixes the shimmering, it reduces the general graphic quality as the latest rendering techniques are not used.

Hi Dimus,

I will have a closer look at my actual settings tomorrow, as it's waaay past my bed time already. I do remember having graphics issues when I first installed the Normandy map, and as with after the update to, I think, V2.1, the main solution was to turn off deferred shaders and also to delete the shaders folder in your saved games folder. I do remember being disappointed with the look of Normandy when I first installed it, but the same went for Nevada. Now Nevada is looking great in my sim.

In fact I probably won't be much help as I haven't even flown the Normandy map since updating to 2.5, and reading on the DCS forums just now it seems as if deferred shading has been built in as a default, and is not able to be switched off. I'm not too sure on that though.

My current advice would be to delete your shaders folder and let new ones be built. You can find them here:

".....\Users\Admin\Saved Games\DCS\metashaders" or ".....\Users\Admin\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\metashaders2".

What I actually did was back up my entire folder(s) and then delete the original to let the whole folder be rebuilt. That was a suggestion from the forums, but I think the main idea was just to delete the shaders. With 2.1, after turning off deferred shading and rebuilding the shaders, performance was great and everything looked much better.

Jump on the DCS World forums and do some searching for more relevant info. Just search for "Normandy shimmering" or combinations of those words or similar and I'm sure you will find heaps of posts.

I will have a look at mine too.

I had a look at mine today. At first I found that I had my tree display distance set at 20 and that cause severe popping as I got closer to the ground. I turned that up to 100 so I could actually see the trees. I see some shimmering but it is not too bad for me. I mostly see it lower down when I am looking at a large forest of trees from an acute angle, but even then it is not too bad.

Here are the settings I am using if you want to give them a try.

Thanks! Deleting the shaders helped. Now I only see flickering in the shadows, that others also have, so it is not on my end. Much appreciated!

I am puzzled by the fact that your settings do not have at all the deferred shading option and also have SSAA, which does not exist in mine. Do you have 2.5 installed or another version?

Hi Dimus,
I had the same problem with the shadows, the only way to fix it was to turn the shadows down, I think to flat or something (I think there are three options). I hope that helps.
It's funny because I haven't had this problem with any of the other DCS terrain maps.

This was in DCS World 2.5 Open Beta, which is now at V2.5.2.17559, since just a few days ago when the last update was released.

Yeah, I am not a fan of the trees in the Normandy map. The first time I used the map I was not a fan. It reminded me of the IL2 Cliffs of Dover scenery, which I always thought looked too cartoonish. In Normandy they have made these super detailed trees where you can see every leaf, but from any distance they really look rubbish. They have improved a bit with settings changes, but they are still over detailed with not much benefit to the visuals.

Thanks guys, you've been very helpful. Over at ED forum I had zero answers.

The shadows issue is indeed Normandy specific. It is there even with flat shadows. Also tree shimmering never really goes away.
