I am very pleased to announce that the Lockheed Jetstar by James Goldman is alive and well. The project has been handed over to me after some quiet negotiations behind the scenes, and it is my honor and privilege to be managing the completion of this work.
At the moment the project is very far along, but much work needs to be done to update the model for FSX, P3D and P3Dv4.
Jim had put out the call for volunteers a couple of years ago, but real world considerations left the project in a holding pattern. As of this week we have tentatively assembled a team to handle the poly bending, paint work, flight dynamics and flight testing. I am still very much in need of a qualified gauge programmer for the VC which is fully modeled and very comprehensive.
This is going to be a long term project and will take some time to re-boot, but I thought this airplane should have a dedicated thread where we can share progress and updates with the community. The team, including the original developer, will be following the thread so we will welcome questions and comments from everyone. That said, let's everyone enjoy the process and watch this iconic corporate jet evolve with the help of this talented team.
Features:
Highly detailed exterior model with 4K textures, bump mapping and specular files
Full Virtual Cockpit with period correct gauges, navigation and avionics.
Fully detailed and animated cabin.
Stuffed Teddy Bear included at no additional cost.
PBR texturing throughout the aircraft interior.
Wheel chocks, service ladders and GSE
TFDi Design TrueGlass in the VC and cabin.
As per Jims request, this will be a freeware and gifted to the community as a gesture of thanks from Jim and his original team.
That said, let me get things started with a few initial shots of the airplane in its current state of development. I think the pictures speak for themselves. :encouragement:

Oh wow, that looks amazing. Seems like alot of work has already gone into this Jetstar. I am sure with your work on this too Gordon there is going to be one amazing aircraft when it is finished. Very kind of James Goldman to insist on this being offered to the community for free. I hope you will thank him from the whole community.

Lockheed built the Jetstar like an Anvil. It had an amazing presence on any ramp it parked on. I ground handled Kenny Rogers' and Wayne Newton's Jetstar's quite a bit way back when... The Pilots Loved the redundancy Lockheed engineered into it and they really enjoyed flying them. Its only shortcoming was that it required a small refinery to keep them in fuel. They joked the airplane was only as fast as the 'Quick-Turns' they got at the FBO's as they traversed the country.
Can't wait to see and fly this one in FlightSim. Thank You for taking this project on!!

I should expand a bit Matt.
The Jetstar project will be placed in the queue in order of priority. My ongoing projects including the B-26K, Brewster Buffalo and Tigercat are at the top of the queue and will be finalized prior to any release of the Jetstar.
The Jetstar is a longer term project, as I indicated above, but I wanted to launch the thread to see what the interest level is from the community and possible contributors. I am assembling the team at this stage and want to have everyone in the loop as the project begins to take shape.

There's definitely some lovely work on aluminum skin. The "Air Force 1/2" is a good example. There were a few that flew with the Presidential Seal, LBJ initiated the "one half" designation.
It was the pictures of that bird that convinced me to take this project, and I thought of you when I saw the gold, blue and white on metal. :encouragement:

Actually, it seems the conservative corporate "suits" world tended to 'all-over paint' but there were a few other than the polished VC-140B's that slipped thru:
https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/view/1098099
- and I have several biases in favour of CF-ETN as I ground-handled it in years gone by and my wife worked for Eatons.
https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/view/1458122
https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/view/1127955
and as late as 1985, at least one AFCS C-140 that went to the other extreme: https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/view/1028551
Wondering, Gordon, whether the discussion/planning has decided the possible options for the Jetstar I (JT-12, 'slipper' tanks) and 731/Jetstar II or will we have to squint and not see the differences? (My old eyes squint a lot anyway :untroubled: )

I'll run that by the original developer, but I doubt that he will object to my adding optional mods if and where appropriate to this air frame. Just the kind of input I am looking for.
BTW...love those USAF paints. The PK will be comprehensive for our "skinners".

I handled one of these at an FBO back in 2003. It was tour jet for country star Alan Jackson and one of the last, if not the last, private owned Jetstar still flying.
He sold it about a year later. Don't know where it wound up. She was gorgeous :-)

Gman, kudos for taking this beautiful bird on. I spent about six years with the ones in the 89th Andrews. The picture you have of 492 was used by the first family mostly. I remember several times Pat Nixon, Tricia and Julie would launch off towards Bloomingdales in New York on 492. Otherwise a high level cabinet member would use it. The sister ship, 493 was actually reserved for the Vice President (at the time Spiro T. Agnew, and later Nelson Rockefeller) travels to short distant areas whereby the 707 wasn't required. The difference between 493's paint was that the blue area was omitted and it was all white while sporting the Vice Presidential shield in lieu of the Presidential Seal.(It's more white than gold). The gold stripe was still present. The interior of 493 was very similar but had upgraded seats, appointments and upgraded sound deadening material. Many FSX VC-140 models omit the "cone" attached to the wing tanks in the aft end. That touch in the VC-140 distinguished them from other commercial units. I enjoyed riding in them as they were like a little sports car. It would accelerate quicker than the 707.
Thank you for bringing this bird to life. I've only seen a couple models for FSX, but they really don't do the bird justice. You do excellent work and I'm looking forward to its birth. Thank you and God bless.. Terry

Hi guys, let me reply to a request to Gordon, I do not have any objection with the development of other variations to the Jetstar. A lot of work needs to be done such as, different nacelles, slightly different tail, different fuel tanks and especially developing different panels for specific variations. However, it is ultimately left up to poor Gordon and all of you good souls.
I do want to take a moment to clarify something rather trivial. This project should in no way be linked or referred to as of FSD or the other members. I am the only polygon developer that brought the JSII to fruition and the only one that decided to give the source file for further development as a freeware community project. This is done to show my gratitude to all of you.
During this development process, I will try to contribute as much as I can, but I am dealing with end of life issues with a family member and my own health issues.
Last but not least, the picture shown below is of the actual JSII used for the model shown above.

Jim, Gordon, et al - you have no idea how thrilled this new project has made me.
Hands down my favourite business jet of all time, and having thoroughly enjoyed the Stone model back in the FS2000 days, a fresh FSX model is literally the stuff of dreams. And the teddy bear is a bonus (showed my young daughters the renderings, and now they're hooked! LOL).
Being an incurably addicted Jetstar fanatic, I've read the comments about bare metal paints and had to point out that in addition to the obvious VIP guises, the Jetstar wore some bare schemes in her lesser known role in the USAF Air Force Communications Service ....

More some folks cup of tea than mine, but I figured some would like to see these.
Of course, what I'm hoping for is a NASA scheme ....

... but I'll eagerly eat up anything this great team puts together.
Thanks again, and looking forward to the eventual updates (appreciate that it's still very early stages).

I feel for Gordon, he has more problems with his systems either being hacked or programs going wonky on him than most people I know. . .but he's also working a lot of very (what I would call) Hi-Tech projects that require a well tuned system. I'm sure the Jetstar is getting his attention, but he's been through some things recently that have probably slowed his ability to work on anything on a regular basis.

Thanks Ed, that was very kind.
The Jetstar is safe and sound on my backup storage, pretty much the same as you see in here. I have been able to fly it in FSX and P3D, I'm also looking at a V4 compatible model.
Ed hit the nail on the head. I have experienced my share of setbacks, currently sitting on a broken system and pulling together the resources to build the new one. Until then I am on my wife's backup '09 MacBook 13" for comms...and that's about it.
For a dyed in the wool workaholic, it's not easy to sit in solitary for weeks on end when I have so much in development. That cannot be helped, but rest assured...this project is in the queue for when I am back up to full song.

The Jetstar is indeed in development. Jim was kind enough to re-send his source files to me, which allows me re-boot this project...although from scratch.
At this stage I have a flying model in FSX and P3D including V.4 PBR. I am currently working on developing the panel and bringing the gauges/switches live. I lost all of my hand painted gauge faces and gauge resources when I lost my data, so a rebuild of everything will be necessary. That is taking a bit of time, due to the complexity of the VC in a four engine 60's era jet. Bear with me gentlemen, I lost some very expensive software, much of which is no longer supported resulting in the need to purchase...again...the current versions. The VC is not quite ready for prime time, so no shots there...yet.
The original model was forwarded to me in Gmax format. I used a "bridge" to export those files out to a usable 3D Studio mesh which required an extensive re orientation of pivot points and some mods to animations. Most of the animations translated relatively well, but the more complex animations like landing gear and air stair required a complete re-do. VC animations translated remarkably well, requiring only a re-assignment of functions and mouse triggers to the various controls, knobs and switches. Jim provided the syntax mods for the modeldef files, so that made life easier by a bunch. It pays to work with a pro.
The model is shown in a white lighting study skin here. At this stage I can begin adding details to the normal mapping, focusing mainly on accurate flush riveting, panel lines and skin stress. The PBR engine is extremely efficient at rendering subtle lighting variations, generating lovely highlights on panel height variations and rivet dimples. I've got some raw video of the airplane in flight and will do a short study video soon. The video really captures the live light in motion, showing off the PBR skins in a way that screen caps simply cannot.
The cabin modeling is absolutely magnificent, so I think this may be a perfect opportunity to take the interior into either Quixel or Substance Painter and document the process of rendering a full interior using those utilities. I can detail how to add complex ambient shadowing, PBR materials and detailed normal mapping in the process. Good opportunity to do some tutorial videos here.
I'm currently adding the ambient occlusion shadowing to the VC and cabin. This requires much re-mapping of parts and texture sheets. Bear in mind that the original model was configured to accommodate 32bit only with low poly counts and limited resources for rendering today's HD textures. I am expanding the model to take advantage of the resources we have available to us currently, resulting in what you see here...a 4K, light interactive model. At this stage of development the model has translated beautifully from its original format to 3D Studio and 64bit simulators. Here are a few shots of the PBR model in Prepar3Dv4.
Quite a lovely airplane to fly as well.

I spent 7 years with the SAM fleet @ADW in the 70's when they had the Jetstar and if there's anything I might can assist, please don't hesitate to contact me. My more important comment is that I'm very pleased that you have regained your eagerness to jump back into the development pool. No one would blame you for harboring bitter thoughts. You are an extremely gifted developer and the FS community is blessed to have you as a member. I also "thirdly" the notion that should you travel the recover route, I will stand in line and contribute up to $100 for your hard drive salvation and recovery. This in itself is not much, but I'm confident that line I'm standing in is long, indeed. God bless.... welcome back...... Terry

Time for a small update.
I'm working on the VC and instruments at the moment, but real world house/carpentry takes priority over developing for the duration of the summer.
That said, I've been refining the exterior including PBR skins. Don't worry FSX fans, the model will translate nicely to earlier P3D and FSX. It's amazing to me that a model designed so many years ago has translated so seamlessly into our current generation simulators.

The Buffalo was lost when Microsoft wiped out my work archives. I do have the published beta model, but the entire model will need to be re-built inside and out along with my other WIP aircraft. That's a ton of work and will take a while. So far I have restored two of my aircraft since the data loss. The Jetstar was undertaken basically from scratch, and is at the top of the priority pile. Everyone should thank Jim Goldman for jumping right in and re-sending me the mesh and data I needed to re-build this project. :encouragement::encouragement:

Yes, trivialities aside, a huge thanks to you, Jim, and whomever has been helping for their efforts. Every freeware project is a labour of love to be appreciated, and my particular affinity for this model aside, the efforts that go into them really need to be recognized and appreciated publicly. That it's a personal favourite is just an extra treat.
I think it's also worth mentioning, alluding to an issue that came up in another thread regarding supported sim platforms, it's cool that you're committing to developing versions for both FSX and P3D sims. Through all my FSX years, I appreciated the almost exclusive FS9-oriented Calclassic offerings, and adapted them as best as I could, since there was a dearth of native FSX aircraft and scenery of that particular period. Similarly, even though I've moved on to P3D, I still appreciate what FSX nuggets can be found that can be made to in P3D. The point being for us later adopters, it's appreciated that you've taken a combined/gradual development stream.
Clearly it'd be easier to focus on one or the other, but you're going to please a lot of folks this way. It's a different calculus for a payware product, obviously, but in this case, an additional reason for all of us who use the various named sims to be extra grateful to be able to enjoy it being optimized accordingly.
Thanks again!!

No worries Moses, I'm glad you asked.
Luckily, all of my published beta models just happened to be on a cloud server, and in the hands of a few friends when the database was lost. I was able to retrieve the .mdl and .dds files from those sources. The .mdl files are useless in 3D Studio, but Arno's tool allows them to be exported in an old 3DS file format that preserves the mesh. The .dds files can be converted to bitmaps, although hundreds of comprehensive layered Photoshop master files were a complete loss.
Basically I can import the mesh into Studio in a format that remembers the UVW mapping, so the bitmap files can be used to create new master libraries. The mesh is a jumble of axis points and no animations, so all of that work needs to be re-done for every animated part. I've re-built the B-26K and F7F Tigercat completely, including additions and improvements to both. The Abrams and Buffalo are awaiting restoration as well as my DH Hornet, Sea Hornet and a few others. I started with the Jetstar because I had committed to that project prior to losing the data and most of my software. I honor my commitments and Jim was right there when I asked for help along with the Special Kay restoration team who have provided me with open access to all of their data and experience. These two projects occupy my development time which typically starts around 03:00 and run about six hours, seven days a week. The rest of my time is devoted to my house restoration and rebuilding my research archives.
IMO
(comment removed by Gman)
I continue this work because if I don't have my hands in it I will lose the skill sets and fall behind in the development curve. I have no intention of allowing that to happen...thus the Jetstar and K Invader.
Thanks friends.

There was a comment above that appeared to view my data loss as a "trivial" matter. For me, this event altered the course of my life. I had an entire product line representing over 50,000 man hours invested in that body of work, which was intended to provide for my retirement. I would challenge anyone on this forum to invest that much sacrifice and energy into an education or business to refer to it as trivial when the work is destroyed, with no recourse or remedy to recover.
I continue this work because if I don't have my hands in it I will lose the skill sets and fall behind in the development curve. I have no intention of allowing that to happen...thus the Jetstar and K Invader.
Occasionally I will vent my anger and share the more personal side of my recent experience. I don't intend any malice and I truly appreciate everyone's support.
Thanks friends.
GMan,
I believe the comment to which you refer is mine. The triviality in question was my earlier question from my daughter. Not your catastrohpic data loss. It was intended as a shift in conversation, but I understand given that I quoted you, you could assume I meant all of your comment was a triviality.
I'd hope that read in context, it would be clear that I indeed appreciated your work, with all the attendant sacrifice and roadblocks you've had to overcome.
I apologize for any accidental miscommunication on my part - but know that I never have, nor would, see the data loss of that kind as in any way inconsequential.
My hope is that's clear.

Yeah, the VC-140 is a gorgeous, all right.
Interesting that a surprising number of airlines used them also. TWA, Eastern, Iraqi, Kuwait are the ones that come to mind, maybe others. I believe they were multi-engine trainers for their respective airlines' 4-engined DC-8/707 platforms, though I could be wrong. Likely saw some crew repositioning and/or executive travel use.
She looks good in those carrier liveries too, not surprisingly.

When I get the model to the Alpha stage, I'll have a comprehensive PK assembled for everyone to use for liveries. The existing UVW mapping was created to accommodate space/memory limitations in FS9. The FSX model I release will be set up to work comfortably within FSX/P3D2 and 3 parameters. The PBR model will be set up for V4 and later which involves an entirely different work flow relating to UVW mapping and PBR materials. Basically two different models for different simulation platforms. The PBR model will be a great opportunity for skinners to learn the ins and outs of PBR painting. The PBR PK will be set up for simplicity of use and include a tutorial.

She is very much in the rough with the exterior modeling underway, but still using Jim's original interiors. The VC is not ready for the show yet, so the video is shot with the original and some borrowed gauges. More later on the interior work.

They can restore them, or they can make them into sad things. I hope that there are people that make them into happy things. I am not a millenial, I am an Army brat, and I am over 40. I enjoyed working on aircraft 62-4197 during my 9 years in Special Air Missions at Andrews AFB. It was probably one of the most reliable and easy to maintain aircraft I ever worked on. The radar and navigation systems were all the best available, military and commercial. I loved that plane, along with everyone who maintained it, and those who flew it. That's why it pisses me off to see it like that. So, I agree to disagree.

Update:
Work is progressing steadily on the project. The FSX and P3Dv4.5 PBR versions are side by side projects and require some different treatments, but it is more easily done in tandem rather than separately. With things being as they are globally, I'm balancing my time between projects in development and the rather unpleasant aspects of the world outside my space.
As of this time I'm updating and expanding the VC model and texturing to be current and more efficient. The original model was economized for earlier simulators, so I can expand the model to take advantage of improvements post authorship. The P3Dv4.5 model will be expanded even more to take advantage of the 64bit platform. Instrumentation is another big task, but it's moving steadily along.
I'll post up pics and vid as I bring the model up to speed. :encouragement:

Thanks for your interest in KBIH. This scenery was unfortunately destroyed in my data disaster a year ago. I was able to retrieve the published Alpha version, but all of the support files, modeling, geodata and bitmap art were destroyed. I am in the process of recovering what I can, but all of my scenery will need to be rebuilt from scratch. At this stage I am focusing on the aircraft modeling that was lost, so scenery is farther down the priority list.
This recovery effort is an ongoing process, but will take quite some time to gather together a library of workable data worthy of the work I had done before the data was destroyed.
I do appreciate your asking. :encouragement:

Hi Gordon,
Just wondering if you have had any time to work on this promising looking project or have any more screenshots to tease us with.
Thanks

I just did a detailed project update here:

Not sure about anything MSFS yet. Once the sim is released I'll be looking under the hood.

You're not alone amongst the many of us looking forward to this one. However, it is said that all good things come to those who wait. This is a BIG project that Gman has taken on that will, in the end, I'm sure be well worth the wait. I'm sure he'll update us when he has something significant to share.
