The PT-17, Kaydet, N2S. I don't think we'll be adding an airport but that could change

Man, they gave one of these away a few years back at EAA. Too bad (or perhaps luckily) I didn't have the winning ticket. Yours will be cheaper per flight hour anyway! (Funny this popped up as I was tooling around in the Mystery Ship this morning!)

It will include the 450 Pratt and 300 Lycoming, just not sure yet whether the release will be one huge package or multiple smaller ones like we did with the Great Lakes. We will be developing the N2S on floats and A crop duster.

@ Spad - It might be a reference to a German WWII pilot (can't remember which one) who made the disparaging comparison of the Stearman to their Bucker Jungmann trainers - said the big clumsy Stearman flew like a grand piano compared to the nimble Jungmann
It might have been Udet or Rall who said it - after the war and after he'd had a chance to fly the Boeing

While the VC continues to be developed the exterior of the PT-17 is complete. This is the clean version a slightly distressed livery is being developed. We've come to the decision that the Naval variant will be modeled as the PT-13D - N2S-2 with the Lycoming R-680-17. Here is the PT-17 in FSX

Another must buy for me. I have every flight sim Stearman I can find. Stearmans have a special place in my heart. My dad put over 5000 hours on them during his life as an ag pilot. Sometimes I think half my wasted youth was spent sitting on the top wing holding the gas nozzle, letting the air from the idling engine cool me off a little from the hot Arkansas summers. From the photos it looks like the new model has a slightly more rounded fuselage than others I've seen, this one seems to capture the shape I remember. Thanks for continuing to produce these great Golden Age aircraft.

Looking forward to your release. I also started with Dave's in FS9 and my good fs buddy who is now flying with the angels used to do multiplayer together in FSX in them all over North Carolina low and slow. Great job! I did a WASP repaint of it from photos and shared it online in AVSIM with his permission but it got lost somehow.

Note: If you want to see the Navy's Primary Flight Training movies in the Stearman you can purchase the complete set with manuals from Zeno's Warbirds. Also used to find them on utube as well as a few contemporary ones. I have the complete set and enjoy watching them. How I learned how to fly it back when. Here is the link for the POH in pdf:

Now THAT sounds very intriguing. I'm guessing this is a simulation of the early hand-cranked inertia starters? Guess we'll find out soon enough!

+1 !! :encouragement:

But Heywoood's piccie above shows that the helmet texture is mirrored, making it stand out quite a bit from the otherwise lovely detailed aft cockpit. (IMHO of course.. )

Please,GAS, would it be too much to ask if something might still be done about that ? For your convenience i have rounded up 4 photos of the back of the famous AN-H-15 cloth helmet. The top right is of a H-15 with modern earphones. Good chance such a combo might be used to fly an open cockpit today. July 7th, 2018, 04:16
I have been following this one with much interest, as you may guess ;-). I've been hoping someone would make a good Stearman for the sim for quite a while now.

Along those lines, it occurs to me I may be qualified if you're looking for beta testers. I've got probably around 1,000 hours flying and teaching in a 1941 PT-17 with the stock 220hp Continental. I last flew her 10 years ago before moving out of the midwest, but I can close my eyes now and remember every feel, every smell, every sound of both pits, how she felt in every phase of flight, the way the mains would whisper into the grass on a perfectly timed wheel landing... You get the idea. She remains my first true love in aviation. Every pair of jeans I owned during that time had oil stains, from the oil that would crawl up the tach cable and drip on my ankle in the front pit. ;-)

So if I can offer any help, feel free to let me know. I'm not trying to scam anything for free; she'll be a day one purchase for me either way.

Eureka! Thanks all for the willingness to help me crack the animation nut. I stumbled upon the solution on the FS Developer forum. The red herring was Tick_18 itself. FSX does not use that tag. The correct tag is Ambient. Once used the animation works flawlessly. Now to smooth it out with additional keyframes.

That function is simulated in the model. Selecting the camera view in the view menu places the eye point at the crew station starting equipment panel. A mouse hot point activates that crank which when clicked triggers the animation ans sound file of the inertia started flywheel. At the of the animation the user clicks the start lever starting the engine.

We have one in flying condition at Tatoi, my aeroclub's base, but it rarely flies. It is part of a private collection of warbirds belonging to a wealthy shipowning and media owning family.

Here's yours truly in front of it, when I got the chance to sneak into their hangar a few years back. You can see the Jungmeister and the Jungmann in the background:

The modeling of the PT-13 variant is complete. Product testing continues. Flight dynamics are under review and modification with the assistance of a Stearman instructor pilot with over 1000 hours in type. If all goes according to plan, the military Stearman package could be ready for release toward the end of August with a "Super Stearman" package out late 3rd quarter.

I see that all variants completed to date use 1930s era cockpits. Is it possible to add a bit of modern flavor to some of them by installing full-sized radio and transponder in the VC, the way it was made in Anthony Lynch's Tiger Moth?

Our models are presented as they would have been pre, during, and immediately after WW2. There is no evidence in the pilot operating handbooks and cockpit diagrams that avionics were installed. Accommodations have been made to access the standard 2D hand held radio and GPS using SimCons located in the aft data/map case. Modeled radios and such are likely to be presented in a future release of the "Super Stearman" variants to follow later this year after this release.

... I think everyone is going to be very surprised if not utterly blown away by the GAS Stearman and your 'maximum effort' on this pivotal
WWII trainer. No one to date has modeled the PT-13 for FSX and no one has done the PT-17 to this degree of fidelity.

I'm pretty sure you're right :applause:.

It is a awesome to see the attention being put into these different variants of the Stearman. The civilian modified version looks gorgeous - I love the raised turtle deck behind the rear cockpit and spats. That model will be a great base for a number of repaints of other Stearmans flying today in similar configuration as well.

One Stearman I'm quite familiar with is the N2S-1 that was restored a few years back by AirCorps Aviation for Paul Ehlen/Wings of the North and is one of five known surviving that was flown by President George Bush Sr. when he was undergoing his initial pilot training in the Minnesota winter of 1942/43, based at NAS Minneapolis. It was restored with absolute accuracy in every detail, including no avionics and no way of starting the aircraft except from the outside/original method - hand crank, primer and starter-engage on the front cowl. The aircraft was operated that way for about a year, only using a hand held radio to communicate with atc. After a year went by, and the aircraft had won awards, they installed some basic modern radios hidden inside the data case in the aft cockpit. I believe it still remains one of the few/only Stearmans flying today that still requires another person on the outside to start it (most have been configured now to have an electric starter with a switch in the cockpit), unless that has since changed as well.

Here are a few photos I took a few years back of that aircraft:

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5511/30482668576_db60098f5b_b.jpg

Note the black tape masking the fuel pressure section of the three-in-one engine gauge, which is a detail that was copied from the original factory production which calls for that to be done - since the fuel pressure part of the instrument wasn't used. In this photo, other than the modern GPS mount, everything is stock accurate to original N2S-1 production (I also have photos of all of the different stencils all over the airframe, if interested - for instance, every strut has a unique number stenciled on it, corresponding to the same numbers stenciled on the wings and fuselage where those struts mount, and every fabric surface has a stencil with fabric specifications and dates when applied).

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5610/30482668166_3bedab2d51_b.jpg

Here you can see the limited Becker avionics installed inside the data case, so when closed, it otherwise looks completely stock.

Flying from London to Sydney through a multitude of airspaces is not a trivial task, I'd say. I was thinking about flying cross-Australia in a Stearman. Looks like I'll have to live with 2D popups for transponder and the like.

Exactly, if you have the ability to create pop-ups then you can have anything you want. The current aircraft being done by GAS are being created as they should be "old style".

That's a clever way to hide the radios. Our model's data case is animated to open revealing the SimCons for the pop ups. I might try throwing a stack in it. My concern is that the radio faces may be hard to see but I'll give it a go. No GPS though. Got to leave that as 2D. We've also modeled the a/c to require a "two" person start as an option. There is a VC cockpit view that places the eye point at the starter equipment panel and allows the user to prime, wind the inertia starter, and pull the starter clutch release. Before doing so one will have to set mags to on, master battery to on and mixture rich. Helps to set the parking brake too. :biggrin-new:

That sounds like a fantastic plan. I can see both sides of the coin here - with the desire to keep true to the vintage original avionics (or lack thereof), while still making them somewhat equipped for operations in modern airspace with a simple comm & transponder in the VC. Agreed with the 'no GPS' policy. My brain is already mush enough, and I like to use DR with vintage planes in FS in an attempt to keep my gray matter from drying out from disuse. I just imagine these planes operating in a '60s-early '90s timeframe - still equipped with radios, but before GPS became the norm.

Regarding the radios in the data case - perhaps just a flat VC callout, so users can insert the avionics of their choice via the panel.cfg - or none at all? Either way this package will be a winner.

For reference-sake, the Becker com and transponder avionics heads installed in the Stearman I show/described are the exact same as are also in the FSX default glider. Many of the significantly authentic WWII aircraft restorations over the past several years (including the Flying Heritage Collection B-25, Lewis Air Legends' A-20, the P-51D "Upupa Epops", P-51C "Lope's Hope 3rd", P-51D "Sierra Sue II", the Flying Heritage Collection's Fw-190A, the Flying Heritage Collection's P-47, the P-47 "Dottie Mae", etc...) have this same set of avionics installed, as they are extremely basic and small, don't detract at all from the completely authentic nature of the cockpit (usually mounted in hiding spots or to removable brackets that are easy to take out), and are just enough to get by with and still be able to fly cross-country in today's ATC environments. I believe contained to the right of the com and transponder heads is just an avionics on/off switch and two mic/headset jacks (there may be a couple hard-to-see circuit breaker switches to the left of the com head).

I use TrackIR and the effort to see the radios for me would be about the same as in the actual cockpit. More realism :-) Thanks for no GPS.

This keeps getting better and better. Patiently but anxiously waiting for it to appear. Like said it is possible to create 2D popups to have the equipment YOU would put in YOUR own Real life personal Stearman. I have done that in FS Panel Studio in a lot of aircraft to "tweak" them to my own personal preferences.

Here is the solution. It's a hybrid combination of 3D modeling and 2D projections. The avionics master switch is also in the case. The lid of the case is animated so with one click the whole shebang can be hidden from view, thus restoring the authentic quality of the aircraft of that era. I retained the pop-up option for the "visually challenged" among up us :biggrin-new:. Its slaved to the modeled part so the settings can be manipulated from either location. Also since there is no radio in the front cockpit, if sharing in multiplayer, the front occupant can manage the comm from the pop-up

I flew the PT-17 U.S. Army Version this afternoon. Here is my PIREP for my first test flight of this beautiful aircraft beta version. Flight planned in Skyvector VFR KSUT Cape Fear Jetport NC to KCRE Grand Strand Airport SC. A 33 minute flight direct but I did a few detours for a few maneuvers. Initial altitude filed 3,500 feet AGL Altimeter 30.14 set before takeoff at 18:30Z. Fuel used 7.6 gallons.

A really smooth takeoff. Very easy to get the nose down and aircraft level taking off so that runway is clearly visible ahead. Aircraft responds really well to stick pressure, not much required. My trim was a little sensitive for level flight but that was my "heavy finger" and I learned quickly that it just takes a "wee bit o' trim" for her to level out at 2200 RPMs.

Climbed to 5,000 and did a couple of aileron rolls. Then straight up and cut the throttle for a deliberate stall. Stalled out at about 38 knots and then the nose fell straight over and straight down picked up 100 knots airspeed without any trouble. Full throttle and slight back pressure being constantly applied and back to level flight without any problems.

resumed a heading of 240 Mag and flew on to Grand Strand. Tower cleared us right away for a left approach to Runway 05. In real life there were would be traffic for KMYR Myrtle Beach International which is very busy. Sectional requires us to check in with KMYR Approach because we were within 20 miles of the airport but that was not possible in FSX ATC which locked us into KCRE. I didn't have traffic on today anyway. Didn't want any interference with the test flight. Here's some screen shots I took of this really beautiful aircraft. Thanks Paul and the team for all your hard work.

I have another thread here for the 1943 version of Daniel Field I created from the current KDNL so that my PT13D had a home field that was not modern. Tonight I created some company for the Stearman with an AI Flight plan using Dave Eckhardt's Stearman as AI in the same paint as my GAS Beta. Here are some shots. It was so cool watching them taxi to the active and takeoff. We're waiting our turn. I am going to fly with them tomorrow but since its 01:03 here I think I will call it a night after I post these.

We are patiently waiting for the PT-13 sound file to finish. Immersive Audio has it and I'm hoping for an update today or tomorrow. Once it is in hand we'll publish a release date. Now the upside to this delay there has been time for added development. I've received many pm's about placing a GPS in the cockpit especially since we've placed a configuration manager in the model. I think all know how I feel about modern avionics in a vintage cockpit but since we can hide all that stuff, I could find a rational reason not to make a GPS an option when configuring the model. So.................................

I know it will be appreciated by many, and it's a great option to have, and that looks like a good place to put it, and I admit that I may even peak at it once in a while, so... Nice job!

But it's still heresy ;)

Just spoke with the sound designer for the PT-13. He promises completion by Friday. I'd like to release it by Labor Day. That's the plan.

And here's a couple volcanoes silhouetted on the dawn horizon, split by a Stearman tail. Because, why not?

Mount Hood at 7 o'clock, Mount St. Helens at 5 o'clock.
