Looking under the hull of most virtual ships there's a helluva lot more water sloshing around the empty hull than Lizzie!

:untroubled:

I love the UK press - 'new warship leak shock horror!'....I've yet to come across any ship which doesn't suffer a propeller shaft seal leak from time to time. It's not the easiest to seal and maintain a turning steel shaft that exits the hull directly into the ocean.

200 litres and hour? My garden pond pump can handle more than that!!

I agree with you completely.

In most vessels leakage around the stern gland is part of the shaft cooling system.there are not many dry glands.

I believe the Queen Elizabeth has a pneumatic gland shaft seal.

Cheers Chris
PS As far as the medias knowledge of ships the most annoying thing to me is the use of their expression the HMS Whatever.

HMS stands for her majesty's ship so you cannot say "The her majesty's ship ----

Lemme guess..... Daily Mail? The great spreader of misinformation, negativity and downright lies.

January 11th, 2018, 11:06
There's a reason it's now known as the Daily Fail!

It used to be a respectable newspaper 25+ years ago and I was a regular reader of it's Sunday edition (The Mail on Sunday) when I still lived in the UK, mostly for the usually informative colour supplement and the comics section.

It has gone drastically down-hill over the years and now resides firmly among the 'gutter press'.

Chris, you might be referring to the old wood shaft bearings. They employed staves of a very hard wood called lignum vitae which supported the tail shaft between the propeller and the engine room. Sea water, as a lubricant, was allowed to flow past the gland into a bilge-well in the engine room, from where it was pumped overboard. Lignum vitae bearings were largely replaced by oil-filled white metal stern bearings in the 1970s and 80s. The seal at each end of the tail shaft was effected by sets of O-rings, with a small oil header tank in the engine room which maintained the oil pressure and so prevented the ingress of seawater. I was an engineer on a ship that had this conversion work done in dry-dock in Cardiff in 1976, and it was interesting to be involved in it.

Just lately, I see that a return to seawater lubricated bearings is contemplated, though it is unclear to me whether lignum vitae would once again be utilised. I'd like to see details of HMS Queen Elizabeth's arrangements.

And you're right...it's HMS, not the HMS :O)

Paul here is the type of gland I have been referring to.

https://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/pages/sternglands.aspx

I was the manager of a well known yacht manufacturer and indeed have had many yachts and boats myself.Well being called Drake and born in Plymouth you would expect it.

Hope the link helps explain to all who are interested in stern glands.

PS The stern glands in the Queen Elizabeth are pneumatic. That is like an innertube made of very tough material and tightened onto the shaft by being pumped up with air

January 17th, 2018, 14:25
Thanks for the link Chris. I remember stuffing boxes on valves and shafts but not on stern tubes of that vintage. Maybe it was the diameter of the shafts of large ships, and the consequent impracticality of stuffing boxes... I don't know - its been 30 years. The packing was manufactured by a company called Beldams, covering everything from ice-cold seawater to superheated steam !

Plymouth, eh ? I was at the School of Maritime Studies on Portland Square for two years. The buildings are all still there, including the Planetarium. After that I was up on Tyneside for another year.

And of course, you make the very valid point - how can any rational human being NOT be interested in stern glands ?? ;O)

In my experience in journalism and media "Ship Experts" are as ill-informed and arrogant as so called "Aviation Experts" who are rolled out and put on our screens after an air accident.

As I recall, when the design was confirmed, it was announced that the carrier would be based at Plymouth, not Pompey, which caused a small uproar. The print media quickly explained that this was because the new design " did not have sufficient draught to navigate the Solent " :banghead:

That looks great CIMOGT - but I must say that when flying - addon Gauges should be kept to minimum size (like the Gauge for QE as it is now - the reason is; When you're flying you need to be able to see out the cockpit window.
That Gauge looks really good but me - and others here - would like something small, discrete, and easy to navigate quickly; the chances are we'll be on final, in the rain, at night, in a hideous cross wind, etc; (in typical Sim Outhouse Pilot style)

But you go with what feels right and we'll Beta it - you've got immense talent and it's great work - really great work - that you're doing. SALUTE.

The aircraft configuration is composed of chinook and f-35, I do not add more because not all users have high performance machines and these additions enlarge the overall size of the model and its consumption of fps, I try to keep it as low as possible and increasing the compatibility with the greatest number of users.

Just a quick suggestion: if you are using my F-35 textures for static aircrafts, I would suggest use the payware ones as reference... they look much closer to the real F-35 ;-)
Also, it would be cool to have Ambient Occlusion baked in the textures, if at all possible.

Yes, I agree Dino. Apart from the bit about ambient occlusion - which I don't have a clue what it is - something to do with light reflected sheen perhaps?

I would just say that the F-35 canopy colour seems a little wrong - too yellow. It's only a small thing but it does affect the immersion - and because the rest of it is so good I only mention because of that.

Keep up the good work CIMOGT - let us know when we can Beta the Prince.

Increase the brightness of the lights on deck and add some more detail to the F-35 and change the texture of the cockpit windows

SALUTE.

Jim

I will add the two gauges, the user select wich one will be used

This boat looks great, CIMOGT. I'll wait for it to be published though. I am not much of a beta tester, I fear...

Just a quick note, if I may. The really nice thing about carrier ops, is the wind is always a headwind. If there is a consistent crosswind, the Bridge Crew is asleep at the wheel, or dead, maybe. The boat is always maintained on a course that keeps the winds down the angle deck.
Of course, that IS at the flight deck's elevation. The winds at 300' may be different. Unlikely, but possible.
Have fun all!
Pat☺

This version is finished, I thank all the beta testers who were very helpful to detect and correct errors in the models, as well as the ideas to add some elements, especially to Ganter, at the end these are the animations included

CARRIERS

RADARS. (ambient)
ELEVATORS. (controled by gauge)*
ELEVATORS GATES. (controled by gauge)*
HANGAR DECK.**
HANGAR DOORS.(controled by gauge)*
PERIMETER LIGHTS.(controled by gauge)
RUNWAY LIGHTS.(controled by gauge)
ISLAND LIGHTS.(controled by gauge)
ISLAND REFLECTORS.(controled by gauge)
POSITIONING LIGHTS.(controled by gauge)
RABBIT LIGHTS.(controled by gauge)
INFO SCREEN ON DECK, 3 IN THE QUEEN ELIZABETH AND 4 IN THE PRINCE OF WALES.
INFO SCREEN ON HANGAR.
F-35 OND DECK.(controled by gauge)
AH-64 AND CH-47 ON DECK.(controled by gauge)
SHOOTER.
BLAST SHIELD.
TRAFFIC LIGHTS.
ANIMATED SAR HELICOPTER.(controled by gauge)
BEDFORD ARRAY LIGHTING SYSTEM. (only basic lights, no voices)

TYPE 45 FRIGATES

RADARS. (ambient)
HANGAR DOORS.(controled by gauge)
HELIPORT LIGHTS.(controled by gauge)
POSITIONING LIGHTS.(controled by gauge)
REFLECTORS LIGHTS.(controled by gauge)

They were modeled:

HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH.
HMS PRINCE OF WALES
HMS DUNCAN (TYPE 45 FRIGATE)
HMS DRAGON (TYPE 45 FRIGATE)

The Frigates have less detail to keep the fps as low as possible and can include with the carriers, for aicarrier the following formations were tested

CARRIER HMS PRINCE OF WALES
CARRIER HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH
CARRIER HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH AND 2 FRIGATES TYPE 45
CARRIER HMS PRINCE OF WALES AND 2 FRIGATES TYPE TYPE 45
CARRIER HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH AND 4 FRIGATES
CARRIER HMS PRINCE OF WALES AND 4 FRIGETES
CARRIER HMS PRINCE OF WALES AND HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH

The consumption of fps can be maintained at an acceptable level without pauses even with both aircraft carriers in formation, the models are made for P3D v3 but i compile a different mdl for FSX use

* In FSX only animation, in P3D v3 it is functional.
**Only for the P3D v3 version

Nice work! You're a lot faster than me getting stuff done!!

Minor point the Type 45 is classed as a Destroyer not a Frigate, in the RN Destroyers are primarily Anti-Air Warfare and Frigates are primarily Anti-Submarine Warfare. It's an increasingly pedantic distinction though to be fair.
