View Full Version : Got me a Boomerang!
It's a perfectly delightful plane to fly. As long as I don't have to chase Zeros... These Aeroplane Heaven planes are quite nice indeed. Great VCs.
All I need now is a Wirraway and I will be happy :D

That they did and a fine one it is; at least in CFS 2. I haven't flown it in FS 9.

That Boomerang is one ugly aircraft. I don’t think it will win any beauty contest!

That it is. That's why I like it! It wasn't that good a fighter either. I like the old almost forgotten planes from early WWII that weren't that good, but were all that was available at the time. Buffaloes, Vindicators (a.k.a. "wind-indicators" :D)

Hey Paul, ya gonna fly that Boomerang in the next practice?
I haven't flown it in quite a while. I might have to take it out of the hanger and fly the rust off. Did that with the Bf 108 Taifun & Sikorsky S-43 tonite.

The Boomerang is actually a quite agile aeroplane that would in maneouvre terms would give most contemporaries a real run for their money. Its downside is the lack of horsepower and Altitude performance. However, they were used extensively throughout the war in PNG and Borneo in the Army cooperation role/ground attack.
As for the AH Boomerang, it gets my thumbs up for a teriffic reproduction, particularly accurate are the sounds (external, dunno what it sounds like when flying it).
Cute little plane. Looks sort of like a distant cousin of the radial-engined Grumman cats.

Yup. Very responsive in the roll axis. Almost "twitchy", but that may be only because I'm not used to it. It seems "unstable" in the roll. But that makes a good fighter plane. If the flight model is accurate, then everything you have said is correct. Very maneuverable and agile down low, but no high altitude performance. Easy to land, very responsive at slow speed, with roll control very snappy even over the threshhold. Great fun. I agree the AH model is nice to look at, inside and out. Can't comment on the sounds, since I don't know what the real ship sounded like, but in the sim it sounds nice!

As soon as I figure out how to attach a couple of 310 gallon drop tanks to his baby, I'll be all over the race with this little hot rod! :D

Somebody mentioned the Buffalo! The CFS2 1% Buf works very well in FS9 and is quite a delightfull flier as well. A very manuverable beast, mostly lacking in performance after being loaded down with more and more 'stuff'. Not a design suitable for that sort of additional growth around the waistline. The Fnn's made very good use of them!

Rgr Fliger... I love the Brewster F2A. And all those old planes from the 1930s, that didn't quite measure up to WW-II standards. "Many planes heading yours" Battle of Midway, June 1942. F2A's against the Combined Fleet A6Ms. Not a good day for the Marine F2A squadron at Midway. They fought with what they had.

Which is where the origin of "Henderson Field" on Guadalcanal came from. The Finn's made use of it as an angles fighter, which worked in that environment, but against the 'angles fighters angles fighter'?
One of it's defects that caused problems in Fleet ops was the landing gear, that and Brewster's general lack of first rate management in aircraft production.
Fun to fly, perhaps less so to fight. The flew with what they had!
Here in Australia at the moment, a land of true grit!

The only thing the flight model does not really emulate well is the ground handling characterisitics in my view, from seeing the real thing a few times the pilot is kept rather "busy" with the rudder ;). At the Avalon Airshow down the road from me in March "Suzy Q" i noticed did a go around (have it on video) after she started to bounce after a reasonably firm touchdown in a cross-wind, so i dare say the oleo struts are quite firm.
Paul, i'll extract some sound of "Suzy Q" off some video footage i have of it & post it up in this thread a bit later.
Baz mentioned once there'd be a fix for the Boomerang's offset VC eyepoint/viewpoint angle, although he just about had me convinced the Boomerang attracted crosswinds. *grin*

I'll take a look at the old girl again. Got some new tricks to put in so after the P47s and Corsairs, we'll do a little upgrade for people which'll fix the offset and reawaken the love affair...
The owner of Suzie Q gave the model the thumbs up at a recent show and a local P51D driver took her up for a test and reckoned she was pretty close so I think the FM's just about there. The Boomerang was pretty agile and at certain heights could out manouevre the Spit MkV. She just couldn't mix it with the Zeros...

LOL!!! That was really funny. The Wirraway is actually quite fantastic .. got a lot of enjoyment from her when she was released.
Reminds me of the story of a Wirraway that was shot down by a P-39 driver who thought it was a zero.

Oh by the way, the Boomer sounds are authentic. Sampled off one of Matt's displays at a show. The whistle is distinctive of the Boomerang and is caused by the airflow over the gunports.:engel016:

Paul, it's my pleasure to do that!
There are currently 2 Boomerangs airworthy here, just "up the road" at Wangaratta there is another one about 50% restored (for sale apparently), this one is last i heard a rolling frame & is sitting along side 3 P-40's, 2 + P-39's and 2 Douglas Boston's awaiting airworthy restoration.

Dunno Baz, but it'd have to be behind the 1st (obvious i suppose), but i'd reckon it'd have to be a kiddy seat that would have a severe weight restriction. By the way that aircraft has been advertised in the back of Classic Wings magazine for sometime alongside all the ex-Air World aircraft
