I notice that for P3D v4 a separate download is required. I may be investing in v4, so do I buy the FsX version first and then if and when, repurchase for v4?

Hi Roger. The short answer is 'yes.' However, if the FSX version is installed into Prepar3D v4 it will work, but you will be missing functionality with the Carvair (modern version) and Firefighter models, be missing a few sounds, and will need to do a couple of other things such as backing up some gauges. If you can do without the Firefighter and modern Carvair, there shouldn't be too many problems. Nothing guaranteed, of course, as everything was tested separately.

Is it actually released Mike? It will let me put it into the cart, but shows a zero cost at the check out point.

It is indeed released, and sales have been going through, but I did have one other person with a problem as well. Perhaps it's with the company that operates the store (Fastspring)? If it continues, let me know and I'll get in touch with them.

Edit: Just tested PayPal and credit cards, and all appear to be working (from this end, at least). Will keep my eyes open, however.

Thanks Mike, I am not sure why, but it does not list a cost when put into the cart, and gives an error as a result. I do have a service inquiry into their support as I have never had an issue with fastspring before.

EDIT: Finally sorted, thanks Mike

Same for me too, Mike. Used two different browsers and different pay methods. No joy. Ordering the P3D V4 if that makes a difference on the issue.

Thanks, Steve. We'll have to see what FastSpring has to say. I've been through the setup from this end and all seems in order. I just went through a simulated order for both packages, twice, the first time all went well, and the second it was the FSX version that returned a $0.00. And as mentioned, some orders from others are going through without a problem.

Just got my order to go through with paypal, I think it's FastSpring having some issues.

Thank you Mike (and Bernt) for bringing such detailed and accurate reproductions of the DC-4/C-54 line of aircraft to FSX/P3D!

But it converts to about NZ$62 , so unfortunately it will have to wait a while before I purchase it.

This one was worth the wait. It is a great rendition of this aeroplane. The level of detail and the texture quality, inside and out is simply outstanding. All my previous versions (good as they were) have now been honourably retired. I can find no faults with this model. It performs and handles like a DC-4, the systems all work, switches etc all do what they should and after many many hours in the JBK DC-4 this one fitted like a glove. I give it 10 out of 10. I wish to acknowledge the excellence of the modelling work, the textures, the coding and the way it all comes together in a simple first class package. It installed flawlessly into FSXA. The choices of variants from the DC-4, C-54 and the Carvair is simply astonishing, each as good as the other. For the money it is unbelievably good value.

To the creator a big thank you for your work. I can see many many hours of sim pleasure with the definitive FSX DC-4/C-54.

I have already spent a good half hour doing just circuits in this, enjoyed every minute of it.

If your a piston engine affecianado, heaven on a stick. I will let you all find out how good the VC is from the Captain, to Co-pilot, Radio Operator and Navigator positions and equipment all beautifully created and present.

Awesome news! That's really freaky. I hadn't heard any news of this but I was just wondering about this aircraft and it's release about an hour ago.

Thanks Mike for your great efforts. I am so happy to see so many variants included, especially the Carvair. That was a great surprise.

As always, I am super impressed with the level of accuracy and attention to detail of Flight Replicas aircraft, down to the numerous production and post-production differences throughout the aircraft from one variant to another. If you jump back and forth between just the C-54A and B alone, there are all kinds of differences throughout the exteriors and cockpits, down to differences between early and late style instruments, instrument layouts, switches, radios/antennas and even the oxygen regulators are different, with the early and later styles - not to mention jumping back and forth between the original production-era examples and the post-production/more modern era examples, with all of the differences in layouts, hardware, paint finishes, upholstery, etc. In particular, I really like the overhead windows added in the water bomber variant, which are great when it comes to making tight high-banking turns. The detail in the engines is also incredible, as is how the entire forward cabin is modeled/textured in such great detail (and accuracy), including the navigator and radio operator stations. At one time, I could never have imagined having such detailed and complete versions of these aircraft for flight sim - it is fantastic!

Some repaint ideas when the paintkit becomes available - the Blue Angels R5D 50868 from the 1960's, and the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation's restored/currently flying C-54 "Spirit of Freedom" (after its most recent refinish/repaint).

Sorry , stand corrected . When you get my age things like this start happening on a regular basis . Need to get back to the Museum of the Air Force . They opened a new hanger last year that now houses all of the Presidential aircraft . Before they were across the field on part of Wright Patterson AFB . You're right , " Sacred Cow " is quite the name .

You should find the wireframe maps as the very bottom-most layer of the principle wing texture (eg. NS_Wing_L.psd)

Apart from the paints to come (and hoped for) after a couple of days of exploration I am astonished by the variety of the model types that came as standard with this package, something for everyone, literally. Think Mike has set a gold standard here too. I think I am most impressed by how frame friendly this one is, compared to some more recent single engine types, this one runs as smooth as butter on my low end system.

One question, are weather radars capable of being integrated into a couple of these ?, I note the displays there, and that it could be done with the North Star.

With the release of the Carvair memories come back. About 50 years ago it was a very familiair sound when the Carvairs departed over the city of Delft near Rotterdam, heading for Southend.
Already made several trips over the Northsea and Channel with this new superb product. (thanks Mike :adoration:) Even on my (very)old system from 2008 -win 7-32 - NVIDA GeForce 8800 GT it runs smooth.

Just started to play with the paint kit... below a first result, which still need some adjustments in the alpha layer.
The logo I have made some years ago, initially for the FS2004 Jens Kristensen Carvair in progress, which was never released.

I'm having a few problems with my eyes at the moment Need new glasses) and can't spend much time painting this wonderful aircraft. Airlines of NSW had one DC-4, VH-INJ also known as "Big Julie" (information given to me by a friend who flew DC-3s and F-27s for ANSW). Also of note is the Royal Mail emblem is in the blue band aft of the passenger door.

Below are a few photos of INJ.

Tonight I was able to have my first look at this wonderful aircraft and install the repaints so far provided. I thought that Mike had excelled with the North Star but he has really nailed it with this model. I was impressed that both an Ansett Carvair and the ANA DC-4 had also been included. One aircraft however one aircraft that was conspicuous by its absence was the Ice Pilots Buffalo DC-4. I am not complaining as I know that some repainter will produce a repaint.

To help you out: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=buffalo+airways+dc+4&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjd2davvpDXAhUEUbwKHV5MCRoQsAQILg&biw=1523&bih=754. Looking through that page I did not realise just how many schemes Buffalo had used.

ANA aircraft VH-ANA that is included in the package was tragically lost on the 26th of June 1950 when it crashed on the property "Betty Bow" 19km NW of York, Western Australia. It was on a flight from Perth's Guildford airport to Adelaide with the loss of 29 lives, 24 passengers and five crew. The DC-4 will be uploaded to the third-party vendors in a week or so. The aircraft are available only at Flight Replicas for the first week or two in case changes need to be made.

Indeed Pat. I would love to see some Buffalo paints too. I'm sure it won't be too long before someone has a crack at a few of them. We now have really great quality payware aircraft covering almost the entire Buffalo fleet (as far as I can tell). I don't think there is an Electra yet (could be wrong) although there is pretty good freeware of that aircraft available.

I notice there are a few different schemes for the DC-4 cargo and tanker aircraft too.

Cheers,

I have really been looking forward to this one. Had my first test flight last night. Fabulous.

I would really like to see the USAF livery shown in this 1956 youtube clip of C-54 landing in Japan. That is the same time that my dad was flying them into Tachikawa AFB.

Couple of small issues - I am getting a MP difference on the No 2 engine only of the Firebomber model, in the order of about 4-6" higher than the other engines, it does adjust back using the pedestal throttle control, found this at all power settings, not sure is this a built in quirk for authenticity or something else. I find the cowl flap levers a little sticky using the mouse but fine if the keyboard. I note that the main and standby radio frequencies cannot be tuned in advance except via the pop up, not a problem though. No other issues across the range of variants which is excellent. Still have not tried the Carvair yet.

I do get a little phasing on the sound, so the ambient or air noise mixes with the engine tones at speed and high rpm in the VC mode but outside view the sounds are great. FWIW.

Also noticed this (sounds like a FS2004 soundset in FSX), to be honest the sound is a bit disappointing (okey, very spoiled by the A2A and the C-47).

For the rest very very happy with the big choice of models and VC's. Just discovered that even the Carvair has 2 different VC and even more model files!!

Those different sounds may (may!) be because of something we tried. As you may know, Bernt has many hundreds of hours in 4-prop aircraft, and to him the default VC prop sounds in FSX at high RPM's were always incorrect as per real life - in every FSX aircraft he's ever tried - specifically regarding when the props were adjusted. Some sounds should not diminish. We came up with this, which is supposedly as accurate as sound.cfg's will allow. However, if you are unhappy with this, it's easy take it out (I think) - just remove every .wav file that ends with a - (DC4_rpm03-2.wav, for example). There are 2 of these sound files per engine. This shouldn't effect anything else.

This is the trouble with sounds its like graphics and fps, there is a variety of difference between us humans both in the way we perceive sound, colour and motion, so what is ok to one is not ok to the other. I am in the Bernt camp I have spent a lot of time in real multi-engined pistons, some where the cockpit noise level reached 150db, as a result my ears are permanently damaged (industrial deafness) so I may not be hearing what Bernt or yourself hear in exactly the same way. Thanks for the response.

TiAr - nice work, a honour to have the former Presidential aircraft in my hangar on such a great model. FWIW this completes my AirForce One or Presidential aircraft collection from the DC-4 right through to the 747, and includes the AC560 used by Eisenhower, so I am grateful and thanks a lot, good work. Do I have a favourite, no, they were all great aircraft for their time, but the DC-4, Constellation and early 707 do have special place.

The Brooks Air Fuel N708Z could be nice for me.

There is a current information of this nice looking Skymaster out. Kevin Porter wrote on Jetphotos.com in August 2017: "Recently repossessed and auctioned as scrap by the City of Douglas. No word on the buyer, however the initial auction notice required the aircraft be removed by mid-August 2017." Source: https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/8678356

Just uploaded one more:

http://up.picr.de/30819146sg.jpg
This repaint shows DC-4-1009 ZU-ILI c/n 42984 in historical Swissair livery in 1997. Delivered 1946 to South African Airways as ZS-AUB, this bird was used later for South African Government as 6905. In summer of 1997 Swissair short leased this a/c from SAA-Historic flight to celebrate the anniversary of Swissairs 50 years transatlantic flights with sightseeing flights all over Europe. In that time ZS-AUB got new registration as ZU-ILI and temporally HB-ILI.

The first Swissair DC-4 flight to New York was routed from Geneva via Shannon, Ireland, and Stephenville, Newfoundland, on May 2, 1947, although it actually ended in Washington, D.C., due to fog at New York's La Guardia Airport. The total elapsed time was 20 hours and 55 minutes. Now 20 years later you can celebrate the anniversary of Swissairs 50 years transatlantic flight again.

Real ZU-ILI had a bigger radar nose, so R5D model is the best choice to use this repaint.

My first flight on an airplane was on a C-54 painted similar to this one from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska to McChord AFB, Washington in September 1953. This repaint shows ATL Carvair 9J-PAA of Phoebus Apollo of the year 2005. Was Douglas C-54E c/n 27314, ex JA6015, N88881, 44-9088. Converted to ATL-98 VH-INM c/n 27314/21. First flight in Southend as Carvair No.21 in 1968, was the final Carvair built. Became VH-INM of Ansett Transport Industries. In 1990 registered as N5459M for Air Cargo Hawaii, trading as Hawaii Pacific Air Inc, Honolulu. In 2002 Phoebus Apollo purchased this bird, registered 9J-PAA by Phoebus Apollo Aviation Zambia, Lusaka. Entered freight service between Johannesburg and Lusaka, delivering Exclusive cigarettes and carrying general cargo.

On 25.6.05 this Carvair was ferried from Johannesburg-Jan Smuts to Johannesburg-Rand. Probably its last flight. 9J-PAA still parked at Rand, reported that owner plans to make it airworthy. It was 2011. Until today in 2017, 9J-PAA is parked in Johannesburg-Rand with that funny scheme.

Mark, texture mapping on Carvair models are working well. In my opinion, no need to put a further hand on it. Wainting for your update with workin front cargo door in exterior models.

Thanks! I think the danish scheme looks very good on the C-54! It was quite a job to research all the decals associated with the rescue marking around windows and cuttable sections. The decals are in both english and danish and are different from all other c-54 rescue decals i have seen.

As you probably know so was the black painted walkways a bit different on the danish 54’ (longer and 3 sections among things), do you have any pictures of the top of the wing showing where the walkway ended and/or if it overlapped the dayglo?

This is a long worded request for a late 40's/early 50's repaint of PAA & United Air Lines.

About a month before Mike released his C-54/DC-4 I started the 1947 "Round the World" schedule, Flight #4, with PAA. This left New York and proceeded through Europe using a Connie (I used the A2A L049) until it arrived in Calcutta...whereby the passengers were transferred to a DC-4, after staying overnight, for the balance of the trip to KSFO. So now I have 44 passengers and a crew in Calcutta with no PAA DC-4 to get them out. Would really appreciate someone doing a PAA repaint for that era so I can get everyone home. Than I need the UAL repaint to get them from KSFO back home to New York (PAA was not authorized to fly passengers between these cities in 1947).

Thank you very much.

If I had to guess, it would be Hellenikon Airport (LGAT) before the east international terminal was built (between 1960 and 1969).

The old OA logo (with the iconic bird) was phased out around 1958-59 with the newer Olympic circles.

Telly, there was IMHO no Olympic Airways SX-BAG around. This should be SX-DAG which has this paint scheme in 1966, shortly before sold to Balair in January 1967 as HB-ILD. The second Olympic Airways, a C-54G SX-DAC, was also sold 1967, wearing at least this "modern" Olympic scheme.

Perhaps this could help.

Wow, thank you for taking the time to paint this bird!

And Thomas, you're absolutely right about the registration, it's supposed to be SX-DAG.
SX-BAG was a Douglas DC-3 (C-47) which had the reputation of being the first commercial aircraft to be hijacked in history (or so they say!).

Another little tidbit of information about Greek aircraft registration is the use of the third letter as to how many engines the aircraft had:
A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, D = 4 and so on (Examples would be SX-BAG as a DC-3, SX-DAG as a DC-4, SX-CBA as a Boeing 727-2xx)
This was used during the late fifties throughout the mid-70's but later abandoned, with a few cases which didn't follow this rule during the period.

Mike,

First of all congratulate on a marvellous package! Doing the RDAF paint I came across a small texture mapping issue for the engines:

A great deal of both USAF and other military users had a Propeller danger line decal painted on the inner engine cowling to show the propeller of the outboard engine. With the current mapping it is the same texture for both inner and outer cowling which makes this impossible to paint without getting the decal on both cowlings. Any change for a separate texture for inner/outer cowling for the military C-54s?

TiAr
November 8th, 2017, 10:44
JensOle,

you can only paint one engine, but this mapped all four. So I decided to left these things out. I am sure Matt thought the same with his great repaints...

That was the reason for asking Mike about it.

The model was so close to the limits of what I could compile that even 5-10 extra polygons or one extra 50kf animation was enough to stop things. As so few users had different paint schemes on the engine cowls, mapping these is one area that I chose to simplify.

Very nice repaints here.

Another is just uploaded in SOH lib:

http://up.picr.de/30936454sm.jpg

This repaint shows Douglas C-54G-DC N708Z of Brooks Fuel of 2015. Was build 1945 and delivered as 45-0614 to United States Army Air Force. In 1958 as 45614 to United States Coast Guard and 1962 with N708Z to US Atomic Energy Commision. In 2004, Brooks Fuel bought this plane and stored it first at Opa-Locka, Florida and later at KDQH Douglas Municipal Airport, Georgia. In 2017 N708Z was repossessed and auctioned as scrap by the City of Douglas. However the initial auction notice required the aircraft be removed by mid-August 2017.

Wow! So many great paints for this classic.

I just stumbled across an interesting web page describing the history of a nomad C-54. It was delivered new to the USAF as a C-54B-5-DO on May 30 1944 and went through many hands before being vandalised and scrapped (sadly) at Melton Airfield of all places. I don't remember seeing any trace a few years back when I was taking photos there so I guess it has been completely dismantled now.

If you look at 1:12, you'll see the water splash from the initial impact between the mine and the water hit the tail of the aircraft... It was a classic that happened to aircraft during the development of the real upkeep mine, as well.

My interest was in whether the aircraft was returned to flight after the incident? I presume it was?

Edit: That video - which appears only a tiny bit edited from the original programme - says that the aircraft was "mercifully undamaged" but I understood that they did actually find later that the HStab was, in fact, damaged by the impact.

Just watched this episode of Ice Pilots NWT last week, I don't recall them saying anything about the aircraft being damaged. However, the footage of the recreation that was shot with Buffalo and Arnie was used in multiple documentaries, some contain more footage and information than others. According to wikipedia, Dambusters: Building the Bouncing Bomb, Dambusters Fly Again and an episode of NOVA called Bombing Hitlers Dams all use that same footage. So while it might not have been mentioned in Ice Pilots, it may have in one of the other documentaries.

The various liveries will be uploaded within a few weeks, most likely on flightsim.com and SOH.

Many thanks Tim for the great Alaska Airlines textures :applause:

Now for something of a different nature ....

Because the original install is HUGE , what's the best way to reduce the original texture folder sizes (averaging 300+ Mb per texture) and have a shared common texture?

I've noted your Alaska texture folder is a fraction of the size of the original texture folders and it has a 'texture.cfg' .....

[fltsim]
fallback.1=..\texture.AA
fallback.2=..\..\..\..\Scenery\Global\texture
fallback.3=..\..\..\..\..\..\Scenery\Global\textur e

I've also installed 'Douglas C54G-DC Brooks Fuel N708Z' , and it also is a fraction of the size with a different number of dds files plus a shared texture.cfg, although slightly different wording from the Alaska one above.

Is it possible to have one common texture folder to cover all 6 aircraft?

And what's the best way to go about it?

Thanks,

Pete.

Two cents. It's easy to get the texture.cfg wrong, I did it myself many times. So did the ACES team for the default planes. That fallback.3 line copies their error, pointing exactly nowhere. Fallback.2 does point to an existing folder, but it's very unlikely that there is a useful a/c texture there. Then again, what is really needed, and what isn't there, is a fallback line pointing to ..\..\..\..\Texture because that's where the global environment maps reside that are normally needed for reflection effects (glass and chrome etc). Unless, of course, you are including custom environment maps in your own texture set.

Tim HH, nice work on the Pan American Airways (PAA) paint and very much appreciated. The older liveries were a lot more stylish than the new bland modern colours most airlines have adopted (To save money on repainting the aircraft really.

Your posting on page 3 was the main reason why I did the Eastern Air Lines repaint so I'm very happy to hear that you like it :)

I don't think that it is possible to have one common texture folder for all variants as they all have different virtual cockpits and textures. But you could create a shared texture folder for each variant. The easiest way would possibly be to move the VC textures into the new shared texture folder and adapt the texture.cfg accordingly.

Sorry for bringing up this 2 year old thread but I am wondering if anybody had painted any livery that was used in Berlin Airlift action please? If so, where can I find such repaints for Flight Replicas DC-4, please?

Thanks,
