*****Mini update from Wags****** "Hey everyone, I answer this everyday on FB and YT, but I wanted to provide a little update here as well regarding the next Hornet video (start up). Most of the primary systems we need for an authentic cold start have been completed like electrical, hydraulics, fuel, AMAD/ATS, engines, display groups, and most sounds are done. There are certainly areas though we still plan to improve like the IBIT, DDI/MPACD fonts, cockpit art, and some sounds.

The big item we are still working on, and thus this hold up, has been the caution and warning system. This is a very complex system for the Hornet and the team has now completed most of the coding logic. This week, the team will hook up the display and control of those notices.

Once that has basic functionality is in place, we can move on to the next episode.

Thanks.
***Also***
"One of the big elements to get the Hornet to the point we can do a comprehensive cold start has been the Built In Test (BIT) system. Although there is still some tuning to do and some of the BIT elements to complete, the general system is now completed and functional with several options including:
AUTO BIT
SELBIT and pressing BIT Group OSBs on the main BIT page
ALL for a selected BIT Group
Selecting individual items on a BIT Group using OSBs 1-5 and 11-15
This brings us one step closer to the next video"

For the Early Access version, we plan both TACAN and Waypoint steering. Attached you can see a work-in-progress of the TCN system up and running in the game. The guys are now busy with the Waypoint system of navigation.

Having a functional waypoint navigation system is another required aspect of the start up video. As I think many of you are starting to see, there are large number of elements that must first come together to create an authentic start up video"

"Although you’ll be starting the Hornet using battery power almost all the time, the ground power electrical bus panel will also functional. However, you’d only really use this during systems tests when you do not want to start up the jet. After requesting external electrical power from the ground crew, you will enable the main external electrical power switch. With external electrical power enabled, you can use the four ground power switches that each controls a separate group of systems/instruments. The control bus for each switch is listed on placard below the DISP button.

I’m discussing this now because I probably won’t touch on this during the Hornet Start Up video.

Work continues on the caution and advisory system."

There are already carriers available in DCS. You can place them in a mission with the Mission Editor, basically in the same way as you can place an aircraft.

***From DCS FB Page***”Today was a big step forward with the advisory and caution system in that we committed it into the rest of the Hornet simulation. Unlike yesteryears when such systems based on simple scripts, the system being created for our Hornet is all being based on all detail simulated sub-systems and all the correct display, clearing, priority logic. While being something that may appear from the outside as rather mundane and simple, it’s been far, far from it. With it now being “live” in the rest of the Hornet simulation, we can begin the process of debugging this complex system. At the same time, this a big step toward completing the sub-systems damage modeling.”

***Mini Update***

As much of the code team is busy working on the caution and advisory system (the last and toughest ones are always the worst), the art team has been working on the new stores for the Hornet. While there are many stores existing in DCS World that we can use, there are several that we are creating from scratch.
While not as interesting as a new bomb or missile, a new external fuel tank has been badly needed for the Hornet.

***Mini Update***
A well-known visual characteristic of the Hornet has always been the vaps down the length of the Leading Edge Extension (LEX) during hard maneuvering. As has been eluded to earlier, we’ve been working on a new effect to properly implement this in DCS World. Rather than a simple shape file, we’ve used a partical-based system to allow the vaps to be very dynamic and variable based on aircraft maneuvering and the humidity. Not only are vaps based on the AoA of the aircraft, the humidity level is also a huge factor. In addition this effect working along the LEX, it is also being used for over the wings when appropriate.

Attached is an early work in progress image of this effect.

In addition to the Hornet, we plan to apply this effect to other aircraft, and this tech has been passed to our 3rd parties to use for their aircraft.

Mini Update
There have been a lot of questions regarding what sensors and weapons will be available at the launch of the early access DCS: F/A-18C Hornet. This decision is based on balancing a great, first experience, while getting quickly into the hands of those prefer early access adoption. We realize that early access is not for everyone, but for many, it is. If you prefer a completed product, we ask that you wait for the final release. Take that time to monitor previews and early access reports to make an informed purchase.

We believe that starting with the more “simple” systems at early access roll-out allows a more shallow learning curve at the start. By then adding new systems gradually, it introduces the Hornet’s sensors and weapons in a more structured manner… much like what a real Hornet pilot goes through when learning the aircraft. This also allows us more time to fully develop the more complex systems in a way that delivers the most realistic experience possible.

Note that this is all very much subject to change for our mid-2000s F/A-18C USN Hornet.

Sensors:
A/A radar with RWS, STT, and ACM modes

***Mini Update***"It’s a small thing, but some of the art for the HUD camera control panel and the UFC has been cleaned up a bit. As these portions of the cockpit are often in your face, it’s pretty important to get these looking as good as possible.

Also, we have had to move the Mk-77 to the post-Early Access release list for weapons. Not only will the Mk-77 require a new object and napalm effect, but an all new warhead type needs to be created (quite different than HE and pen-aid warheads) and all units and objects will need to be updated to account for this all, new weapon type. As you might imagine, it's going to be a lot of work to support this.

***Mini Update***
"In case of a departure, the Hornet was provided a spin/departure recovery system that instructs the pilot on how to command the controls to exit a spin. However, this did not really help with a much more serious “falling leaf” departure... As the Hornet evolved, the Flight Control System (FCS) became advanced enough that the jet could automatically recover itself by simply taking hands off the controls and allow the jet to fly itself out of the departure. In fact, the spin recovery switch should not really be used in later F/A-18s.

However, to be complete, we plan to model this system. Here are some work-in-progress images of it in action.

It’s been a very long haul with the Caution and Advisory System that has entailed the simulation of many other systems that feed into it like electrical, fuel, hydraulic, navigation, mission computers, flight control system, engine, AMAD, TAWS, and others. However, we are getting pretty close now to have functions in place to create an authentic Hornet start up. Thanks for your patience on this."

***mini update*** "Let’s talk a little about sensors…

A key aspect of the Hornet early access release will be the air-to-air radar modes that consist of Range While Search (RWS), Single Target Track (STT), Latent Track While Scan (LTWS), and the Air Combat Maneuvering Mode of Boresight Acq (, Vertical Acq (VACQ), Wide Acq (WACQ), and Long Range Automatic Acq (AACQ). A lot of our efforts are now devoted to this.

Attached is an image just showing a symbol test. Several items are quite incorrect (it’s just a symbol test), so please don’t get too wrapped around the axle on this.

Once that is complete and the Early Access version of the Hornet has been released, we’ll be using the air-to-ground radar technology we’ve been developing over the past few years to create the A/G modes of the AN/APG-73 radar we are simulating. Our goal is to create the most realistic simulation of an A/G radar ever done for a game. This will be in addition to including the remaining A/A radar modes and functions.

Upon wrapping up the APG-73, we’ll move on to the ATFLIR, and at that time, develop a new and improved FLIR technology to provide the best and most realistic simulation of such a sensor.
You may also note in the image that we’ve been working on the lighting system for the IFEI. In fact, the panel was modified.

As for the Hornet start up video, we are just waiting on one critical item to be resolved with the caution and advisory system. The AV-8B will have the limelight to itself this weekend, but I hope to the Hornet start up video to you the week after… finally."

Outstanding Machines indeed! I love American muscle cars and bikes, especially the older machines such as the Goat. I bought the Hellcat Challenger as my military retirement gift to self because I absolutely loved the retro styling cues and modernized horsepower. She's not disappointed me yet in producing a smile every time I drive her. I also just added a Ducati X Diavel S to my bike stable livery. Though not American made, every bit still a beast of a bike.

I have actually been a huge fan of Matt Wagner for quite while, loving his earlier products, such as Janes FA-18 and seeing his involvement with DCS. Love that series too.

****Mini Update**** "As many of you know, we’ve had to push back the Hornet start up video much longer than we had originally hoped. This has primarily been due to getting most of the Caution and Advisories at start up correct. One of the more obvious start up elements is the ”deedle-deedle” and “flight controls, flight controls” audio at right engine start up. While it would be easy to simply script it at right engine start, we need to understand exactly what causes this and make sure we account for the factors that lead to it.

These audio elements in fact goes hand-in-hand with the Master Caution. Anytime a caution is triggered, the Master Caution light comes on the Master Caution Tone (“deedle-deele”) is heard. There are MANY items that can trigger a caution and this has been keeping the team busy the last couple of months. For a start-up, this is generally triggered by a Flight Control System (FCS) caution. There are several items that can lead to and FCS caution, but the one that we care about in this case is either a FLAP OFF or AIL OFF cautions. Either of these will in turn trip an FCS caution. An FCS caution in turns results in a “flight controls, flight controls” audio caution.

Unfortunately, despite having literally hundreds of Hornet manuals, there is no good information why these two FCS warnings manifest themselves at right engine start up. Through some of our great SMEs (Hornet pilots and ground crew), we now understand that these control surfaces can “droop” over time, once the aircraft shuts down (further than the FULL down position at shut down). When the aircraft starts up, the system sees this as an a flap or aileron failure and thus trips the caution. We are now in the process of updating the aircraft for accounting for control surface droop.

These would also be indicated on the FCS page and an FCS Reset and running a BIT would be required to clear them.

Anyhow, it’s these little details that we feel are important for the proper simulation of this aircraft, but it has resulted in additional development time. In the end, we think it will all be worth it and provide you the most authentic Hornet flight simulation for the PC.

***HORNET FAQ***

"DCS: F/A-18C Hornet FAQ
Updated on 4 December 2017

Q: When will the Hornet be released?
A: We will announce the Hornet’s Early Access release date at the same time it becomes available for Pre-Purchase (sorry, no more best-estimates). The Pre-Purchase date will depend on when on when we feel we have stable build of the Hornet that provides the key Early Access features of a PFM flight model; functional engine, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, radio, lighting, caution/advisory, flight control, emergency systems; and the sensor and weapon systems as detailed here:https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php...4&postcount=13 (https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3285514&postcount=13)

Q: What weapons and sensors will be included?
A: Please consult the detailed list here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php...4&postcount=13 (https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3285514&postcount=13)

Q: Will carrier operations be included?
A: Basic carrier operations will be available at Early Access launch, but they will first be reliant on the carrier operations based on what we have currently for the Su-33. During the Early Access period, more detailed and realistic carrier operations of Case I, II, and III will become available.

Q: What squadrons will be available?
A: At least initially, our focus is on US Navy Hornets. This applies to skins, sensors, and weapons.

Q: Will the Hornet be released with DCS World 2.5?
A: DCS World 2.5 will be available prior to the release of the Hornet.

Q: Prior to release, what’s the best way to get a head start learning this aircraft?
A: In addition to the videos we are providing, we suggest a careful read of the F/A-18 NATOPS. https://publicintelligence.net/u-s-n...light-manuals/ (https://publicintelligence.net/u-s-navy-f-18-natops-flight-manuals/)

Q: Can I become a Hornet beta tester?
A: Please see our post here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=50779

Q: Will the Hornet come with a new, highly-detailed Nimitz-class aircraft carrier with new features and functionality never seen before in DCS World?
A: These will be two separate modules, but we plan to provide a bundle deal that includes both. We currently plan a less-detailed version that will be a free part of DCS World.

Note: There is nothing else we can really say about the new carriers at this time.

Q: Will the Hornet release with a manual?
A: The Hornet will release with a Hornet Early Access Guide that will instruct you on how to fly and employ the aircraft. As new features and functions are added during the Early Access phase, the guide will be updated to reflect this.
Upon release of the final product, the full manual will be released.

Q: Will the Hornet be able to share datalink information with the A-10C?
A: Once we implement Link-16, this is something we will certainly explore using the A-10C gateway datalink capability. The A-10C uses SADL, not Link-16.

Q: Will the Hornet be able to communicate with the JTAC?
A: Yes, but this will come after the initial Early Access release.

Q: Will a cockpit-view pilot be provided?
A: Yes, but probably not for the initial Early Access release.

Q: Will nuclear weapons be available for the Hornet?
A: No

Q: Will there be an option for a Hornet with no pylons?
A: Yes, but probably not for Early Access release. That will come later."

***Mini Update***
As we continue working on the Hornet’s system needed for a proper cold start video, I’ve put together this little video that shows off the Hornet flying around the updated Caucasus map for DCS World 2.5.

We are at the point that we are satisfied with the caution and advisories for the startup video. They will not be 100% complete, but all the major indications are now in. Last week I wrote the voice over script and handed it over to a couple Hornet pilots to review. While they are pleased with it, they noticed a few missing items. There are several items like setting up the ZTOD and FLBIT that are not mentioned in the NATOPS checklist, but we want to include to be thorough.
Also, for the next video, we plan for it to be more extensive and include pre-flight, startup, taxi, and takeoff.

In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this video.

***Mini Update***
"Most of the current work on the Hornet is focused on the air-to-air radar, flight model and Flight Control System (FCS), and defensive systems.

- Range While Search (RWS) radar mode is functional and detecting targets. Functions like antenna elevation, bar, range, and azimuth setting are all functional. There is of course much work to still do on the A/A radar prior to Early Access release.

- The flight model and FCS are undergoing a lot of work to properly simulate both the Up and Away (UA) mode and the Pilot Assist (PA) modes. Both modes have a very different feel. PA mode is critical for landing when the flaps are down and the trim hat controls AoA.

- Initially we planned the ALR-69, ALE-39, and ALQ-126B due to available data. However, we now feel we can do a pretty accurate simulation of the ALE-47 and ALQ-165 systems. This will also involve an update to the cockpit to include the Integrated Countermeasures Control Panel (ICMCP).

- Additionally, work continues on the INS/WYPT system, A/G weapon HUD displays, the EW page, the Azimuth Indicator, additional caution and advisory messages, autopilot modes, improved display fonts, and a better effect for the display of HUD information.

On the art side, we continue to tune both the external model and the cockpit. Let’s see who can first spot the cockpit art change in the attached image.

Also, with the release of the Preflight, Startup, Taxi, and Takeoff video earlier this week, we got some great feedback to further increase the accuracy of our Hornet simulation.

Thanks and have a wonderful holiday!

"Time for a mini-update!

Most of the team has been on the Russian new year’s holiday the past 10 days, but work will resume in full force on Tuesday. We are in sprint mode now to bring the Early Access build of the Hornet to release status as soon as we can.

As mentioned before, much of the current work revolves around tuning the flight model / Flight Control System (FCS), weapon integration (SMS page, HUD, and objects), the air-to-air radar, the INS system to support waypoints, and whole lotta systems and sound tuning.

Once more weapons come online, we’ll be showing them off and their delivery modes. Our art team is also working on some new skins that we should be showing off soon. Today we have an image of LAU-61 rocket pods and ZUNI rockets for the Hornet.

For the next Hornet academic video, we’ll dive into the HUD, Upfront Controller (UFC), and Integrated Fuel and Engine Indicator (IFEI).

***Mini Update***.
When creating our F/A-18C Hornet, our goal has been to create the most accurate simulation of a LOT 20 Hornet possible. One area we ran into issues with though is the defensive systems. While we had great information on the ALR-67, ALE-39, and ALQ-162, we ran into a lot of trouble finding good data on the newer ALE-47 and ALQ-165 ASPJ systems. Because of that, we had to use the older defensive systems panel in the bottom center instrument panel.

After a lot of hunting, we’ve been able to put enough open source information together to create a rather accurate simulation of the ALE-47 and ALQ-165 system operations. The ALE-47 in particular provides a lot more capability in creating manual programs and the semi-automatic and automatic programs.

Attached, you can see the new Integrated Countermeasures Control Panel (ICMCP). As you will probably notice, this panel is rather spartan. This is because most of the functions have been moved to the EW DDI page.

Now that the team is back from holiday, work resumes on the Hornet. One of the big areas that you can see visible results is the EW page. Attached are a couple WIP images of the main display page and the manual (MAN) programing page.

I’ll do a full academic video on this later, but in a nutshell, the bypass mode allows single release of chaff and flare from the countermeasures dispense switch on the throttles and when in the ON mode, it can use semi-automatic (S/A), automatic (AUTO), and manual (MAN) modes. When set to MAN mode, the ARM PB brings up the programming edit page that allows you to create and save dispense programs. It's a very easy to use system.

You may also notice the O1 and O2 counts, these are for GEN-X expendables.

On the radar front, much of the work is on the locking of targets in STT and LTWS modes. This is also critical for the ACM modes.

Other focused work continues on the flight model / FCS, bombing HUD, INS, and audio.

A small thing, but we also adjusted the DDIs and MPCD to not be smudgy messes.

“Hornet Navigation System Update

A very important aspect of creating a realistic navigation systems is accounting for magnetic variation. Over the past week, the team has been implementing this. We now have a Magnetic Azimuth Detector (MAD)and Magnetic Variation implemented as part of the Mission Computer (MC) 1 code. Note that the MAD is actually a separate system that provides data to the Air Data Computer (ADC), which in turns sends the data to the MC. For the two Mission Computers, we are essentially creating them virtually. This allows us more accuracy, particularly in regards to failures.

This will now allow proper magnetic heading differences (true heading vs magnetic heading and will be available on the HSI.

Realistic magnetic and true heading computations for DG/SLAVE/COMP INS are also in progress.

This is all in parallel to getting the INS Waypoint systems up and running, a crucial item of the Early Access release.

As good as a expert advisor would make this more realistic, I would be content with speculative theories made by the developers of Jane's FA-18 back in the day. It's always great to see subject matter experts willing to advise, but I think for the vast majority who will never fly this bird or it's equipment in real life, just having a decent jammer and decoy set up would be just as great to counter newer AAA and SAM threats. Having seen so much of this hardware mature in real life has been great to see, including IR seeker lasers and improved jamming equipment.

I'm in the middle of my retirement, so hardly any time to already add to the beta team on another platform for now. Hopefully things will settle down after I get the wife moved, good thing is I'll still have access to most of the systems in post-Army life. The ASE systems are all pretty user friendly, until you dig into the BIT features, mostly turn it on and hope it works for the everyday line pilot! It does make sense for one to know each system for the whole "staying alive" part.

Absolutely knowledge is power regarding your avionics inner workings. I too was amazed at how few of my peers really cared enough to dig into the deeper inner workings of some of the ground based electronics, assuming they will work each time you roll out the FOB. I just shook my head in disbelief each time and said a small prayer for them.

Kudos on your forthcoming retirement. I retired 1 April 2016. It was admittedly a bit daunting, since Infantry skills do not directly have a civilian counterpart. Feel free to PM me for any questions or advice.

"A few years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Lemoore NAS to get some time in one of their F/A-18C dome sims. It was a great experience and provided a great perspective to flying the Hornet. One item that caught me though was just how fragile the gear doors can be when over-sped. Today, we added this as a new damage element to our Hornet.

As mentioned in this week’s newsletter, progress on the Hornet is moving along quickly with much of the work focused on the air-to-air radar modes, defensive systems, INS waypoint navigation, and flight dynamics / Flight Control Computer. Our next Hornet academic video will instruct on Hornet TACAN and ADF navigation."

Back in 1990, I was part of a 4 man civilian PLST team at our local field which was tasked with refueling the Blue Angels with their early F/A-18A's (and lone B model). I recall the maintenance team giving extra scrutiny to the Lead and Opposing Solo aircraft. They told me that #5 had higher wear on the landing gear bay doors due to the Dirty Roll maneuver on takeoff. They told me that the door hinges and actuator rods & fasteners weren't overly speed sensitive extended as they were significantly fragile to actuation movement at high speeds. Just out of curiosity, what is the absolute gear down/actuation speed limit coded in for this model?

Hello Storm,I would imagine DCS are doing an accurate Hornet based on Boeing and NATOPS data,Looking through The F/A-18 ABCD NATOPS Manual I found this...

"7.3.2 Approach. See figure 7-2. Enter the pattern as prescribed by local course rules. At the break, reduce thrust and extend the speedbrake (if required). As the airspeed decreases through 250 knots, lower the landing gear and place the FLAP switch to FULL and ensure that speedbrake is retracted.Retract speedbrake, if extended. Decelerate to on-speed, and compare airspeed and angle of attack.Complete the landing checklist. Roll into the base leg and establish a rate of descent, maintainingon-speed AOA. On-speed without external stores and 2,000 pounds of internal fuel is about 125 knots.Add about 2.5 knots for each 1,000 pounds increase in fuel and stores. Rate of descent can beestablished using the velocity vector on the HUD to set the glide-slope. Avoid overcontrolling thethrottles as thrust response is immediate. Compensate for crosswind by crabbing the aircraft into thewind on final approach. "

So Im thinking 250 knots or less?? This seems high to me though,Maybe someone with more knowledge of the aircraft can chime to n?

StormILM
February 10th, 2018, 10:35
Yeah, that's what I read as well. The Blue's maintenance techs mentioned they could exceed that speed with the gear out, just not actuate retraction/extension above those speeds. I took note that the Lead Solo would start off his TO run in full burner but retard the power to a lower burner zone. At GO (rotation), start the initial climb at the same power setting, center the control/pitch, start the full deflection 360 degree Dirty Roll and at wings level, pull the pitch/AoA up and go into max burner to arrest the sink rate. After that, the pilot would enter a 30 degree bank (correction, more like a 60 degree bank) clearing turn, go wings level and begin a steep climb (only then retracting the gear). The other maneuver the Blues perform gear down is the Diamond Dirty Loop which is impressive!

"Under the category of small details, we implemented differential engine modeling this week. Rather than each engine underlying modeling and IFEI indication for RPM, EGT, FF, and OIL PSI being the same, they are now modeled as separate, dynamic entities. While this may seem like a rather small thing, it has required quite a bit of work, but we feel it will provide a much more realistic modeling of the F-404 EPs. In the end, this was a must-do.

You are very harsh on yourself.

I am of course still learning too, but I learned what I do know mostly by flying the tutorial missions quite a few times and also the Georgian Hammer campaign several times. I find the campaigns to be great learning tools for DCS World as they kind of throw you in to the deep end, but have a gradual increase in difficulty. In saying that it was/is quite often I would need to look something up in the manuals, or need to re-fly a tutorial on something specific. As with all the DCS World aircraft, I will often forget things when I haven't flown it in a while.

I am currently flying the A-10C Red Flag campaign, and again I am learning things as I go. I needed to look up info on the comms for the last few missions.

A really good guide which you should keep handy is "Chuck's A-10C Warthog Guide"

"Over the past several months there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes that has been confined to code… nothing visible to really show. More recently, more and more of this work is now being tied together and integrated into the larger simulation. The included screen shot shows some of this work:

- Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM) modes. The Hornet has several ACM modes that include boresight acq, vertical acq, wide acq, and long range auto acq. In the image, you can see vertical acq selected, illustrated on the HUD and attack display. Much of the radar effort is currently focused on Single Track Target (STT) logic.

- Not as obvious in this image, but target aging is also now implemented. Unlike our current implementation of air-to-air radar that is based on target IDs, the Hornet moves us to a much more realistic air-to-air radar model that faithfully simulates the radar beam.

- On the Azimuth Display (aka RWR scope), we now have detection logic working that uses a much improved simulation of radar detection. In a related matter, the Control Indicator Panel is also now function that allows the Azimuth Display and DDI EW page to tailor the displays. This also includes the correct BIT.

- On the left DDI you will note that waypoint data is now displayed on the HSI with the ability to select one of five sequences. You may also notice TACAN and ADF information is also displayed.

In the second image, you can observe some improvements we are making to the reflective properties of the displays.

Thought this would be interesting to post here.Differences between Hornet Lot #. The DCS Hornet will be based on a F/A-18C Lot#20.

Differences between LOTS
(lot means production year of the airframe, each lot includes previous upgrades etc )

Lot 12.
The Lot 12 series F/A-18, introduced in FY90, provided the
F/A-18 with a night attack capability.
This was accomplished by providing NVG compatible
cockpit lighting and displays, a thermal imaging navigation set, digital map set, multipurpose color displays, and a raster HUD. In addition, an independent aft cockpit capability was included for the two-seat F/A-18D (USMC) version.

Lot 13.
The Lot 13 series F/A-18 was introduced in FY91. The enhancements provided by this Lot included the OBOGS, which replaced the lox converter. The NACES and SEWARS were added and armament capabilities were enhanced through the additional hardware provisions for AGM-86 Harpoon and AGM-84 Stand-off Land Attack Missile. The Inertial Navigation System (INS) was also upgraded to the AN/ASN-139 that uses ring laser gyro technology.

Lot 14.
The Lot 14 series F/A-18 was introduced in FY92. This update added full AN/ARC-210 HAVEQUICK/SINCGARS VHF FM Radio provisions to the aircraft and the AN/AAS-38A FLIR/LDT was also incorporated into the F/A-18. Additionally, the Deployable Flight Incident Recorder Set (DFIRS) provides non-volatile storage of the last 30 minutes of flight incident data in a deployable unit.

Lot 15.
Delivered in FY93, the Lot 15 series F/A-18 integrated an enhanced engine into the airframe. The F404-GE-400 Power Plant was replaced by the F404- GE-402 EPE. The new engine provided increased power, coupled with reduced fuel consumption. Additionally, the XN-8 Mission Computer and the 91 series Operational Flight
Program (OFP) were introduced.

Lot 16.
The enhancements provided by the Lot 16 series F/A-18, which was introduced in FY94, included the integration of the AN/APG-73 Radar Upgrade (RUG) Phase I. The primary improvements provided by the AN/APG-73 RUG Phase I were increased Electronic Counter Countermeasures capabilities, increased memory and processing
speed of the signal and data processing functions, and increased receiver bandwidth combining to provide growth capabilities for incorporation of advanced radar modes. The AN/ARC-210 HAVEQUICK/SINCGARS VHF FM Radio was also installed along with the LAU-115 Launcher improvements and incorporation of the 09 (formerly 93) series OFP.I-10

Pat, thanks for the update. I wish they would just release the beauty. I realize DCS has a mixed bag of reviews on some of their previous releases (Hawk especially). Everything you showcase just proves this thing is already leaps and bounds beyond anything released after the A-10.

I got an email today that stated Eagle Dynamics added shipping details (to the account I used for payment). Does that mean the aircraft is soon to be shipped to end users? One can only hope!

How do you mean shipping details? Surely the product is provided as a download through an update to DCS as usual.

I would be a bit wary if I got that email.

Cheers,

I just went and checked my email and I didn't receive anything like this (indicating a release date). The only thing close to that was the original invoice but nothing notated like mentioned here. Looking at the current progression (and my own experience in development/testing), I'd tend to think mid to late May. If it's ready by late April, that's all the more great.

Basically, here is what the email said -

Dear Jay _-_-_-_,
Eagle Dynamics SA added shipping details. Please note that the tracking information and shipping status are shown exactly as the seller entered them.

Not much about shipping and no shipping date, but I just thought it unusual because I purchased the item about a month ago. If I get anything definite I will post.

BTW, the shots posted by Phantom reinforce my purchase decision. They look fantastic.

It is beyond me why the aircraft in it's currently demonstrated state could not be released...with the maneuvers they just demonstrated and everything else currently in place, this is going to be one kick arse bird. Graphically, I felt like I was watching the real Hornet doing an airshow, from the LEX and wingtip vertices, to the high alpha maneuver (cobra?), just simply amazing.

***Mini Update***
"Hornet update time!

As mentioned earlier, a lot of the work is focused on the air-to-air radar, and Single Track Target (STT) mode in particular. This uses “electronic roll” logic and we are now finalizing the antenna scan and limits. Once that is done, we can finish up the ACM modes and STT lock in BVR mode. This would also then allow us to finish up air-to-air symbology for the HUD and attack display.

I had hoped/planned to next do an IFR field landing video, but we first want to set up proper instrumentation for the approach. USN Hornets are NOT equipped with standard ILS equipment. Instead, they most often use ACLS, PAR, or ICLS. We had first planned ICLS, but it appears this is no longer used, so we will instead develop ACLS ground stations that can be placed at an airfield, but like a TACAN station. Instead, I think the next academic video will be aerial refueling (became functional this week).

The waypoint system is making great progress, with just a few items to clean up on the DATA page and include the appropriate HUD data.

The art team further improved the cockpit by adding an albedo property to the textures using a PBR rendering method. This gives the surfaces a more authentic paint on metal look. You can see this in the two attached images.

Other advancements have also been made on the Hornet external sounds and the vapor effects."

Over the weekend the team implemented both big and small items into the latest build that move us ever forward to an Early Access release. We are still on track for an Early Access release prior to the end of Spring 2018. However, we have no tighter estimate at this time given the complexities involved and the unknowns of how long testing will require.1- The Waypoint navigation system is now functional in the simulation and tied to the Inertial Navigation System (INS). This includes indications both on the HSI and HUD. This also includes most of the functionality for the HSI/DATA/WYPT page. This will provide most waypoint functions used by players. After Early Access release, we will implement the option for the programming of three waypoint sequences in the Mission Editor and the creation of Offset Waypoints using the HSI page. The last big item for waypoints in the Early Access release will be implementing the Waypoint Designate (WPDSG) option, that will set the selected waypoint as the target point. This is important for both weapon and sensor cuing.
2- Starting from an airfield or aircraft carrier has some key differences when setting up the cockpit controls. For example: When starting from an airfield, the Hook Bypass switch should be set to FIELD and the Anti-Skid switch should be set to ON; when starting on an aircraft carrier, the Hook Bypass switch should be set to should be set to CARRIER and the Anti-Skid switch should be set to OFF. This weekend we enabled the ability to set default cockpit configurations for Ramp, Hot, and Runway starts to account for the starting location.
3- Aerial refueling is now implemented. Now I just need to get good enough at this to not embarrass myself too much in a video.
4- Fuel dump logic and animation has been implemented. This can be quite important to meeting max trap weights.
Onward and upwards!

"Hornet Radar Update

As noted in the last several updates, one of the primary tasks is coding the air-to-air modes of the AN/APG-73 radar for the Hornet. The current focus is on Single Track Target (STT) mode as this will be vital for radar directed gun, radar-slaved AIM-9, and PD illumination for AIM-7. This work is currently revolving around target angles/range filtering and symbology display behavior.

Work is still in progress on search/acquisition radar modes in regard to scan limits applied by antenna servo electronics, in addition to physical antenna gimbal limits. This all involve coordinate transformation (antenna/scan frames, SPRS (Space Pitch/Roll Stabilized), body frame while accounting for antenna electronic roll stabilization.

In parallel, the needed data for future MSI (Multi-Sensor Integration) routines and modes like LTWS (latent TWS) is being coded and would be sent to the MC2 (Mission Computer 2).

A lot of work is being done on code-structure refinement. Given all the functionality is being worked on, we have to avoid the code from becoming spaghetti-like.

The implemented and in-progress data structures and algorithms (like target search, target data filtering, antenna electronic roll stabilization, etc.) will help us in later projects, and we hope this will reduce those development times.

Attached is a very simple debug screenshot.

"As we mover ever-closer to the Early Access release of the Hornet, more and more of our work is shifting to the air-to-air radar and weapon systems.Over the past several weeks, the focus of air-to-air radar work has been on Single Target Track (STT) mode. This is critical for what we plan for the Early Access release. This week, it is initially operational in the simulation, as you can see in the attached. The next big step is to complete the attack radar symbology and data and then the various HUD information. Still very work-in-progress.
Similar to SPI in the A-10C, the Hornet allows you to designate a Target Point (TP) that can then be used to slave sensors and weapons to. There are several ways to create a TP, but the one we are finishing up now is the ability to set a waypoint as a TP using the WPDSG function on the HSI. HSI symbology is complete, as well as most of the HUD data. We just need to set up the target diamond of the TP location when looking through the HUD.
Earlier we talked about the ability to set a course line based on a selected TACAN station or Waypoint by using the course knob. This week we also added the ability to set a course using the UFC… much faster.
Thanks,

"Hornet Mini-Update 2018-4-11

We are very much in a sprint now to create a Hornet press preview, which will then fold into the Early Access release version.

As is probably a familiar mantra by now, much of the work is focused on the air-to-to air radar with implementation of STT, accurate gimbal limits in reference to the antenna frame, and SRPS scan being done “electronically” based on gimbal command to correct azimuth and elevation values. This results in the actual antenna maximum sweep azimuth varies with aircraft roll angle in RWS. The antenna servo electronics have additional scan limits applied to gimbals: 40 degrees of elevation at maximum azimuth, and 50 degrees of azimuth at maximum elevation. This results in the gimbal scan limit having the shape of octagon (gimbals physical limits + the limits applied by servo electronics). This can be observed by moving the antenna up or down using manual elevation control on the throttle. You’ll be able to observe this by not touching manual elevation and set the aircraft roll to 90 degrees.

In the attached image, you can see some of this new radar code now manifested on the HUD in regards to target range and Vc. A big push is now on auto-lock for the ACM modes and correct attack radar symbology on the HUD and radar display (AA Gun, AIM-9, and AIM-7).

Navigation is basically done for the Early Access, but we’ll return to this after Early Access release and add additional functions like the GPS, Mark Points, Offset Aim Points (OAP), and ICLS. For now though, you will have TACAN, ADF, and Waypoints.

With Early Access navigation ready, this part of the team has now moved to implement the AG bombing modes on the HUD and clean up the AG gun HUD mode. Once this is done, we’ll be able to create some pretty cool videos.

The flight models is undergoing continual refinements and tuning, and it’s already quite close. However, we strive to make it even better!

We have completed all the planned skins for actual F/A-18C squadrons and we’re now working on skins for F/A-18A/A+ squadrons. We have not forgotten about you Canadians, Australians and Spaniards!

We will have seven interactive training missions at the launch of the Early Access Hornet to include: Introduction, Cold Start, Taxi and Takeoff, TACAN and ADF Navigation, Waypoint Navigation, Straight In Landing, and Overhead Pattern Landing. More will come as Hornet systems come to completion!

The Early Access Hornet Guide is undergoing art creation, and it’s our hope that we can release this prior to the Early Access release of the game.

Thanks,

Hi everyone,

We are in the final push now and very much on track for the 30th! Recently, we’ve been completing the last items we want for the early access release:

1- Almost done with the moving map, we just need to add text outlines to make the text more visible.
2- Almost all HUD symbology for early access weapons is now in place and functional.
3- Radar-directed AA Gun, AIM-9, and AIM-7 is implemented.
4- Waypoint designated target (TGT) point is now implemented for AUTO bombing.
5- EW page / ALE functions are functional and most audio tones have been enabled. ASPJ though will come after early access launch.
6- Our last task is implementing HUD designation of a TGT point. Almost done, but a few items to finish up.
7- The Hornet Early Access Guide is still in work and will probably be released with the game on the 30th.

Thanks,

Usually DCS Patches are released @ 15:00-16:00 GMT Give or take an hr,That being said,The Patch with The Persian Gulf Map was released about six hrs earlier than normal:jump: So......Who knows really? I know DCS is restructuring their bonus system,I'm sure they'd like that in place for Hornet release, plus any last minute issues with the features they want working for The Hornet EA Open Beta.

Matt has made a comment on a Hornet video concerning HOTAS setup…
"Note that we’ll have a unique control category called “HOTAS” in the Hornet mapping. This will make it very easy and fast to map your controls to best match the real HOTAS. This is just like we did for the A-10C. Once the TM Hornet stick is out, we’ll set default bindings for it."

Is it possible to make the most out of the F-18 without buying the Persian Gulf map, ie is there a good variety of missions that come with the aircraft particularly aircraft carrier take off's and landings?
I'm very tempted by the F-18 , but can't afford both that and the Persian terrain at the same time!

I am out of the simulation business temporarily as my PC got zapped as a result of a lightning strike that hit a tree in the backyard. I actually got the computer up and running but the GPU, network card, both my routers/WIFI were taken out and there's partial MB damage. I can use it for coms and backing up my remaining stuff but since I will not be going W10 on my incoming PC, my w7 system image will be useless. I will need to install DCS and everything associated with it. Good news is, I have my mods and settings totally backed up. My new system will be good for DCS with an 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8700K 6-Core Processor (12M Cache, up to 4.7 GHz) plus a NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5X GPU (VR ready). **update** from Matt........

"This past week we introduced the AIM-120 for the Hornet. Implementation is still very preliminary. However, for the 15 August update, we plan for it to be complete with the following:

1- Guidance times (HUD and RADAR) for ACT and TTG.
2- Correct visual mode with cage/uncage function, SL time, and correct off the rail guidance.

On a related matter, our missile engineer is currently focused on the AIM-7, but following that, he will re-visit AIM-120 guidance laws and flight dynamics.

Also on 15 August, we plan to implement the AIM-9X Block I, minus the JHMCS (coming afterwards).

Thanks!

***UPDATE from Matt***
"This week we will probably release a new update to the AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile (AMRAAM) that includes the following:

ACT and TTG times. When an AIM-120 is still on the rail, it will display its expected time in seconds to active (ACT) below the tactical area of the radar display. Once launched, the ACT time will appear on the HUD, and once the ACT time has reached zero, it will change to Time To Go (TTG) until impact time. Zero TTG indicates missile time out / target impact.

Once the missile is active, you can dump the radar lock and allow the missile to continue the intercept itself.

Below the missile triangle fly-out symbol on the radar display, the time to active will first be displayed and then an “A” once the missile is active.

Pressing the Cage/Uncage button, you can toggle the AIM-120 to VISUAL mode when a target is locked (STT) on the radar. The TD symbols will still appear, but the NIRD circle and its indications will be removed when in VISUAL mode with a designated target.

To use VISUAL mode, simply place a target within 10 nm inside the dashed reticle on the HUD and let ‘er rip. The missile will come off the rail in HPRF (maddog) and will attempt to lock and guide on the first return it finds. Be careful with any friends in your forward quarter

DCS F/A-18C Hornet

Eliminated slides on deck.
Added AIM-9X Air-to-Air missile.
Added indication and sounds for EW.
Added FLOOD mode for AIM-7.
Added max target aspect cue на DDI (Radar format)
TOF issues for AIM-7/120 fixed.

and......
Internally, the AIM-7 and AIM-120 versions now have the improved navigation system. Additionally, the internal AIM-7M now has several significant changes like corrected motor thrust-altitude dependence based on nozzle exit area and atmosphere pressure, adjusted drag and lift curves based on wind tunnel test data, and other changes.
We are now carefully testing these changes before we release and move to all AIM-7 and AIM-120 versions.
Also today internally, AIM-9X tracking was increased to 90 HOBS and flare rejection improved. It’s a monster.

***mini update***.
"For one of the next updates, correct Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) affect will be included. Now in the internal test version, selection of High or Medium PRF will be a significant impact on target detection.

High (HI) PRF will be able to detect targets at longer ranges, but must have a good Vc.
Medium (MED) PRF will be better at detecting targets at low Vc values (receding to abeam).
The Interleave (INTL) mode will alternate HI and MED bars in the scan.

In addition to antenna elevation, cone shape of the beam, azimuth, and range, this will be another important factor to consider when searching for targets on the radar.

Some other priority items in the cue:

1- AIM-7MH Home On Jam (HOJ) mode
2- A/A Bullseye on radar page indications
3- Radar BRA indication
4- Auto range scale adjustment
5- HARM
6- GBU-10/16/12
7- FPAS page
8- JHMCS
9- Correct radar lock loss and RTS
10- LTWS

"Time for a little update!

Much our Hornet work has been focused on an overhaul of the Hornet radar. As you might imagine, this has been a huge task, but it will be worth it for the Hornet and other aircraft. As of today, it's near impossible to shake a lock with just ownship maneuvers. Now we just need to have the radar RTS after lock loss and MEM mode times out.

We've also started initial tests of the JHMCS in the simulation. The attached image is an image of the HMD at a VERY incomplete state. We are now adding more and more of its symboloy and functions.

MK-82YT Ballute and CBU-100 have been added internally.

Speaking of CBU, the destructive power of anti-armor sub-munitions have been significantly increased, as well as the coverage footprint.

The Flashing X on the radar has been when a person skips turning on the radar during a cold start has been fixed.

Target lock in MPRF against short range, high-aspect targets has been corrected.

AIM-7 HOJ is active development.

New interactive training missions for CASE I recovery, AIM-9, and AIM-120 are now being created.

Locked target HUD symbology jumping around has been addressed.

TCN symboloy on HSI when viewed from a duplicate display has been fixed.

Other items in the near-term cue:

- HARM
- LGBs
- FPAS page
- Automatic range scale adjustment
- A/A Waypoint, BRA, and Bullseye functions
- LTWS

ATFLIR is also a high priority, but we first need to complete a an all new and improved FLIR rendering system.

Thanks!"

In next week’s update, we will further refine MEM (memory) mode, TDC location after a dropped lock (not move to stowed position), and B-Sweep behavior after a lost lock. The remaining item in this task is to adjust B-Sweep after an Undesignate Button track cancel. We are also now working on L&S auto-centering."

"As mentioned previously, one of our priority tasks for the Hornet is the introduction of the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS).https://www.rockwellcollins.com/Products-and-Services/Defense/Avionics/Displays-and-Controls/Helmet-Mounted-Displays/Joint-Helmet-Mounted-Cueing-System.aspx (https://steamcommunity.com/linkfilter/?url=https://www.rockwellcollins.com/Products-and-Services/Defense/Avionics/Displays-and-Controls/Helmet-Mounted-Displays/Joint-Helmet-Mounted-Cueing-System.aspx)
This week we passed a key milestone with the completion of basic symbology, display blanking (most of the HMD is not displayed when looking at the HUD), and some of the related DDI pages.

***Mini Update***

Update time!

As mentioned in a recent newsletter, we are pushing hard for JHMCS with AIM-9X support, Maverick, FPAS page, and corrected A/A antenna logic after undesignated button lock release. All is looking good, but the AGM-65F and G versions will unfortunately not be ready until next month.

We, for the most part, have four guys working on Hornet systems and here is what they are working on:
1- JHMCS. Afterward he moves on to the HARM.
2- AGM-65E. Once done, then AGM-65F and G.
3- A/A radar antenna. When complete, then LTWS.
4- FPAS page. Then after that, then probably “soft lock” IFF or Data Link / SA page.

The Hornet systems team is working full time on the Hornet, but some of the items are complex and take time. No one is slacking off.

Once the Maverick and HARM are fully functional, we’ll start work on the second Hornet mini-campaign.

We have ten new training missions in work that include:
IFR Airfield Approach
Carrier Taxi and Takeoff
Carrier CASE I Recovery
A/A Gun
AIM-9L/M
AIM-120
A/G Gun
Rockets
CCIP Bombs
CCRP Bombs

You may be saying to yourself, “but Wags, you forgot CASE II,III and AIM-7!” Negative Ghostrider, we need those items to be completed before we can make the training mission for them (full comm for CASE II,III and HOJ mode for the Sparrow).

Supporting tech like the A/G radar (we lost our original engineer on this) and an improved FLIR rendering system are in work and are fundamental to A/G radar implementation and the ATFLIR.

So things are moving forward at a good clip, but this is a very complex product and it will take time.

Thank you for your patience!

"After extenstive testing, the A/A radar break lock errors look to be fixed. A side-benefit of the revisited core-antenna logic is that the ACM modes lock much faster now (VACQ in particular). This is planned for release in the next OB update.JHMCS AIM-9X cueing is also testing well (VR recommended). But display of radar-locked target data to the HMD needs further testing.
FPAS page needs a bit more work on the NAV TO function.
Team is plugging away at the L Mav.

Question, how many degrees off boresight (nose) can the AIM-9X be locked and fired in sim? Just curious if you can lock at fire out at 90 degrees or not. The max acquisition HOBS is 80 degrees but firing is 90. It doesn't always work well at those extreme angles but I have made multiple kills. In certain circumstances and scenarios, you can use AIM-9X HOBS to fight your way out of a defensive multiple bogeys situation. It sure beats having to bring the nose full on!

We’ve been listening, and in one of the next updates we’ll be providing the ability to show the JHMCS projection on the left, right, or both eyes when in VR.
While the left and both eye options are not realistic, we are making this available in the Hornet Options / Special tab for those that wish to use this.
Additionally, a lot of work is now focused on the Datalink / SA page. The first big step is creating the two MIDS radios and their interfaces / functions.

For one of the next Open Beta updates we will add the A/A Waypoint (bullseye) along with range and bearing to ownship and TDC from bulls is displayed. This can be set to any waypiont, and you’d want to have one waypoint at the same location as the bullseye set for the mission.
Additionally, the Bearing Range and Altitude (BRA) of the TDC cursor to the player ownship is displayed.
Please see the attached image.
From the HSI/DATA/WYPT sublevel, A/A WP pushbutton (2) can be pressed to have the selected waypoint be the bullseye. When selected, the following happens:
1- The A/A WP legend is boxed.
2- A bullseye symbols will be shown in the tactical region of the AA radar display (RWS, STT, LTWS, and TWS).
3- When the bullseye waypoint is also the selected navigation waypoint, the symbol appears as a diamond with arrow point to north.
4- When the bullseye waypoint is not the selected navigation waypoint, the symbol appears as a circle with arrow point to north. See attached.
5- The arrow pointer on the bullseye symbols can point to either true or magnetic north, based on the HSI/DATA/AC sublevel selection.
Bearing and Range of TDC and Ownship to Bullseye Indications
Also note that when bullseye is enabled, that the bearing and distance of the player ownship to the bullseye is displayed in the bottom center radar display.
The bearing and range of the TDC to the bullseye is displayed in the top right portion of the radar display. See attached.

***mini update***

Hi everyone!

This week we plan to migrate the current Open Beta to the Release version. We've put this off for the past two weeks as we worked on some Hornet and other items.

For next week's Open Beta, we plan (not promise):

1- GBU-10, 12, and 16 laser-guided bombs with off-board designation.
2- Bullseye (A/A Waypoint) and BRA indications.
3- Improved IR Maverick axis slew and other Maverick fixes/additions like improved ship attack, longer ship lock ranges, range indications when slaved, and others.
4- Fixed DUD cue.
5- New radar defaults based on SME feedback.
6- Fixed cockpit art like left DDI error.
7- JHMCS updates like look-up reticles.
8- Air show smoke.
9- Fixed ACM HUD mode indications.
10- L&S target heading on attack format.

I'll have some Bulls/BRA and LGB videos coming by the weekend.

In parallel, the team is hard at work on the HARM, datalink (SA page, MIDS, Link-16), FLIR rendering tech, and A/G rendering tech.

All of this will be part of 2.5.4.

Thanks!

I watched the VFAT performance of the Virtual Blue Angels. Amazing! The resolution was so clear. I have not gotten interested in DCS much at all, (even though I do have it installed), as I am waiting for the Tomkitty to be released. I am more interested in Cold War Era aircraft. But the Virtual Blue Angels were great! NC:encouragement:

Chief, I have the Hornet and it is simply spectacular as is the Harrier and most of the other modules (I have nothing but Jets in DCS, the F-5E, Mig-21, F-86, Mig-15, Viggen, Mig-29, SU-27, SU-33, F-15C, SU-25, A-10A, freeware A-4E, and MB339). I also have the Nevada and Persian Gulf maps. For me, nothing beats the combined dynamics of DCS in terms of feel, visuals, and systems depth for fighter/high performance models. I still use P3Dv4 for heavies, etc but I tend to gravitate to DCS more these days. Eventually I will get the Tomcat but for now, I have my hands full with the Hornet.

Oh yes, I have no doubt it is high quality! Thing is, I bought the VRS Superbug years ago, and rarely ever flew it. I love flying Virtavia's Skyhawk a lot. Have to say though, my favorite USN aircraft for carrier ops is still the Intruder. Those wing tip spoilers really help control approach speed!! NC:encouragement:

NC, as with you I do like anything with a true tailhook on it, but after getting back into DCS with the new cpu, it's been a blast around the boat with the Hornet. I'm a Tomcat fan, so it's pre-ordered and waiting, but the other modules lend more immersion for me regarding Storm's post than what I can get out of P3D, more tweaking I'm sure. I've got photoreal for Nellis in P3D, but the DCS map just needs some heat added and you're in Vegas! The recent freeware A-4 is fun, and I would get an A-6 or A-7 that came out instantly. The F-5 is also good with steam gauges and I do have the Harrier, just spend more time in the F/A-18. On TrackIR for now as I decide on VR, but very enjoyable.

****Mini Update****

"n today’s Hornet mini-date, I thought I’d start talking about some of the Data Link (D/L) and Situational Awareness (SA) page fundamentals prior to release. We hope to release into the Open Beta later this month. There is a lot to take in, so let’s get started early. Naturally, there will be introduction videos, academic videos, interactive training lessons, and a manual chapter on this. Let’s talk about some of the elements:Much like the HSI, you have your TDC relation to bullseye (A/A Waypoint) in the top left corner. In the same manner, you have many of the same waypoint controls like display of the selected waypoint, bearing/distance/time to selected waypoint, and sequence options. If the selected waypoint is visible on the SA display, it appears as a circle with the waypoint number in the center, with north arrow.
In the bottom left corner are your chaff and flare counters. O1 and O2 will come later. Yes, we’ll have option for 120 flares.
When enabled from PB 7, yellow triangle symbols appear along the bearing to air-to-air radar emitters. These have options to be set to off, side, and ID or not.
Green contacts are identified as friendly, red as hostile, and yellow as unknown. This is done through a combination of IFF and NCTR prints.
There are three possible sources of data that can build the SA picture: ownship sensors, other fighters (F/F), and AWACS aircraft like E-2 and E-3 (SURV). These sources are then correlated or they can be toggled on and off from the SENSR sub-level page on PBs 13, 14, and 15. PPLI allows the location and data sharing of networked aircraft.
When only ownship sensors detect a target, only the top half of the HAFU (symbol) is displayed. When only from an F/F donor, only the bottom half is displayed. If both ownship and a donor detect the same contact, then both top and bottom halves of the HAFU are displayed. Contacts only detected by a SURV donor, are smaller in size circle or diamond generally.
When the TDC is assigned to the SA page (indicated as diamond in top right corner), the TDC can be slewed. When placed over a contact, its Mach and altitude in thousands of feet is displayed on either side of the TDC cursor. While hovering over a contact, additional information is displayed in the bottom right corner of the display and this can vary based on its identification. Such data can include: NCTRprint, bearing and range from ownship, bearing and range from bullseye, fuel level, callsign, etc.
A small dot on the left side of a green circle indicates it is a donor to the Link-16 network and is sharing data with you. A dot in the center of the circle indicates it is a command and control (C2) asset.
B, C, or D inside a contact indicates it is one of your flight wingmen.
The number shown for red contacts indicates its threat ranking.
More functions will be coming soon, which I’ll talk about at a later point.
Please remember that this is very much work in progress and very much subject to change.
Thanks,
Wags

Ah Bummer Storm....Did you try the "Repair" function? Tuat usually works for me when things go Haywire :pop4:

I was about to jump through the hoops of using the Cleanup and Repair functions BUT I read on one of the ED forums that some folks had post update issues like I did and they identified the freeware MB-339PAN addon as the culprit. I removed it from both my DCS and Open Beta install locations and BAM! Issue resolved! Not sure what is going on with that addon and DCS but it is for some a show stopper. I had done numerous updates on my main DCS and Open Beta versions with the MB-339PAN and never had this issue before. I can live without it if needed but maybe they will fix it soon or at least figure out what's causing the issue so they can prevent this from happening with other addons.

The Data Link (D/L) Situational Awareness (SA) page and new radar functions are making steady progress, so I thought I’d make another little update using images. This all very much work in progress and subject to change.
The first image shows the radar format on the left DDI with Latent Track While Scan (LTWS) selected and the TDC hovering over a brick. The brick now displays the selected weapon Launch Acceptable Region (LAR) as well as target Mach (left of HAFU) and altitude in thousands of feet (right of HAFU). The next step would be to designate the target as the Launch and Steering (L&S) target and the ability to set a secondary Designated Target (DT2). Along with a hover over contact, you can get additional information up to three contacts in LTWS mode. With MSI enabled, you’ll also then have D/L information available. Once LTWS is done, then we’ll take care of Track While Scan (TWS) mode.
On the right DDI is the SA page five unknown contacts at the top of the page., They are yellow because they have no ownship IFF interrogation (hover over contact and depress sensor hat switch to interrogate). The staple at the top of the HAFU indicates the player has no IFF on a target, but the lower chevrons indicate friendly donor aircraft (F/F) have set the targets as hostile. Once both the player interrogates the contact and comes back negative, then the HAFU would change to red and be a diamond. In this way, the color and top and bottom of the HAFU tell you a lot about the classification of the contact.
Remember: staple = unknown, chevron = hostile, and semi-circle = friendly. Yellow = unknown, red = hostile, and green = friendly based on ownship.
In the second image the left DDI now shows a target locked in STT with Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) enabled. A successful NCTR print of the target depends on range and aspect angle into the intakes of the contact.
On the right DDI we see that the target is identified as an IL-76 and the star HAFU indicates the STT L&S track. It is yellow because no ownship IFF interrogation has been made. Because the radar is in STT, it is not scanning for other targets. As such, all other contacts on the SA page are from F/F and SURV sources over the D/L. The smaller red triangles are SURV tracks from an AWACS that only the AWACS is seeing. The red lower chevrons with the dot is from a friendly donor (F/F) source.

A new datalink / SA page element was added today to support for SAM threat zones. These are determined before hand and are static indications based on Mission Editor settings. If the unit is hidden it will not appear on the SA display, if it is not hidden, it will display. Just like the real system, this is NOT a dynamic indication based on RWR or any sensors. It simply alerts the pilot of a reported SAM threat that was entered in the mission file before they even took off.

"Hey everyone,As mentioned in earlier posts, we are at work on a detailed Aircraft Settings capability through the Options, F/A-18C, Special Tab. This consists of two primary elements: Aircraft Systems and Mission Card. Both will allow you to pre-configure the Hornet before flight in both single and multiplayer. As such, you would be able to setup your own aircraft defaults.
Aircraft Systems include all functions that are NOT specific to mission (.miz) file or Mission Computer settings. This includes such items as lights, bingo fuel, various cockpit switches, altimeter, etc. In this way, you can have your aircraft setup just that way YOU want it.
The Mission Card allows you to set up software options for all missions that includes such items as radar settings, countermeasures, AG weapon programs, and navigation settings.
The third element of mission configuration MUST apply directly to the specific mission file or there will conflict between Aircraft Settings and the mission file… these are the waypoint settings. As always, a mission is created with a set of waypoints and properties when the mission is created by the mission designer. For the Hornet though, we are greatly adapting this to account for a much more realistic Hornet waypoint system that accounts for up to 60 waypoints in the database, of which waypoints can be assigned properties of sequence 1, sequence 2, sequence 3, initial point, A/A waypoint, Pre-Planned (PP), or Pre-Briefed (PB). In the Mission Planner, the player would be able to then adjust these if desired on a per-mission basis. We are also looking to making the Mission Planner available in multiplayer.
This will also include a new waypoint user interface that we’ll share a bit later once it is more solid.
This is all deep in development and very much subject to change. We have no release time frame in mind yet… it will be released to an Open Beta once we feel it’s ready.

"I’ll be talking about this much more in the next week or two, but basic JDAM is coming along well. Here is an image of the JDAM in Target Of Opportunity (TOO) mode. This will be in addition to the Pre-Planned (PP) mode. Once the the basic modes are in, we will add the dynamic launch zone indications on the HUD and HSI.In the meantime, we are shooting for (not a promise) D/L SA page and HARM TOO mode for 27 February.
In parallel, LTWS, Aircraft/Mission Card, and wake turbulence are all progressing well.
I will be away for the next week, so there will be no new updates until next week.
