i have not been able to download yet but i have a question in the off installer can you change location from the normal install cfs3 for example
i do not want to have off come from my original copy of cfs3
but my backup stock copy i have in a folder i called off is this possible
Polovski
December 17th, 2005, 19:33
volkstony, OFF doesn't install into your CFS3, it's been said on other threads it does NOT touch your current install, just takes things from it. You install it to a different place completely!
Make sure your "good" CFS3 is working fine. Then quit and install OFF. No worries.

No you can't tell OFF were your CFS is we need the actual one that's working. The one installed in the registry etc. We take those values and files from various places indicated by a current working CFS install.
If you are saying you want to rename your current CFS3 and replace the folder with a cleaner one, well as long as you can then play that CFS3 just like it had been installed and it works, then I would imagine OFF would work. All I can tell you is how OFF is designed to work, you have to meet us half way and give us a current working CFS3 install, if it's some half baked one then maybe it will crash out who knows :). You can always try it. if it blows up then remove all traces of the OFF install folders etc, then reinstall a fresh CFS3 and then OFF.

OK, I finally got the thing dl'd by multi dls of the split files at about 8-20kb
The only patches to CFS3 were the MS 3.1 and WM 4.6 terrain, so uninstalled MW terrain manager, etc.
Ran CFS3 and everything was working fine.
Unpacked the number 1 split rar file into the same folder as the other 15 rar parts and ran the install in it
The initial install that I assume unpacks all those rar files worked fine
The install program started for OFF and very slowly got to the 95% point on the indicator bar, then stopped with a pop up "fatal error" window.. (see the screen shot)
I installed the OFF upgrade patch, worked fine
I ran the csconfg utility and checked that it matched the OFF settings
Started OFF and got an error message about it not being installed, so ran the workshop manual install and it said it was good
restated OFF and all seems fine, menu screen, music, video, etc.
created a pilot and selected him
If I try to fly quick mission, custom mission, campaign, I get the engine start sound then a screen pops up and tells me that the missions can not be found.
In the OFF Workshop the paths don't look right for the application, its in my docs & settings folder (see the screen shot)
I looked in Win Explorer and there doesn't seem to be any thing in the OFF historical, whatif or training folders except a text file.
That's where I'm at and I'm going to... http://www.rhoag.com/Forums/smilies/surrender.gif Could that last 5% that didn't appear to finish installing have been the mission files? If that was the problem, which rar files are they in, or should I do a whole install again?
thanks for any help

WildBat - glad you got it OK.
So is that folder actually missing?
If it isn't then maybe the path name is too long.. have to check with WM when he awakes from his NZ slumber ;)
If it IS there and you don't want to wait until tomorrow ;)
then you can try deleting "CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields" folder from the C:\Documents and Settings\<yourname>\Application Data\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields
delete the "CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields" game folder and delete the same folder from "My Documents"
Then re-install try a shorter path name like E:\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields
whatever.
Otherwise just a thought but as a temp measure have you tried making another pilot at a different time (season) and change the active one to the new one and then trying again. Need to check with WM as my E:\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\assets\WW1Autumn is emtpy too, not sure it is meant to be....

Well any error at install isn't good, that's where I'd start rather than fudging it to work.
Did all 16 rar files unpack OK? Do a TEST on the part1.rar from within Winrar.
make sure is checks out OK. Then make sure you have plenty of space free on the drive you install OFF to (Needs about 2GB+)

I only unpacked the #1 rar, per your instructions at your site, then ran the install in it... was I supposed to unpack all of them first? I thought the install in the #1 rar file took care of that. :icon_eek:
Maybe I should go check that each rar file will unpack OK.. they are all the same size, about 40mb, except #16 that is about 13mb
I just unpacked #16 and #15 and #14 rar files to separate folders and they all appear to have the identical exe file, OverFlandersFieldsPhase1Version0.3.exe ... now I'm really confused. :isadizzy:
I've got plenty of space, about 12gb free on the C: drive it was installed on.

Hi Rob - your Paths are fine.
Your Install did not complete - that is a fatal error hence the message - if you do not get past this then OFF will never work.
It is possible that it is associated with the partial download and something is missing.

When you started OFF ( double clicked on teh OFF icon) did it self initialise and tell you "OFF will now initialize.......DO NOT REBOOT"?
If not you will need to go to workshops and press the Manual Install button on the right

Hi all,
first many, many thanks for your hard work :applause:;
I tried to install OFF and have now the following problem:
After a fresh install from CFS3 with patches 3.1 an d 3.1a, i installed OFF 0.3 and the patch 0.31; when i tried to start OFF i´ve got an error message, which asked for a file MSSTDFMT.DLL, what can i do?

next problem:
started the game, named a pilot, went to quick mission, klicked "go to hangar" - and nothing; the game is asking for files like ww1autumnlight and etc.
i looked in the game folder and saw that beside the OFF folder there is a folder called WW1Scenery in which i found some of these files, copied them into the game folder, but no luck; is this folder from the 0.31 update? or is it right?

I am just about ready to give up on installing OFF.
After 4 failed tries, I uninstalled the stock clean CFS3 with patches, deleted it totally, installed it again, and now I tried 2 times to install OFF and boths times it gave me this error:
So far it has cost me 6.5 hours of no progress on the install (where one got installed all the way, but came up and gave me errors) + the 12 hours of trying to dl it.
*sigh*
Computer is virus free and defragged recently when I installed MAW2.0 Alpha.

Tomas - your CFSWW1 install folder name must always be:
\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields
NOTHING else.
To reinstall read this thread - clean up first:

Only glitch I had, which was a head scratcher, was the sliders were set too high (all max in my CFS3 install). Apparently OFF picked up those settings and took forever to get into a quick mission, and then all the objects except the ground were white or at best gray scale. This included dialog boxes, so I couldnt even see the proper buttons to puch to exit.
Anywho, I resolved the problem by going into the config menu and turned everything back to the 2 settings, then it loaded missions fine. After that I was able to sneak up on better settings one at a time.
By the way every thing looked great at two, and as I raise the settings it just gets better.
Thanks team for your very hard work, the results are fantastic.

Hi there It dawned on me after reading the read-me!! that the game has to have been played before OFF can finish the install- so a clean install of CSF3 is good but until you have opened CSF3 and played it cannot finish and will give you that fatal error message. The 2nd time I installed all went well and it's looking good.
What a fantastic add-on this may well prove to be.

I've been battling power outages with stormy weather here on the coast so haven't been able to post till now...
This morning, I started reading through all the posts.
Got WM answer about paths being correct above
I checked and the, scrrun.dll, msstdfmt.dll, are upto date and installed.
Then saw the post by WM:
"Delet the UISEL.XML C:\Documents and Settings\"User Name"\Application Data\Microsoft\Combat Flight Simulator 3.0
NOTE this is the standard CFS3 Folder Retry OFF"
This fixed it in OFF-I flew some in instant fly and wow is it beautfil looking!
New problem in CFS3.. I closed OFF, stated CFS3 and now I get the error message in CFS3 that no missions can be found. Any suggestions on what might be going on and a solution?
by the way.. sure glad there is that icon position save utility that you pointed out... every time I leave OFF I have to reset all my icons because I run at 1280x1024 ...maybe a fix in phase 2? :kilroy:
Just a note, the little bit I flew in flynow was extrodinary looking... free flight I passed troops on the ground running, trucks with dust being thrown up.. headed towards an airfield to land and passed a gorgeous spotter balloon. I landed after being in a rainstorm and then it started to snow. Really beautiful work guys!

No, I used the default install for CFS3 originally, and did the default install location that OFF presents.
I just tried something else.. When I followed the uisel.xml route that got OFF to work, but then made CFS3 not work, I didn't delete it, I renamed it to uisel-cfs3.xml, so...
I just went back, renamed the new uisel.xml in the aps-data CFS3 folder to uisel-off.xml, then renamed the original uisel-cfs3.xml back to uisel.xml
I then started CFS3 and it ran fine and I could fly and I closed the game.
I then started OFF, tried to fly and I get the same missions not found screen.
Maybe it's time I try a clean install, or do you think my dl was corrupted?

I am finally finished with my Christmas concerts. Now I have time for OFF! I am having trouble installing properly so I want to do a clean CFS3 install and back up current. Martin Wright's instructions for CFS3 multi say to copy THE folder. Does this mean only the game folder and NOT the other appdata and mydocs folders? I will try this and proceed. Squiffy, the answer to your folder question is yes. You only have to copy the existing "Combat Flight Simulator 3" folder that is in the Microsoft Games directory within Program Files. The MW Multi-Install tool will guide you through renaming it. It's very important to go through the configuration process and fly some missions in the "clean" install before running the OFF installer. My last clean install was only a few weeks old but had problems on trying it just before plugging in OFF. After an uninstall/reinstall OFF went in with no problems at all.

I downloaded all current OFF files in record time (<16 mins) using a program called 'Free Download Manager'. I then followed the install instructions closely. However, when I try to launch the game from the desktop shortcut, the program begins trying to find a file called 'itsdeductibleex.msi'. I think something was too easy here! :icon_eek: Anybody know what's going on?

Guys there's only 2 or 3 of us around there's zillions of messages across the net, and I need to sleep.
PLEASE CAREFULLY read the FAQ and the documentation. MOST of these problems are addressed. Win98? No idea I haven't used it for best part of 5 years. Someone else with that has problems installing too time to upgrade that 8 year old OS maybe ?
Ekat wtf is 'itsdeductibleex.msi' sounds like a virus or something. please scan your system with AV scanner and spyware scanner like the free spybot.
Hope your free download manager is spyware free ??
KK_Osh as you saw in other threads, someone else had all sorts of errors, tried everything until he re-installed XPSP2 fresh now it works like a charm. It's not all down to OFF. Maybe you need to consider checking out your OS?
"seems none of us getting help anymore.....i know their busy so imbeing patient.-" I've spent most of 2 nights of my time typing a FAQ to help you guys .. not helping??? Nice. :/

i , for one, am very gratefull for all the help, Thanks!!
I might try the complete reinstall of XP after i tried all other things.....
I am now waiting on a English version of cfs3, i think buying the very cheap french version somehow is corrupting things, i got it of e-bay, and think it might be a corrupted original or a very good copy.....
:ernae: I am not giving up, ill get it working, i have copied some of the planes to my regular cfs3 and am amazed by the beauty of them, ooow do i like the camel:icon_lol: :applause: :d

Thanks KK_little_Oishi, hope you get there - I'd say it's worth a little pain to get a WW1 sim working ;). Glad you like the camel. Nod did the superb model, FM is mine.

I have no problem upgrading my OS if needed, but I had no idea it was needed. :costumes: If this isn't compatible with Win 98 perhaps a blurb could be posted somewhere to save people the time. :icon_lol: I still use 98 because for most apps it seems to cause less headaches and why change if not necessary? Now I guess it's necessary! :banghead: Thanks for the suggestion. :applause:

:banghead: Ah...I see the blurb on the main page that it's only been tested with XP. Has anyone else tried it in win98? Any success or failures to report? Looks like I'll be busy over the holidays!:banghead:

After three complete reinstalls (including a new DL of OFF) I still get the "missions failed to load" message.
All steps of installing OFF were said to be succesful.
Initialising of OFF was successful, after that message I clicked the OK button and a "Splash screen " comes up and plays the intro movie, (I had check marked the disable intro movie in the config file) after the movie stops the screen stays there I have to Ctrl-alt-delete to get back to the desk top. Again I click the OFF manager short cut Icon on the desk top and the same thing happens. I deleted the xml file in CFS 3 No joy. In the root directory of OFF I clicked on the "shell.exe" icon and now I get the correct "splash screen" Then when the next (game) screen comes the monitor starts flickering and I get the "mission file failed to load" message. I can click OK and get the pull down menu to exit the game. Red the read me 100000 times and I have everything set as it should be. Can anyone help.
I have installed CFS 1 2 and 3 on the days that they came out I am not new at this, but I don't have a clue as to what's happening.

Awesome, run CFS3 at least once, as per readme.
Now you'll have to remove OFF first before re-install.. See install problems question.. in FAQ

I got all excited about OFF until I saw the size of the d/l. My dial-up ISP would cut me off about 1/10th of the way through. Download mgrs just don't move fast enough. Love WW1 stuff. Any chance of a disk for sale in the future?
~Thanks all~

Pov I just did another clean install of CFS 3 and OFF with same results. Why does my "newly created Icon" take me to a "splash screen" show the intro movie (which I again checked disable in the config file) and when the movie ends the "splash screen" just sits there. WTF?

After my 4th clean install on this machine (winxp sp2) I still have the same problems. Did a new install on my other (winxp sp2) machine and same thing. When I click on the newly created "over Flanders Fields"icon on my desk top Exactly what is supposed to happen? I have spent around 20 hours total trying to get this thing to work. I have on my PC CFS 1,2 and 3, MS Flightsim 2004, Ubisoft Il2 Forgotten Battles Ace Expansion Pack and Ubisoft Pacific Fighters and all work fine. I give up......!!!!! Let me know when OFF comes out on CD as a stand alone program, I don't care what the cost is.

:jump: Finally got to "fly" OFF, had to change my screen DPI to 96
then the opening screen showed the buttons on the bottom but when I enter the game with the OFF manager Icon the game just hangs. I created a Pilot in the main screen but to actually get the game to start up I use the "shell.exe" in the root directory of OFF, now to try multiplayer

Dear OFF team
I have to confess that I tried CFS3 for about 2 days, had all sorts of problems, was very disappointed with all aspects of it, put it back in the box and went back happily to Il-2/Forgotten Battles/Pacific Fighters. When I found there was a Great War sim (and a free one) I hurriedly found CFS3, patched it and downloaded OFF. I could not get on with Combat Aces for CFS2 and have to hark back to Flying Corps Gold for some serious flying with proper aeroplanes. I have had some installation problems as obviously others have too but I must say how impressed I am by what the team has done, all in their spare time too. I am not familiar with CFS3 or its key commands which are taking a bit of time to get used to. I am obviously not a fan of CFS3 but this is a top class add-on to perhaps not the worlds best flight sim. That said I do not mean to damn anybody with faint praise. It is excellent, well researched and well presented. Thus far Lieutenant Nigel Molesworth and his trust Camel are cutting a swathe through the ranks of the wily Hun and I look forward to starting a campaign shortly.
Congratulations and thanks for all your efforts. Further aircraft are eagerly awaited on this aerodrome.
All the best
