View Full Version : If Over Flanders Fields Phase One Runs O.K. Post here:

Winder

Phase 1 of OFF is out - yep :kilroy:.

But given the broader issues associated with deploying relatively complex software on modern PCs I would like all users who have managed to get OFF up and running to simply show your hand here.

Please do not post problems or issues here - we will make a separate thread for that - all I want is a show of hands of people who have successfully installed OFF and have it running.

OFF is freeware but still we are commited to helping everyone get it installed and working.

Was probably among the first to dl.
Had to manually initialize after both the big install and the patch, other than that it was a charm..

And I've spent two hours now in quick missions :ernae: :applause: :applause: :applause:

Well mines working ;)

Some entertainment to pass the downloading blues...

Tonight just flew a campaign mission to test again 
BTW I do recommend this, and try not to use the ‘radar’ aid too much - it makes it a very risky game not to check your six ;)

RNAS8 March 1917.

On a sunny but partially cloudy day myself and my wingman took our Nieuport 17’s to attack an airfield about 25 miles due east of our base.
We passed a few flights of unidentified aircraft on the way, without investigating or engaging.

Checking the map we finally saw the base ahead, diving gently to avoid stress on the Nieup we began the attack. As I opened fire fierce ground fire returned at me from 3 gun positions cutting into the wings and fuselage. As I pulled away quickly remembering the fragility of my craft, I noticed 4 trucks escaping heading for the nearby forest. I started to strafe them when suddenly 4 Albatros DII’s dropped on us from nowhere. My wingman was busy with 2 on his tail and two came after me. After losing one on my tail at the expense of some permanent stress damage!, I managed to get onto the tail of one, a few 100 rounds later already flying low he crashed into the ground. I saw my wingman with a DII shooting chunks out of him so changed course head–on to the DII attacking him.

A head on pass, bullet hits exchanged, he came off worst. Unfortunately my wingman was already heading for the trees on fire.
Looking at my fuel 38% wasn’t a great discovery! I was half way through my mission with less than half my fuel.. hadn’t flown that far had I? Nope it was a fuel leak aaahh. So immediately disengaged and headed for our side of the lines low across the trees. One of the other DII’s gave chase I could see him about a mile back slowly gaining. The enemy caught me up, and just as he opened fire an ace in covering flight with wingman turned up heading towards me above, they zoomed passed diving onto the DII both planes with guns blazing. Excellent I thought, “cavalry!”. .. then splut splut the fuel run out. Luckily I managed to land in a field surrounded by trees. Luckily I must have escaped capture. Great mission.

OFF Slider settings for terrain and scenery are two notches better than standard CFS3.

So to get similar FPS as before, lower the Scenery Detail and Terrain Detail sliders by two notches.

However even then OFF will consume more CPU power than normal CFS3 as it has much more happening in the environ - you get nothing for nothing.

OK, finally... I'm good :wavey:

I had a problem that caused the "missions not found" to pop up every time I tried to fly. It wasn't the language selection and you would have to read my posts to follow along. It may have been a bad corupted dl of the multi 16 part install. It may have also been my Norton AV, set to stay off for 15 minutes, restartintg during the OFF install Don't know for sure, but OFF and CFS3 both work fine now.

I did a dl again, of the complete mod and the patch.
I removed the OFF folders and then uninstalled CFS3
Deleted all left over folders in Programs and in the user-name\appliction data areas.
rebooted and did a MS cleanup and a registry clean
ran defrag
Created a Windows XP restore point
Installed CFS3 and the 3.1 patch and created a pilot and flew
Did another Windows XP restore point
Turned off my Norton AV and set it to stay off for five hours :kilroy:
Did the OFF install per instructions
Created and configured OFF config file
Everythning is working beautifully now. :ernae:

Renamed cfsconfig in the OFF folder so I could send it to the desktop as a shortcut, so I can keep different tweaks for OFF vs standard CFS3.

By the way: I have Firepower installed and it does not seem to be an issue.

BUT.....I've only had time for a short flight in the SE 5a.....popped a spotter balloon with only a quick burst, drifeted back to base and the 5a landed sweet as a nut. Now how do I sneak home early??

Some small install issues mainly due to my original CFS3 setup but as usual the community had all the right answers before I even asked the questions.

It now runs great except for the issue of lock up if you select multiplayer. But this is not the thread for this.

OFF Team - Thank you very much. I have not had so much fun with a sim for YEARS. Am I doing 'full real' (Whatever that is) - No. Am I enjoying myself - YES!

Terrific! Absolutely fabolous! Even though i got so much trouble i had to reinstall windows xp only to play this game.. uhm. sorry.. MOD???! i would call it a game! Yeah as i said, alot of trouble, but i thank you OFF guys for that, i learned a heap about dll`s and visual basic that way!

It`s the best ww1 game.. sorry.. MOD!?? I ever played, and i love the confirm a kill system. It just makes it more real!

The only thing I can complain about in this game, and its not even a big deal. Is the enormous tracer rounds coming from your guns, while you see none coming from enemy. Exept that, nothing at all! Great stuff! great stuff!
Ive been longing for this kinnda g.. MOD! For so many years!

Forexample, I was on a"search for any target of opportunities" mission, and i see 3 Bristal F.E.2s, I hurry up and gain alltitude with my trusty Albatross D.III, and then dive right onem from behind, looking through the sights of my Spandau`s I aimed at the one in the middle. then opened fire. at close range... I just heard my bullets hit the plane like: THUD THUD THUD, and i go past it and i see the plane looks like a switzer cheese! and then their engine starts to burn, and the flames are absolutely fabolous btw! Then the enemy bomber plunges into the earth with the best explosion i ever seen in a ww1 sim game... MOD! , then i go right after the two remaining bombers.. only to discover that a wing of 3 S.E.5.a`s are coming in from above! And they had Viper engines! So i had to decide.. attack the bombers again, and have a great risk being shot down.. or get the heck outta there!

I just thought about my burning albatross plunge to the earth...
Then I thought about the kill list! The victories! The glory! Promotion! THE POUR LE MERITE! any man that has that medal will be respected!

So I decided. And went right on them.. peppered the pilot cockpit of one of the fe`s and i just heard the plane going down behind me, just like in old flying movies. Then I go right for the SE5.a`s, i aim for the middle one in their wedge formation going right for me, they fire too soon, i waited, till i was at 100m range, and peppered the middle se5 so much i could almost hear the pilot scream when his plane started burning and he crashed to the ground... Then I go straight ahead, and wait for the two se5as to catch up with me.. then i fly upside down, then level the plane as i get right behind the left se5a"and im upside down" and peppered his fuel tank and engine.. he burns and goes down..
Then I correct the plane, and the other one tryes to shake me off. but that ends when he tryes to get the stall in a loop... he was too far away from me... so i managed to aim properly before i fired.. he went down with a peppered aileron... I bet he screamed in agony the 10000 feets down to the earth.. I just heard: KNACK! when his wings breaked off, then i just heard: pam..., very low, the whole pam sound came from my bass, so it was like: PFFFRRRHH...

I saw a squadron of camels coming from the east.. but they didnt catch me up as i went straight for aerodrome..
then i went to the mess and :ernae:
5 unconfirmed in one mission!

So I just want to send my best regards to OFF team! If they distribute this game, with international compatibility, and not so many bugs,"no offense guys! :)" I would buy it!! NICELY DONE OFF DEV TEAM!

Salute!

Up and running - no problems at all with the install!!! I have run a few QC missions and had no problems exiting the shell or OFF manager.

This is great WM and team. Having been watching and waiting all this time has made OFF an even more enjoyable experience. And I thought the original WM scenery manager was awesome, but this is incredible. :costumes:

Another happy camper here - even after a horrible experience with the download (I blew 600MB only to find there was an unfixable error and the zip file would never, ever unzip). Fortunately Grinseed was nice to me and sent me a copy in the mail.

Followed the installation instructions on a clean CFS3 and i had not one single problem - was able to launch into Quick Combat within a few minutes. Looking forward to giving missions and a campaign a try out shortly.

Well done to all at OFF - the detail is incredible, although I think you might have missed a couple of trees LOL.

Stayed up till 2 a.m.! Already had an awesome thing happen! Flying low on a scramble I pulled up on a D-II, lost control, said my prayers. Amazingly, though I had already written this pilot off in my mind, I pulled out. Quickly I toggled to an external view to check for damage there I saw my right tire spinning. After I landed I promptly changed my pants and OFF I go again!

One odd thing with first install was that it said the install was complete, did I want to restart computer. I declined, and then noticed that there was still another install window active. I terminated that one assuming that install was complete and ruined the install

put another nocd .exe in your off folder renamed to shell

Downloaded in about 40 minutes or so. Install did not work. It extracted everything into the OFFData folder, but then the installer that sets everything up stopped at 6%.

Not to worry, I moved the OFFData folder out of the OFF game folder, then cut its contents and pasted it back into the OFF game folder.

The OFF Manager thinks the auto install didn't work, which is correct, and it wont let me do anything, but I can launch it all just like CFS3. I copeid the OFF movie over the CFS3 movie so it plays when I launch.

I have been doing quick combat and its totally killer. The ambiance is just too much. Plus I like the machine gun sounds.

I consider this working BTW. Its a neat mod to say the least. Thanks to all.

December 22nd, 2005, 06:49
Oh, just thought I would mention. To make it work the way I have it you must NOT cut and paste the Dialog folder (from the OffData folder). If you do this, then you dont get the quick combat menu tab or the campaign tab.

Next month when I get back, I will try the intall again and see what happens. I just wanted to download it to check it out since you guys have worked on it for so long.

But congrats, what I have seen is very nice. And whats even more fun, is you can paste the entire OFFData assets folder into your regular CFS3 folder (you know the one where the old WWII planes are, remember?), and voila, its an OFF environment for them too. Now that was a 2 click install!

I don't have that much time to play. I mean see my age. If you guys spent as much time on the stock market as you do with this game, well, you get the drift!

But thanks again for the totally cool mod. WM is a very talented person.

Hello OFF team!

Pff, finally managed to install and get in the game! :applause:

Install hanged at 6%. I renamed all CFS3 folders and installed a new CFS3 at a different drive. Install stopped with CD2 at the terrains mos and msh files. Ignored that and copied those files over from my stock CFS3.
Shows you the need for the use of the "unmentionable"...

Loaded it up at 800/600 to check it. Holy crap! How aweful.
No wonder CFS3 was received so badly initially. What is worse, it played choppier than my "pimped" high-res standard CFS3.
Hmm not looking good.

Then install went smoothly. OK now I am getting somewhere.

Went in the overrides to do some tweaking. Selected pilot and clicked Hangar. Destination path missing to the assets. Now what. :isadizzy:

Oh need to initialise in the workshop. Yeah I am in!
Terrain corrupted. Need to get some AA in, that should fix it (ATI 9800 Pro)
Indeed it did.
Happy smooth flying now! 30 fps and no stutter!
Checking out the lovely scenery and new effects. Great stuff.

I deleted the fresh install of CFS3 and its subfolders and renamed the old ones back to their original names, and my old CFS3 is back again as well!

Thank you all for this wonderful free gift. :wavey:

well thanks to my ridiculously slow dialup connection i finally got it last night!
installation went absolutely 100% no probs at all, which is amazing since my cfs3 is royally bugged and nothing seems to work with it.

first campaign attempt in a spad, took down an obs balloon and copped a flak shell right in the engine, instant death... now im being a little too careful perhaps...6 missions complete and only one kill...please dont make it harder!

absolute 5 stars from me, cant believe theres finally a sim that achieves immersion and atmosphere. the frotnlines are AMAZING

top stuff, thankyou OFF guys

Well - I´m up and flying in OFF. What a beutifull add-on. I like the stick & string period of flying.

And I must say a BIG THANKS to all off your team.

I do as follow:

1) A clean install off CFS3 G:\Program\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulation 3. (Note: No CFS 3, edit the full name).

2) Patch 3.1 and 3.1a

3) Configurate cfs3, custom resolution 1024x768-32 I have a LCD monitor whit default 1280x1024-32 60Hz and DVI connection.

4) Run the cfs3 a couple off time.

5) Install OFF in G:\Program\Microsoft Games\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields.

6) Install Patch 0.31 , 0.32 , 0.33 & 0.33a

7) Put the runtime fix and Scrrun in System 32 and register both. Reboot.

Start the OFF, Edit pilot. Go to Quick Flight.

Have a error: Can´t find atumnlight etc. erease and do a new install .

Oh no, I think, no more time.

Activate workshop and click on manual install, wait untill finish.

The game start with the intro movie and after that I go back to Quick Flight.

And now, the game lounched OK and I have my first fligh.

What an INCREDIBLE mod! Had trouble at first - the new version of CFS3 was 3.0, not 3.1 so OFF wouldn't initialize or anything! After I pulled my head out of the - sand - patched CFS3 to 3.1, OFF installed and ran without a hitch!

Absolutely top notch sim. I'd say top notch mod.. but this is clearly more than that. CFS3 is gone, OFF has taken it's place... it's that big a leap. Awesome stuff.

Install went flawlessly, though as expected I had some frame rate problems at the outset. I had them any time I installed plain jane CFS3 too however. I tried the tweaks available here at sim-outhouse.com and things improved but it was when I went through the suggestions in this thread (http://www.com-central.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=118) that everything gelled perfectly.

OFF now runs perfectly smoothly at a steady 25fps (max limited) at 1280x960 and graphics set to mostly 4's (clouds at 3 I think) without any problem at all. No stutters or anything, it's just golden. This is on a P4, 2.8ghz system with 1.5gb ram and an old ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. If you're having problems with frame rates, I'd go through that thread... though be warned just because it helped me so much doesn't mean it will help you. You know how computers are, and all I can comment on is my experience. Yours may vary.

I'm very impressed with the work that's gone into this sim, and highly recommend it for anyone looking for the defacto leader in WWI aviation simulation.

Great stuff WM--getting 50-60 frame rates--only problem is trying to try out multiplay(all mismatches)-and if I host nobody can join.Got 18 planes in the allied list and 9 in the german list--that sound right?and patched to 0.35 + the online fix.
BTW those frame rates are with all sliders on 3,except Effects(5)
Cheers ,hope you had a rest over the holiday :-)

No problems with all installs, flys great!!

fps 19+ over towns/forests, usually 22-30 with everything else.
Shadows, AA 'off' and graphics set low on 2, terrain/sky on 1.

Specs for my old PC ~
winXP SP2
AMD 2000XP
512DDR
ASUS Ti4200 Ge4 128M card with nVidia 77.72 driver.

Not bleeding edge technology, bloody old, but
I'm fortunately not getting any of the problems others are with their latest rigs, damned if I know how or why.
Other sims that I have on my HD without problems are~
WoV BoB2, Silent Hunter III, TCBR to name a few.

Downloads worked perfectly. Original install in Win2K was dodgey and took a lot of cludging, tweaking and massaging as well as the no cd patch (I believe all were CFS3 issues). Upgraded to WinXP and all was smooth as silk.

Just a note to let you know that OFF is the most fun I've had with a flight sim since Rb3D. Again kudos to all who had a hand in this fantastic work, I am waiting for the super patch now. :applause:

Hi Superpatch works fine, but my FPS have gone from 20 to 8 on the same settings as last patch.

I will have to put all the sliders on 1 now and see how that goes tonight. the stock CS3 that I OFF use to install from gives me 20 + FPS will all sliders appar fom clouds on 4.

My PC:
P4 3.2
1 gig memory running at dual channel
NVidea 6800 GT.

If stage 2 needs more over heads I will be dead in the water. Why the extra over head? as the gaphics do not look that better than stock to reduce my PS by 2/3.

I still get the blocky rendered screen when returning to the officers mess from mision screens. But it clears / renders properly in a few seconds so it is not too bad. any oneelse having this problem, or just me?

Hopefully I will be able to tweak it nough to fly tonight. I have tweaked the over rides as per readme and past recomendations.

I really like OFF, my only concern is the over heads compared with stock CFS3.

Cheers MarkL

(PS I would love the pilot selection screen to work like CFS3 but I know I am in the minority there. I still much it up fist time every go. Should have learn't by no. Must be a slow learner)

Though I'm VERY new to CFS3, no problems here. Had the No-Cd patch for CFS 3.1, it was easy to rename the CFS3 file to "shell.exe". Nice job on OFF, by the way.

Slightly delayed raising of hand!!

I had been unable to load, but an enforced disc reformat and fresh install of CFS3 fixed the issue.

Well done guys, btw marklaur did you run cfs3config from the OFF main folder? Answer me in another thread.
Something you should do and might help fix your fps. Also check what else changed on your system could be something else you installed or changed.

After I read the instructions OFF installed and plays great. The one problem that I had (I am not real knowledgable when it comes to these things) was that I did not realize that I had to upgrade CFS3 to version 3.1. Once I figured out what you meant everything went great. You guys deserve a big round of applause because OFF is really great! Thanks
