Wildbat : prob best to use a download manager like getright so you can resume?

Redwolf "Did you guys consider putting it on a torrent or on a newsgroup?"

Yes not done at moment we didn't want corrupt copies etc flying around- we'll see how it goes.

we also have a mirror in Auz that could be up in the next day or so.

Cool - doesn't it resume then? Might be worth a look. I use getright myself pertty useful especially for huge downloads like this. You can also add mirrors in to the download to split the download between sites.

Thanks for the offer of the mirror I am sure it would help - it's up to WM. Mind you I just tried starting a test download from my site and it was coming down over 100k/s so it's not overloaded yet !
I think more people need to use the mirrors should be fine - and there's always another day ;)

Had a slight hiccup where OFF upon launching came up with the error: MSSTDFMT.DLL is missing and could not launch. I installed the VB6 runtime and followed the read me doc but still no go.

Downloaded the required .dll from the web, dropped it in my system32 folder in Windows and ran the command: regsvr32.exe msstdfmt.dll in the run command window. Installed successfully and OFF launches now.

Something to do with MS Visual Studio? Anyways just pointing it out if anyone else comes up against the problem. ;)

Free Download Manager works great for me. Give it a go. It works in Firefox too which is what I use.

Yes this is an issue that is quite common on many instances of OS installation these days - incomplete VB runtime components.

I have highlighted this issue in the read.me documentation and how to fix.

I need to figure out the pilot thing --
about the third time through I got a couple pilot defined --
but I am having trouble with selection part . . . .

Anyway --
it unzipped clean
installed -- about 15 minutes
Flanders installed -- another 15 minutes
Got the patch inInitialized clean

got the movie, music, menu . . .
but I am a tad confused and hung on getting an "active" pilot --
but assume, given it was a clean install, that it is only a matter of getting past the learing curve.

Onward and (soon) upward!!!

Well done Aelave this is what people should be doing.. no point downloading 600MB on a wing and prayer.. then losing the connection at 599MB when the website is clobbered.

Use a decent download manager like Getright and just resume where you left off and also you can "split" the file download between 4 or more sites.

Easy peasy.

Redwolf
December 17th, 2005, 15:58
Darn, my connection pooped out in the process after 4 hours worth of download...now can't get over 10 kbps on any link...arrrggghhh...

Seriously guys, consider dumping it to a newsgroup (maybe alt.binaries.flightsims or alt.binaries.freeware). It won't be bandwidth dependant then and highspeeders should be able to download at 150 kbps or better regardless of who else or how many are downloading.

...but I'm happy to wait all day and night if I need to downloading off of the current mirrors, just hope I don't get bumped off cause of numbers in the process...

The readme explains the pilot bit. Just create a pilot, then use the "Change/Select Active Pilot" to make him the active pilot.

Basically you need an active pilot cos if he dies in a QC or single mission he's dead (unless you get lucky and it turns out to be hospitalised of course).

The install seems to be running fine now. I just had my first Campaign mission with the French flying a Nieuport 17. You guys have done a really great job with this.

I'm sure many will be finding out all the good things your crew has made with OFF. I just wanted to emphasis the effort that was put into the frontlines. They are truly alive. Above the din of the engine I heard loud booms as I ventured towards the lines on a recon mission. Great I thought, nice touch. Then I saw explosions, all over the front. Completely chaotic and actually instinctively made me climb higher in fear.

I could not help myself after I saw some lower circling Entente planes and had to venture down to get a good look. Suddenly, an mg nest is ripping apart my plane! Trading bullets back at them, they found their mark. Another foolhardy novice pilot plunges into the mud.

My great flight career and dreams of grandeur...

1/1/1917 8h15 Flanders Cachy Reconnaisance Nieuport 17 Died in the line of duty. Flying time 38.4 minutes

It really hits home when you see your deceased pilot it in the briefing. I can start to understand a little more why just surviving day to day was heroic in itself.

This is Red baron level campaign design here. Well thought out and totally unforgiving. The OFF crew should be commended for striving for a truly engrossing experience. I've just scratched the surface and can't wait to get another poor pilot into the air. ;)

Well done.
