Every time I convince myself that I have enough aircraft, I don't have time to fly all of them.

Yet every time something like this pops up and I just need to have it.

Just one request...can the speculars be mapped per part like the diffuse is, instead of a generic exterior texture for everything?

Can't wait! Again, good for you for picking this one up...a true classic and completely neglected aircraft in FS.

Yes exactly. I've Been watching it recently on Netflix and really hoped that someone woukd take it on. That's the reason I'm requesting the specs be mapped and not just a generic one. You can't make believable aluminum without custom specs....

The C-46 Tinker Belle makes a yearly appearance at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum. It would be nice to have a paint of it. For the past two years a WWII Parachute Demonstration Team (can't remember the team's official name) did drops. Something to see. So of course it follows to have a parachutist effect.

On another note, the P-61 that they pulled off Mount Cyclops near Hollandia is nearing completion. Last year it was up on three wheels, engines and props, tail booms and empanage, radome in place. Needs wings and I don't know about the interior. Can't wait to see it fly.

Here is a link to the restoration page:http://www.maam.org/p61/p61_rest.htm

I will have to look through my pictures from last year and see if I can find a shot of what they have done so far.

I've seen Tinker Belle in person 3 times now. A beautiful aircraft! Incidentally my late Father got to fly on a C-46 during his time in the Air Force (he also got to fly on a C-47, C-54, and C-124). Seeing a C-46 up close for the first time was impressive (the size and power of the aircraft). Here's a good video of Tinker Belle on a takeoff run which the sight & sound should fuel even more excitement about the AH model.

Chris,

There are some freeware paratrooper effect files that are installed as smoke effects in flyable aircraft like this one where you can drop them wherever you like.

I've only used one in FS9 AI cargo aircraft as a light effect where it takes a bit of tinkering with the timing to get the paratroopers to drop when you want them to.

A native C-46 has been MIA in FSX for way too long, so I am especially looking forward to flying this important aircraft. The Curtiss Commando contributed much to the war effort in the China-Burma-India Theater. And since AH has done such a fine job on the Helldiver, I know the Commando will be another winner. Now those flights over the Hump will finally be flown in a proper mount...excellent!

Here is a plate depicting the C-46 from William Koenig's book "Over the Hump Airlift to China".

:biggrin-new: Good one.

Hopefully the devs are watching plenty of Ice Pilots to gather some info regarding the flight model. They talk plenty about it on the show, and call it the most difficult aircraft to fly, especially landing in a crosswind.

Really looking forward to the Commando!

Not an easy aeroplane to fly at all. The original flight manuals and maintenance documents are a real eye-opener. Happily we have an "Ice Pilot" on board who will be advising us as we get into the hard stuff.:engel016:

BuNo 39507 was first assigned USAAF S/N42-23758 (C/N26593) but was one of about 40 C-46As completed with BuAer numbers, as R5C-ls for the US Marine Corps, serving at first with MAG-35 in the south-west Pacific during WWII. She was later transferred to the US Navy and assigned to NAS Corpus Christi and it during this time in 1953 that she served as the Blue Angels support aircraft.

I had the chance to know a CBI pilot who flew them over the Hump - he has passed maybe 10 years ago now. He talked about this plane quite often - as well as the T6, the Vultee vibrator and the DC3...I think he flew the C117 also. I'm not sure how many different types he flew - I don't think HE knew..but he really loved the C46. We saw one at Gillespie Field in 2003 I think - John showed the aircraft's pilot his CBI theater card (AGO?) and the reaction was great.."you wanna taxi it around? you still certified? you can go ahead and fly it!" Colonel Dorn was 80? years old at the time and still in good shape but he was no longer licensed to fly. That was a good day for him. Lots of PT17, a Staggerwing, the Commando. couple of C47's and T6's on the flight line. We would go to the SDASM often and they have a DC3 cockpit on the floor that you can almost climb into the seats of...he says the damn windscreen was useless in the rain - water just poured in around the seals. It's too bad he wont see this version of his old friend but I will fly it over the Hump just to see what that was like, in his honor.
John Dorn spent his life flying - lying about his age to get into the war, taking the CAMCO offer as a transport pilot - he flew the Hump for the duration, flew in Korea too - he flew President Lyndon Johnson around as the right seater on an AF1 crew and later was a corporate pilot for James Copley who owned the San Diego Union and Tribune before he passed years ago.
John was a quiet, modest guy that rarely talked about his career in the military - just the flying itself. I miss those talks - no one could tell a good flying story like my old friend John. RiP
