View Full Version : OT...Flight Simulator sponsored ads popping up here?

I guess a better title for this thread might be Flight Simulator related ads are popping up he Really!

45393

I just started getting FS type ad banners popping up on the bottom of my screen. It happens every time I click on a new topic or thread. This is on my iPad which doesn't allow random pop ups in browser. This is only happening with SOH.

Has my, iPad OS been had or is SOH now doing this. Honest question here, not an accusation, so please, no snide remarks.

Thanks

Same for me on my iPad. It just started tonight and, whilst you can temporarily cancel them, they come back every time you move around the forum. Very annoying and, if deliberate, a bad idea as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for the responses guys. My started just before I posted above and it is only affecting this web site. I hope the SOH is not doing this. It may have been infected by someones link in a thread. I clicked on a couple of sale links f on threads today. According to my search so far it appears to be some kind business spam that has been associated with Yahoo.

I hope someone comes up with a way get rid of it!

Well, I've changed to Firefox for iPad and I've changed my password here but still get this extremely annoying pop up banner at bottom of page. It can be turned off but returns immediately when you change pages or forums or anything that requires a button push within the SOH site. It followed me here to this response page.

SOH is the only site doing this and, so far, all the pop adds are flight sim related.

Would love to see an admin comment re this problem

Duckie,

It might be malware which causes this at your side, as I don't have any similar pop-ups (I've checked both, my desktop and smart phone). If you are unable to remove them, you perhaps can suppress them with add blocker.

Success, as I know it can be very annoying to sort things like this out.

Might be an idea to check the latest installations on the device, even if you haven't done any. I had a similar problem with FSDeveloper 2 years back, then I encountered some unwanted software being installed just before I opened my browser, something like that. Uninstalled it and it's gone.

I had a similar ad/malware occurrence a while back, which somehow affected Chrome. The only solution was to do a full uninstall and reinstall. The one I encountered was slightly different, ads would show up when you hovered over certain words in a forum's normal text. Strange thing was that only occurred in certain forums also. I discovered it using the FS Developer forum, and it was only there and on Avsim from memory. I uninstalled Chrome on my PC and phone, cleared everything with CCleaner, and then reinstalled. It was fine after that.

I have not yet noticed anything regarding this latest trouble.

Here is the post I started at FS Developer at the time:

when i run the right click code pm to me I get this

Unfortunately, according to what I've found on the web, this malware constantly changes its address so no one has been able to open its location. Also according to the web it is associated with a site called media.net and is distributed by Yahoo and Bing which I don't use and no accounts with either. It has a reputation for being a particularly nasty app that makes $$ for the pushers each time the banner appears.

As I stated earlier, it is only appearing on SOH. So far, it seems to have only infected some of us who use mobile devices to access SOH from time to time. I'm no PC guru, but I believe I got this by clicking on a link in the sale thread. That, of course, is no fault of SOH. And the person posting the link probably didn't know it was infected. And, so far, my PC has not been affected. As a precaution I will not click any 3rd party links here going forward until its been determined where this came from and how to get rid of it.

Still researching. Any and all help in resolving this is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Another thing: i use AdBlocker here in all my browsers. People can test it too if it helps to make this thing go away.

Thanks Lawman, but, unfortunately, that doesn't work for me. I keep java script turned off with my iPad and just verified it is still off but the pup-ups are still on!

It's looking more and more like I will have to do a total reset since Apple is in denial about their systems being vulnerable to malware, and my search online so far has turned up nada about how to deal with this. It is recognized to exist. Found several iPad users requesting help from Apple support and forum, but they were met with scepticism and sarcasm because iPads DON'T GET VIRUSES OR MALWARE!

OK, Lawman, and Sundog, I revisited your fix and it worked. I had to recycled my java button on-off and restarted Safari and the banners were gone. Turned Java back on and the banners were back. Now if Java will issue an update to address this hack it will be good.

If this changes I'll post it here.

Thanks, Dave. I'm not sure that can be done with iPad iOS. According to what I've read on the Apple support forum Apple has to issue an iOS update with the pertinent Java updates.

I tried uninstalling Chrome, but I could only uninstall updates, not the whole thing. I downloaded an anti malware app and scanned my phone, but nothing was found. I then reinstalled Chrome updates and turned my phone off then on, but the ads were still there. I then went to settings and disabled java script and that got rid of the ads but also changed the way google searched. I am happy with that method though as I can still use Chrome and the ads are gone.

The adds have arrived at my android phone as well. However only on the SOH pages and when I open the SOH and the add pops-up it starts with a general add. After switching pages it only shows Flightsim related adds.
There are a few things weird. In my experience malware pops-up at any site once your infected. In this case it is one stuck to the SOH. It is also a bit weird that it can't "remember" previously visited sites and that it starts with a general one and only switches to Flight sim related add after the first page.

Haven't been able to find how the clear Java on my android phone....

Hi Rami,

I have iPhine too but I don't do any web surfing on it. My inflection exists on my iPad which is essentially the same in this respect to iPhone. For a work around you can go into Settings, Safari, Advanced, and turn JavaScript to OFF. That should work for SOH. However, if you visit other sites that require JavaScript they may not work properly or even open. I've had this happen to me on my iPad.

I sure hope the brain trust here can figure this out.

According to want I've read Android does not use pure Java coding but rather a derivative of Java which may be close enough to allow this bug to infect devices of a certain version of this derivative. Obviously Androids are also susceptible to this critter that's taken hold of us.

Tonight, 18:55 EST, 12/28/16, started getting the same pop-up banner in the Warbirds Library. When I open a category, click on any Addon, then click on "discussion thread", the blue flight sim related banner pops up at the bottom of the page. It seems to have the same characteristics as before. You can turn it off by clicking the X on the banner but it returns the next time you click on a discussion thread. I tried several catagories and subjects at random and got the same response with the banners.

So, far this only happens with my iPad.

It wasn't doing it on my PC, only the iPad, and I don't surf with my iPhone. Last time it seemed to only affect mobile devices, both Apple/iOS and Android. The culprit or back door seemed to be using JavaScript.
