It's not Boxer, Zolt, it's Al Webers Tarawa class static assembled as an AI ship. The stern gate wouldn't work, so I set up a number of models in different cfg's- gate closed under weigh, gate open in wet deck and dry deck. And, it's free. I'd posted the link a while back when somebody else asked a similar question, but; being sent to coventry and all, it sank with out a trace. No screens available from here, but it's a damned nice model, given it's age.

Isn't the USS Boxer LHD-4 part of Aerosoft's Seahawk and Jayhawk package (one of six ships included)?

Zsolt, have a look here: http://deltasimstudio.com/lhd.htm

It includes an AI version as well, though you can easily add all of them to AICarriers.

You can make the text up easy Zolt..

[formation.XX]
title=USS Boxer
unit.0=Shipname, 0, 0

Just open the sim.cfg of the model and copy the title= name where I've put Shipname above. Make sure you number the formation to the next consecutive number;)

Can't think of any good reason why that shouldn't work. Point me to the model and I'll make one for you. I have an LHA-4 but not an LHD-4 so I'm not sure if we're looking at the same model.

Zsolt..

If you're using the model in the link Lazarus posted.. this is what the sim.cfg looks like:

[fltsim.0]
title=USS_LHA_1_Tarawa
model=
texture=

[fltsim.1]
title=USS_LHA_2_Saipan
model=1
texture=

[fltsim.2]
title=USS_LHA_3_Beleau_Wood
model=2
texture=

[fltsim.3]
title=USS_LHA_4_Nassau
model=3
texture=

[fltsim.4]
title=USS_LHA_5_Peleliu
model=4
texture=

To make an entry for AIC.. you need a formation line, a title line and the name of the ship (a unit line). For example.. if you're using these models and want USS Tarawa to show in AIC.. you'd make the following entry:

[formation.xx] (next consecutive number)
title=USS Tarawa (this could be anything)
unit.0=USS_LHA_1_Tarawa, 0, 0 (the name on this line has to be EXACTLY the same as listed in the models sim.cfg)

Hope this helps

Can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I THINK I made the .cfg files correctly, and installed same into AIC. But not showing up.

Any advice? NC

Actually, during my initial testing (even though I couldn't get the Tarawa package to show up) I DID manage to land on the Patuxent. It was my first attempt at a helo landing on anything other than a carrier!

Post your AIC entry for the Tarawa ships so I can see if there's anything obvious.

I did a quick cut'n'shut paint job on Patuxent to add Yukon. You can get it HERE (http://daveb.cbfsim.org/public/ao202_yukon.zip) if you're interested;)

Something has always confused me about the .cfg files for the ships. For example, there is a sim.cfg file included with the Tarawa file. But I am supposed to make a separate, modded .cfg file for my AIC? Confusing.

My AIC folder has a subfolder called, "conf.d". That is where I have the .cfg files for the various ship installs I have. But not sure how to do this one. :dizzy: NC

Here is the contents of the config.d folder:

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=44820&stc=1

And the sim.cfg file itself: not sure how to mod it?

Okey doh mate.

The sim.cfg I included with the Yukon paint is designed to take the place of the original Patuxent sim.cfg. You still have everything you had with the original and exactly the same for Yukon. The basic entries (USNS_Patuxent and USNS_Yukon) give you the ships in normal steaming mode. The 'unrep' entries are the models with underway replenishment hoses out on the port side. This tanker is setup to match USS Nimitz in unrep and while it can be used with other big ships.. the hoses and lines may not go to the right place.

The way I use the conf.d file is that I put all my formations there. It's possible to make up 'period' cvn_id files then rename them when you don't want that selection anymore but I choose to have everything in one big file. My cvn_id file currently has some 96 formations!!!

Forgive me if I'm trying to teach my granny to suck eggs but this is how I go about it:
Double click on the conf.d folder to open it then double click on the cvn_id file. This will show all the standard AIC formations plus the ones added with the Nimitz/Ike/Patuxent install. To add more ships/formations (they're all formations even if they're a single ship).. just go to the bottom of the list and add (for example) one of the Tarawa ships (you can copy and paste if an AIC cfg is included in the set) then renumber the new entries to run consecutive. Here's the tail-end of my cvn_id.cfg to show you what I mean...

[formation.91]
title=Convoy2
unit.0=HMS_Furious_1942_X, 0, 0
unit.1=GC_BritishTankerX, 0, 800
unit.2=ai_victory, 0, -800
unit.3=ai_victory, 0, 1600
unit.4=GC_BritishTankerX1, 0, -1600
unit.5=ai_victory, 800, 0
unit.6=ai_victory, 800, 800
unit.7=ai_victory, 800, -800
unit.8=AI_Saugatuck_Unarmed, 800, 1600

unit.27=HMS_C_class_DD_1944, 2400, 0
unit.28=HMS_C_class_DD_1944, -2400, 0

[formation.92]
title=HMS Campania
unit.0=HMS_Campania_LODX, 0, 0

[formation.93]
title=HMS Centaur
unit.0=HMS Centaur, 0, 0

[formation.94]
title=Hermes 82 TG
unit.0=HMS Hermes JUMPFX, -400, 400
unit.1=HMS Fearless, 400, 400
unit.2=HMS Glamorgan, 0, 1200
unit.3=Leander, 1200, 0
unit.4=RFA Green Rover, 0, 0
unit.5=Falmouth, -1200, 0
unit.6=AI_T2_RFA, 400, -400
unit.7=Penelope, -400, -400
unit.8=Cleopatra, 0, -1200

[formation.95]
title=Capsize
unit.0=VEH_water_capsized_sm, 0, 0

[formation.96]
title=Cavour
unit.0=AI_Cavour, 0, 0

[formation.97]
title=USS Tarawa
unit.0=USS_LHA_1_Tarawa, 0, 0

When finished, save the cvn_id.cfg and close the folder. Next time you open AIC.. keep clicking 'next page' in AIC until you come to USS Tarawa. Select that and it should appear in front of you at whatever distance you chose;)

You can call the title= line anything you want. If you have a lot of ships in the formation and they're for use in the Pacific.. you could make it title=Pacific Amphibious fleet.. whatever.. it doesn't matter. The thing that DOES matter is the name you put in the unit.0= line. That must be EXACTLY the same as the title= line in the ships sim.cfg. If even ONE character is wrong.. the ship will not display and you'll get an error message saying it failed to load.
The numbers after mean little with a single ship but they must be there even if they're zero's. The first number is left/right of the datum and the second number is ahead or behind the datum.

As an example, here's an entry for Nimitz Unrep..
[formation.2]
title=USS Nimitz (CVN68) Underway Replenishment (UNREP) // The title of the formation
unit.0=CVN68_7, 0, 0 // The unit at the middle of the formation
unit.1=USNS_PATUXENT_UNREP, 102, -50 // , 102, -50 shows that Patuxent is 102ft to the right of Nimitz and -50 shows it's 50ft behind Nimitz centre position
unit.2=SH-60_guard, 350, -220 // This shows an SH-60 guard helo 350ft to the right of Nimitz and -220 shows it's 220ft behind Nimitz centre position
unit.3=SH-60_guard, 150, -80 // Another guard helo.. 150 shows it's 150ft to the right and -80 shows it being 80 behind Nimitz centre position

A minus indicated in the first number puts a unit to the LEFT of the lead ship (Nimitz in this case) and any second number without a minus will put it ahead of, in this case, Nimitz.
So.. a positive first number means to the RIGHT, a minus first number means to the LEFT. A positive second number means ahead of the lead ship and a minus means behind.

An easy way to get your head around this is to call up a simple formation in the sim then open the cvn_id.cfg to see how it is listed. Once you've got your head around it, formations like my Convoy above become possible. My largest formation is an extended Falklands Task Force. This took rather longer a few minutes to knock up!!!

unit.37=AI_T2_RFA, -1500, 800
unit.38=AI_T2_RFA, 1500, 800

I began with HMS Fearless, 0, 0 and all other references in the formation are taken from her. unit.1=HMS Intrepid, 0, -1000 shows Intrepid is directly behind Fearless at 1000ft. The rest is easy!!

EDIT: Incidentally.. the problem Zsolt had yesterday related to the model he was trying to use. It was a pilotable model living in Airplanes so AIC couldn't see it. He's sorted now;)

I don't remember what was on the sim cfg's for the Tarawa's, probably just the enclosed ships, no formations. You can just
dump it in the aiCarriers folder, and they'll show up. I put all my AI stuff on individually titled cfg files, EG: US CV's, US surface combatants, IJN-JMSDF, RFN, RN CV's and RN surface combatants, soviet ect, ect. It keeps the cfg files from getting hairy, makes trouble shooting easier. Particularly now a days, with the plethora of AI warships and carriers of the past couple years. The last time I looked, I think I had close to 600 ships in there, in addition to the default, though many of those have been replaced. Quite a change from the situation just a couple of years ago. Now, we're scupper deep in ships.

Just a note about AICarriers: There is a newer version out that uses MUCH less in the way of computer resources than the original. It may be DL'd here: http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php/topic,11293.msg86978.html#msg86978
It was coded by a man named Orion Lau the FSDT forums. I strongly recommend using it instead of the original. It's functionality is identical to the original, but it utilizes the .NET Framework, rather than the Java runtimes the original uses.
All the .cfg files included, or created, for AI ships for the original, work exactly the same. Just drop them into the conf.d folder. I keep a subfolder in the conf.d folder so I can easily swap formations in and out as I want to use them.
By the way, AICarriers also permits you to set any ship placed into motion, with a default speed of 25kts. It also lets you turn them, stop them, whatever. Once the ship is placed, hit SHFT+J again, and you will get another menu pop up with the movement choices on it.
Also, I like to have it start automatically using the EXE.XML file included with FSX. I'm lazy :encouragement:
Good luck, and have fun!

The RFA Rovers were pulled from a static set originally and converted to AI (it's in the library here.. FSX_Modern_Expansion or something very similar) and the individual hulls were painted up. For some of the others.. I use Henrik's T2's. Canberra and the Sir's are courtesy of another sim and as such.. are unavailable I'm afraid. Damn shame as the author was contacted but no reply was ever received.

I have a 'close-in' version of that TG which covers a lot of water but the one posted is the extended version and takes a lot of time to fly around!!

While were about it, here's an update for the Rover class RFA. I stuck an ensign back on. The old one had an incompatible animation, so; pfffst! crumpled up.
Can't get rid of the stub that's left, but some clever texture diddling might hide it. Looks a bit better, though. I also replaced the fonts on the pad identifier and the pendant number with a more accurate font- RAF PW- though the name and registry are the same-close enough and the PW font isn't small enough. The font set is in the library here. If anybody wants them.44897

Cheers Laz:encouragement:

Your first conversion was/is definitely fit for purpose and features in pretty well all of my RN formations. I've always wondered about the size of the model.. nothing you've done in the conversion. It always seems just a little big.
Ship side numbers are a law unto themselves and not an available font. Ripoffs of decal sheets are the easiest way to go. For deck letters.. agree that RAF_PW is close enough. Bow and stern names are impossible without doubling the size of the map.

Here's a quickie of your first conversion with side numbers changed and funnel black at a jaunty angle rather than horizontal..

Yeah, I keep wondering about the size, too. They didn't strike me as overly large ships, but I was looking at the fit of the seathing on the deck.
461x63', not huge but still hefty. I'll have another go at it. I'll make a full sized ruler up, export that, lay it in with the model and see.
Never thought of that before. I ran into the same deal with the St.Laurents and Sulaco. Built right to the book dimensions, but they looked about 10% too small compared the the Virtavia Seaking and Dropship when I got them in sim.
The Tarawa's should go in the library, too, but I've not been able to smoke out Al Webber. Sooner or later. This is the first time in ages I've been able to get into the library, so I'm uploading and updating there. More latter, then.

I've been looking for some way to measure the Rovers in MCX (or any other way) for a long time but failed and gave up. Today.. a light shone (though not a very bright one)!!!

Here's an overhead shot with Fearless alongside as a comparison. I have to assume that DaveG got his measurements right as the LPH's scale well against other units and helicopters.
http://daveb.cbfsim.org/public/comparison1.jpg

Now the hard facts..
HMS Fearless
Length 520ft(158.5m) overall
Beam 80ft
RFA Rover class
Length 461ft
Beam 63ft

EDIT: added another shot with post refit Victorious on the other side..
http://daveb.cbfsim.org/public/comparison2.jpg
Length overall: 743ft
Flight deck width: 145.9ft

Quite a bit of air needs letting out the AOR!!:biggrin-new:

The boundingbox gives a length of 105.45 + 108.432 = 213.882m

Scale corrected. I drew a rectangle at 461x63, exported it, counted grids, scaled, merged the yard stick to check. Is the length and beam quoted taken at the waterline, as usual practice? Anyway, I went with waterline dimensions. About as close as I can make it.

Hello mate..

Beam is usually waterline (you will only get one measurement) but length is open to negotiation. Fearless/Intrepid are listed as 520ft overall and 500ft waterline. I couldn't find a waterline measurement for the Rovers but this will pull it into line. Off for a look now and thanks for taking this on regardless:encouragement:

EDIT: Had a look and she looks MUCH better now. Thanks ever so:encouragement:
One very small point.. RFA's fly the Blue Ensign not the White Ensign but I'll have that changed in 2 shakes of a very small lambs tail;)
Edit:2.. Further to the above.. the original had a White Ensign on the map which didn't display so it wasn't your doing.

This file will update the White Ensign on the Rover AOR to a Blue Ensign. Simply open the zip and drop the .dds file into texture and texture.1 letting it overwrite;)

BlueEnsign (http://daveb.cbfsim.org/public/Blueensign.zip)

Anyone who downloaded my AOR set will be pleased to know it works fine on Laz's latest update. Just drop the Blue Ensign file into each texture folder and you're sorted;)

Rounding this off.. here's what the scaling Lazarus has done looks like 'in sim'...

http://daveb.cbfsim.org/public/aor1.jpg
The size change has put the stern position out a wee bit with wake fx being used causing the wake to appear in front of the model.

This is with it pulled back from 100 to 50..

Looks great now doesn't she. As a personal preference, I've pulled out of the water a little too since those shots. Static position is now 8.

That looks a whole bunch better, Dave. Thanks for jogging the old meat HD. Forgot about the fx cfgs, but you've got that sussed. That's got me to thinking about the Queen Lizzie's. I started an update on those a while back, now I've some further tweeks in mind, and I never did get the PoW sorted. Some kind of weird grunch at the end of the ramp if I remember correctly. Is the RN going to get their carrier, or did cameron manage to sell them to china in return for another million jihadi's :a1451: before moving into junkers basement?

Queen Elizabeth is afloat and fitting out. Commissioning is still due 2017 AFAIK. All seems to have gone quiet as far as the F-35's go so we may have to buy back all the Harriers we sold to museums:biggrin-new:

The Cavour from FS Shipyards has a similar problem & solution.
Once the platforms are merged into the rest of the ship and the white deck deleted, the whole ship needs to be moved back 10m for the platforms to work properly.
Strangely the white line still causes a crash, it needs to be isolated, dropped 1mm and merged back in!
The remaining problem is the flickering lift which I don't think is fixable with MCX.
Haven't tried it as AI but working fine as static scenery (exported at Crashbox Granularity 4)
