I heard they have an area for seaplanes including the Hawaii Mars, sure would like to see that area.

Moses03,

Yeup...that's the one I saw today during the airshow...she's a beaut!

Huub,

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to reestablish contact with either Stovall or Roger Wilco. I tried to arrange them seeing my cousin in I fly in the Ford Trimotor, and I left a message on his phone to that effect, but we never crossed paths again or made further contact, and I'm off to see Lambeau Field and then head down to Germanfest in Milwaukee tomorrow.

Thanks for the video link, as I've never seen one of those fly. Now, if A2A would make an expansion pack for their T-6...hmmm. ;)

Thats a pity Rami as we haven't that much possibilities to meet fellow members face-to-face. But I'm convinced you will have a great time any way!

Enjoy it!

Thanks guys, it is absolutely great here. I have never seen anything like this before. Such a large assembly of flying warbirds, unbelievable. I also flew with the B18 Aluminum Overcast two days ago. What a great experience.

@ huub: we are working on a photo of us.

It looks as though there are two oil trails leading from the Mars engines to the left, unless it has just stopped and the water still stirred up.

There are a few look-alike P-64's flying around, built from T-6 airframes, but the EAA's example is one of only two true/original surviving P-64's, and it is great to see it flying again (the only other original example is mounted to a pole outside a museum in Peru).

BTW, for those who were hoping to see the A-20 Havoc at Oshkosh (as it was planned to attend), unfortunately on the flight to Oshkosh early this past week, it had an engine failure about 100-miles out from Oshkosh. It was able to safely make it into a nearby airport, but was scratched from attending.

Pretty cool that there were four Skyraiders in attendance this year, and three F-86's (there were supposed to be four, but I heard one had to drop out last minute - the same one that used to be at Duxford and was supposed to debut at Oshkosh last year). The photos/video of the newly restored Mig-17 flying at Oshkosh are pretty sweet too. The restoration of Pat Harker's (C&P Aviation's) massive Stinson L-1 was finished just before Oshkosh, and it has to be one of the top contenders for the WWII Grand Champion Award (it is only now the second flying example in the world - Kermit Weeks of course is the owner of the other one). There is also a very nice newly restored rear swivel-gun and practice bomb-toting Pensacola-marked SNJ-5, the Collings Foundation's original Temco TF-51D, and the Tri-State Warbird Museum's RNZAF combat-vet P-40M, all debuting at Oshkosh this past week, and all capable of winning some awards.

Meeting all these interesting people also was fun. Among them were Patty Wagstaff (see below), Bob Hoover, Bud Anderson, and many others like the crews of the warbirds and all kinds of spectators like us.

Also being able to get close or even into the warbirds was spectacular.

It was a tremendous experience.

Sorry for being a little slow with the pictures. I have over 1000 pictures from the week on two cameras.

That shows commendable restraint: I had over 700 on one camera from a single day at Duxford. What a week at Oshkosh would have yielded I dare not think!

Hairyspin,

Here are some of mine. I took about two-thirds his number in two days...like a kid in a candy warehouse. That's the wonderful part about digital photography...I just wish I had Tom or Mark's camera equipment.

I got both F-4 Phantoms in the same shot taking off by guesstimating their takeoff point on the runway, angling where I thought their line of departure would be, and just held the camera button down for a couple of seconds. It was pure luck.

I made 240 in the whole week, which is an exceptionally high number for me. But then again, I'm into medium format analog film, and every capture is a lengthy process to execute.

Here's one of The B-25J Panchito. The crew invited us to check out the cockpit and the rest of the crew stations inside the aircraft, man, that was a treat and I wish we had a B-25 up to todays standard in our sim. The Vertigo thing looked so promising, a pity it stalled.

Sorry for the crystal specks in the image below, I have to find a way of getting rid of them. It was shot in ADOX CMS20 120 type roll film, and the original foto has around 100 megapixels.

Gut gemacht!

Seeing all these pictures brings back fabulous memories of being with Mark and Andrew at Oshkosh. What we need is a SOH booth at Oshkosh each year where we can all gather and talk about flight simulation. I know I am a dreamer but wouldn't that be fun.

Tom,

Forget dreaming. That could be an important path to sustainability that we've been discussing. Think of how many kids and young adults go to that show. It ain't just old farts. :costumed-smiley-034

Just think, we could get a grant from Lockheed Martin and set up computers with Prepar3D to show the kid about flight simulation and SOH. The kids would go home and become flight simmers and SOH members. Just to share a moment, while visiting the USCG display of multiple aircraft I met a LCMR in front of the MH-65. It turns out Charlie was the pilot. When I mentioned Prepar3D he said he got his flight training on P3D. I asked if he ever heard of SOH and he mention he visited the site all the time. I asked who the moderator of the FSX forum was and he said "some guy by the name of stovall." I smiled. His eye got big and he asked, YOU? I said yep. We became instant friends. With that Charlie had Roger-Wilco-66 and I sit in the MH-65 and MH-60 Jayhawk cockpits with helmet in hand taking pictures. What a moment. Charlie said he would get back to me with pictures so I could make scenery for USCG Sitka, Alaska. He also supplied the link to an in cockpit cam for the MH-65 flight at Oshkosh. Click HERE. Paiken,

Nope, not on your life. I gladly sacrifice a Cheesehead and a Packers jersey to Tom Brady and Pat the Patriot every year before the opening kickoff. I also burned those clothes when I returned to Boston. :p87:

But you don't disrespect another team's home turf.

A flightsim / SOH booth sounds like a great idea! Lockheed had flight simulator at Oshkosh for their new T50A jet trainer. Everytime I went by I peeked inside, but that line of people waiting was too long for me. I'm sure a SOH booth with some simulators would be an attraction. Maybe then people wouldn't fall asleep during those boring non-warbird show performances, Tom hear me (happended to me, too)???? :-)

Thanks for those Rami, flying in the Tri-Motor must be as close to raw aviation as paying passengers get these days. I have a shade over 14 megapixels to play with, but Roger is obviously using something I need to use more - a tripod. 'Specially when using the tele zoom at full stretch! I notice y'all use a big aircraft wing the way we do in the UK, as an alloy umbrella. :biggrin-new:

They worked these two Trimotors very hard, they were constantly in the air all week. Amazing performance for such an oldtimer. From me, too, thanks to Rami for the photos. I'm sure you loved that ride. Next time I'm in 'kosh I'll go for a ride, too!

Great photos and stories, guys!

I think the Tri-Motor operations surprise a lot of first-timers for how much they are used - with the exception of non-flying hours, they are hardly ever on the ground throughout the week. The EAA's Tri-Motor has actually recently just come off of an extensive overhaul: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDBQxVTfsao

The other Tri-Motor that EAA is currently using, due to the demand, is on loan to them from the Liberty Aviation Museum (which also has another Ford Tri-Motor under restoration to fly, in addition to the B-25 "Georgie's Gal" and TBM Avenger they operate).
