~S~ All
With the Zone going away for CFS1 and CF2 I would like to invite all who still fly these two great sims to give the Zone a good sending off.
I think the Weekend of 20, 21, 22 January will be good.
If anyone has any thoughts or comments pls post.
So lets see how many ppl we can get on the zone for those three days, so spread the word.
I am not talking about a one nighter either but all three nights..

I also posted this at the CFS 2 Forum;
Seasons Greetings,
Let me start by saying that I have never played online. Not that I haven't thought about it. I've even been to the Zone for a look see, several times... Dial-up and all of the above excuses for not joining in apply. [Where's the CHICKEN smilie?]
Granted, I haven't a clue what it would take, but wouldn't it be great if there were links HERE for various levels of CFS 1 & 2 MP, or while we're dreaming of a Christmas wish list, all of the sims here at SOH?
How about a MP Forum for those looking for a quick game or a specific place to talk about it?
Or better yet, what is the feasibility of having MP Rooms for SOH Members only? That way we could keep out the cheats. Heck, while we're at it, why not have a room for Cheats and Mods? With all of the Technical Wizards around here, it seems that anything is possible or does the cost put it way out of reach?
Just a few thoughts.
Happy Holidays to all.

I'll try to be there and see if I can get some of the oldtimers to be there too!
you give me heartwarm laughter CK as my 'handle' in CFS was "OldTimer"
but if you folks will bear with me as i babble on, i will tell you of the best memory i've had with the zone MP.
like all or most of you i have flown with many squadrons on the zone and enjoyed their company. i've seen many a 'sunrise' thru the windows of my house and heard many a complaint from wife at 1AM in the morning to tell me to go to sleep. memories.
before i get into 'other' details of what happened to ....
let me tell you about the most exciting, memoriable and satisfying fight i ever had.
joined a random FFA with about 8 pilots going all out but with restricted ammo.
i did my part for the most part but watched two guys called "Uber 1 and Uber 2" take down every other fighter; and those killed would leave the Ready Room immediately,....ticked off i presumed. i was left alone with these two "Ubers"..and not much ammo left.
from the way they fought i knew they must've been on some sort of radio communications, now called Roger Wilco, as they seemed well coordinated in their tactics.
so it ended up with just me and the two of them.
a lot a Split-Ss involved.
i'd get on one's six closing, and with limited ammo would just take a burst and get some minor hits; before i would 'hat switch' back and see the other on my butt. another adreneline Split-S to go after the one on my six,,,,all the while the other one would come back to get on my six. my hat switch had a lot of work done that night.
i was like a base-runner in a baseball game caught between 1st and 2nd base running back and forth trying to avoid be tagged out. i kept running back and forth.
i tried everything in my memory book of tactics. side-slips,... dang, now i forget, some 90 degree turn after rolling then twisting the stick to roll and end up in a 90 degree turn, some kind of 'tumble' move, [memory fails me] but it was mostly just a bunch of endless Split-Ss as i would pursue one and the other one would be pursuing me.
after about 20 minutes of that 'back and forth',...remember it was 'limited' ammo, they messaged me to return to the Ready Room. not many if any shots were fired. it was mostly if not all,... a 'maneuver' thing.
there i was graciously and proudly acknowledged for my skills on giving them a hard time,...and offering me an invite to join their group.
since i was near burnout with CFS, i stupedly declined their offer. really stupid as they were very skilled. i still regret declining their offer to this day, even tho i'm still burned out by combat. but i wish i knew them.
but it was one 'hummer' of a fight.
i feel proud of how i did that night.
i was not shot down but was very tired.
as for cheats i look at it two ways. yes there are cheats that use 'autofollow' and other weird stuff; but i don't think its cheating when you use a more realistic bird in combat that is "not stock"....gad do i hate that word because it offends many honest designers who bust their butts building real birds. its just a matter of changing your config file to allow being seen by others,....if they make the same change to their config file.
in the now defunct Thunderbirds scored-competition room, as 'OldTimer' i scored 465 out of 3 thousand-something pilots signed up.
i held my position most of the time. yes there were times when a pilot would automatically be on my six after we made a high speed head-on pass, and i knew what was happening.
but for the most part, folks who entered the Thunderbirds room were honest. can tell many stories of tactics tried by opponents that i knew about. really surprised them when i recognized them. of course there were times when i was honestly beaten and i admitted so....and asked what i did wrong...and received a good critique.
CFS has given me much fun and memories i will never lose.
i hope you guys enjoy yourself for one last flight. i can't because i got this new daggame XP machine that won't recognize my SW FFB stick profiles that were intuitive by feel use.
just one last story and i'll let you go.
flew a Brit bomber with a Brit squadron [as a last minute 'volunteered bomber pilot...gulp!] and shot down a few attackers as rear gunner, front gunner, all around gunner. lol,..the rest of the squadron messaged 'don't get near Oldtimer as he is firing at anybody within range". this was with using TG2. a cheat as some folks would say.
but i was hit in the right engine,...smoking like hell and didn't know how to feather it,..and after the bomb run had to get over the last mountain top to land at that neutral Swis landing field to complete the mission and win for the squadron.
everybody was telling me to bail out.
no way. i jettisoned fuel [a cheat?], put some flaps on, and barely scraped the top of the mountain and made it over. i was repeatedly being told to bail out.
i brought that sucker down over the water and around for a perfect line-up and landing,...with the engine smoking.
i know i've talked a lot. it comes with old age.
i'l like to hear some of your stories and experiences.
i've got a ton of them since CFS came out in 98 and i burned out in 2003 or was it 4.
gotta add that i flew regularly with some fun group in FFA that was just pure fun. of course some 'outside jocky' pilots would take advantage of the 'open' atmosphere and start 'spraying and praying' with their ammo. the host, i wish i could remember his name would announce/demand everybody return to ready room and change the parameters to limited ammo and such. it got rid of the dirt balls who interfered with our honest fun. it was really fun and a lot of jokes. i wish i could remember his name.
Best Regards and Wishes,
btw, to that person who hasn't flown MP, sorry i can't remember your name at the moment,...but i have flown with folks from England, Poland, Canada, Peru, Hawaii, Mexico, US,.[i'm sure i'm forgetting some]..i'm still trying to remember other squadrons over the years that i talked with using Roger Wilco....no offense to Brits, but when i first joined they all sounded like John, Paul, Ringo and George....lol! we had a witch of a time trying to understand each other....memories. they all sounded like the Beatles.

Very immersive stories there!
My first squad in CFS1 was the classic _82nd_ (still well known by those who still hang out on the Zone) and I remember endless hours of just formation practice. I used to have a great shot of me leading a 4 ship formation of Bruno Duffort's Corsairs over Interlaken, the 4 of us in a Diamond formation.
So many screenshots I wish I still had....

Hey EdPhilly,
Hope you are well. I never was much into the multiplayer stuff as you probably know. I do have two CFS1 machines set up in my living room though. Carolyn and Michael were fighting too much over the one machine down there so I was forced to do put a second machine there. Michael doesn't talk much but he has figured out how to turn on the computer, start up whatever game he wants and then to properly shut the machine down and turn off all the other accessories. I even painted up a Ki-61 I built with a green spinner because he likes green so much. I also have a magazine article you might be interested in.

Its sad to see the end of CFS1 on the zone. Since Im on dialup, its one of the few games I can play online with no problems concerning connection speed.
I have many good memories of flying on the zone with various groups of folks. My first squad was Casador squadron, which casador is Spanish for "hunter". That was a great group of guys, they still fly on the zone occasionally. Then I moved on to what I consider to be the best online flight simulation squadron that has ever existed. The Eagle Squadron. :ernae: I have enjoyed being a part of that squadron, and will continue to be a part of that squadron as long as it exists. I met many great CFS flyers thru eagle squad, including H_Squad, Kamel Kings squad, and JG and 314th squads. Even though we Eagles are moving on to the IL2 Pacific Fighters sim, we still remain true to our roots, we still fly CFS1 alot. I will try to see if I can get a bunch of Eagles together to fly on the aforementioned dates above.

Hey EdPhilly,
Hope you are well.
- Ivan.
Hi Ivan,
thanks for the inquiry. things are usual as usual. i still remember our modem to modem air battle where i made a complete arse of myself with spraying and whatnot. i became very proficient after that.
but i finally burned-out with combat flying or any type of flying [after so many years from 1998] after i bought a new machine et al.
i watched a tv documentary about British pilots who burned-out. they had a special name for them [can't remember it now],...as the film showed them just mopping the floors in the messhall; and looked like they had a lobotomy.
but i still enjoyed your company in the air and the birds you designed. i still haven't transferred any stuff from my old machine to new one.
i even burned-out with competition pistol and longgun shooting. i did take my guns out and oiled them. but i doubt i'll ever use them again. same goes for my reloading machine.
you take care now, ya hear!
Best Regards,
Ed
yeah, my grankids use their Dad's extra machines and i'll give them my old one whenever i transfer stuff
it is sad to see the zone go away. it gave me so many hours of enjoyment and fulfillment
ok, just one more story and then i won't bother you all. during one [or more] FFAs, when i was hit bad, i would dive to ground level and hug the ground. i would put down my undercarriage [to bounce off the ground if need be] and just skim the earth while doing side-slips/whatnot. many a pursuing pilot would crash behind me.
they would call me "Die Hard" instead of OldTimer because they would exhaust their ammo and couldn't kill me. it would be exhausting. but i took that as a compliment because i was running for my life.

Hey EdPhilly,
Been a while since I was in this thread. I did not follow it much since I really don't fly multiplayer except to see how planes look to the other guy. I was home with Michael yesterday and he seemed to really like the Spitfire Mk.IX I am building. Pity, I built the Ki-61 especially for him to have a pretty plane to fly.
I still remember the modem to modem air battle that was not sposta be an air battle at all. If I remember right, I landed a couple hits on you in the first fight after a long extension and a Immelmann. I also remember that a month or so later, we did exactly the same thing and I couldn't get a shot at you at all. I don't think you shot me either though. I remember watching your plane bounce all over the sky like it was dancing. I didn't think a plane could do that! ;-)
I figure we were about an even match back then. I know I haven't gotten any better for lack of practice (and the time to do so) but you definitely have. Pity you are not interested in the game any more. I have a pretty neat setup in my living room for a direct head to head game. Only problem is that the kids generally won't let anyone have both of those machines at the same time.
I can still remember you asking me to demonstrate a carrier landing over at your place. I lined up nicely from about a mile or two out and came in with a nice flare and dropped it on the deck. (I am guessing you might have been impressed.) That was the best carrier landing I ever made. I tried it again later and could not plant one so well to save my life!
I have a magazine sitting here in my office that you might be interested in. People - May 2005. It has been sitting here since it was current. Give me a call if you want to pick it up.
I haven't done much shooting either in the last year or so. I keep up the memberships, but don't generally have the time. I haven't done any reloading either. Pity. It is a nice hobby.
That bouncing on your landing gear trick is somewhat unrealistic as I see it. The wheels should rip off if you drop them at too high of a speed, right? You know the deal, I am into the "Simulation" side of the game. I don't know if we ever were able to agree on that.... Just like we never much agreed on anything shooting related.
Oh well, I hope the usual as usual is pleasant.
Do say "Hi" to Mrs. EdPhilly for me.
Take care.

naah, wheels will not rip off, not if you just know when and how low you are to just try a timid landing and bounce along or just smooth run on the ground. just like a timid touch-n-go.

Hi smilo,
what Ridge says is about right. i'll try and look up the commands for locking-it in place. i had it programmed in SW profile, which is lost now.
but when i activated it...all i had to do was quickly 'resize' it [smaller]....and drag it where i wanted it; either in the middle-top or right hand side and just click on the main visible screen to lock it there.
man, you makin' me think back years. LOL
i know i had a devil of a time figuring it out.
Ridge, feel free to jump in anytime buddy.
but i also found that using a second 'old' 15" monitor [side by side with newer monitor, that i could drag the 'rear view full screen mirror to it but that it slowed my machine.
the Bearcat had a space for a mirror but when resized-down to fit, it was too small.
take care,
Ed
another view of a larger mirror. ahhh, i found a snapshot of the SW profile.

smilo,
good catch! it's a special clock that i added that you can change time of day with. you can even dial-in the wee-hours of the morning to get a dark sky. i'd have to dig thru my utilities to find it and where i got it from.
the Snake Eyes thing [another add-in utility] is to protect against so-called cheats who modify their air-files and are 'not stock'. it was used a lot on the zone in the rooms that specified 'stock only'. if it lit up you could popup a menu of players and boot the offender.
see attached pix of a Brunhost [off-line multiplayer] mission where i was testing gun convergence. Snake-Eyes lit up because the 'bridge marker'...a HE-111 or something was not stock.
a lot of my stuff don't mean nothing since the zone closed down. (sigh)

may i add just one more pic from a Fighter Pilot's handbook that taught me a lot about reading the turn and bank gauge when shooting. it used to be a classified handbook.

Yeah, built one for my grandsons (I have three). A souped Spitfire airfile, and a Wraith dp. Nasty little bastard. Lately on of the six-year olds has shown very good flying skills. He flies the real Wraith, now. Still crashes the X-wing, but then, that's a real bitch to fly.
Well, will look into reviving IP games when I get some more time.

Funny about the Spitfire. My son initially prefered that plane as the "Gray" airplane. Since then, he seems to like the Ki-61 that I built specifically for him. I think it is the flourescent green spinner on the Ki-61 that he likes. I still have not figured out how to explain to the kids that the green spinner is on one computer but not the other. The Ki-61 is really no match for Spitfire IX that I built that is currently using the stock AIR file, but there really is no "Fighting" going on except for who gets to use the machines.

Ivan,
try this to the combatfs.cfg files on both of your machines. both machines "must" have the changes else it won't work. it is a thing i learned while flying MP with folks who had different birds in their hangars. do the 'allow plane model send and receive, and allow texture send and receive'
[MULTIPLAYER]
TICKS_PER_SYNC=90
TIME_BETWEEN_PACKETS=250
COLLISION_SECS=1
FOLLOWING_MULTIPLIER=5
ALLOW_PLANE_MODEL_SEND=1
ALLOW_PLANE_MODEL_RECEIVE=1
ALLOW_TEXTURE_SEND=1
ALLOW_TEXTURE_RECEIVE=1
the attached pic is of a friend flying a custom P-38.....that i didn't have in my hangar. the other is of a guy from Peru flying some kind of Peruvian jet i didn't have.
Ed
ps - there is an actual menu selection similar to above in Flight Simulator so that others can see birds not in their hangars.
Ivan
March 3rd, 2006, 11:29
Hi EdPhilly,
I am not sure this would help because both computers have the same plane. Only one texture file differs between the two computers. I think those ARE my current settings.
Regarding competition, I guess the Ki-61-II has to get built soon to make this an even fight.

you won't know unless you try!!! LOL! and check your settings fer sure!!
you're starting to sound like my son who will take more time to discuss something longer than it would for him to just try.
i now include an excerpt from a forum post just so you know its not my idea....
SEE OTHER AIRCRAFT EVEN IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE PLANE OR IT'S TEXTURES
There is a setting in combatfs.cfg that will allow you to "see" other pilot's planes and the plane's textures even if you don't have that particular plane. Here's what you do:
Open the Combatfs.cfg file in Notepad.
Scroll down to the [MULTIPLAYER] section.
Change the "0" after the equals (=) sign in the following lines to a "1" as shown below:
ALLOW_PLANE_MODEL_SEND=1
ALLOW_PLANE_MODEL_RECEIVE=1
ALLOW_TEXTURE_SEND=1
ALLOW_TEXTURE_RECEIVE=1
Save the changes to the Combatfs.cfg file. That's it...
This is great for "squad" meets, as everybody will be able to "see" everybody else's plane and textures. NOTE: In order for this to work, especially in "multiplayer" mode on the Zone, EVERYBODY in the game must have these lines changed
have a great day!

.. only shows a green spinner. The other only shows a blue one. - Ivan.
sheesh!
a green spinner and blue spinner. takes me back to two instances of color viewing; since blue and green can almost be the same to one's eyes.
first instance,....my Pop had eye problems and when visiting him, his color tv would look just about all green. when he left the room, me and family would adjust the color to normal. he would change it back when coming back in. i'll dismiss that one as you ain't that old. LOL
second instance,.....when i visited son back in the CFS days, his monitor was not color-adjusted to what i'm used to. after he lightened it up, the birds i had looked identical.
could you maybe post screenshots of both birds from both machines for examination? not only for the color but other tailored changes you made to the birds to see if they are there. i'd like to see if other than color, any tailored markings, etc. are showing up. in other words, are both monitors set up the same way.
Ivan,
this truly puzzles me.

The green spinner was painted a flourescent green especially for Michael. It is NOT an error. I only repainted on one machine though which happens to be one of the machines connecting for multiplayer. The screenshots will prove less than interesting. You do have an invite to stop by and see for yourself if you want.

~S~ Lonestar,
There are some who play on gamespy, not in the numbers you remember from The Zone and still a few who play at hyperlobby. But most of us are flying IP in squads.
I am in a squad that is quite active. If your interested we fly quite a bit on the weekends as a Squad and several of our guys get together during the week for flights.
The main group is the 57th Bomber Squadron which has a Allied Wing and Axis Wing.

Wow...I guess it had to come, though I can think of several reasons to keep it open. CFS is like no other "game" I have ever seen or "played". My times on the Zone was in the very early days after CFS's 1st release, and it was a mad-house. But it was OUR madhouse, cheating and all.
My time there ended when more players whined than ask how to get better once they were beaten. I never joined a Squadron due too lack of time and a desire to fly as I wanted to fly...dogfighting mano y mano, whatever setting you like.
My best times were right here...sort of...the original CFC was a very special place filled with very special people. For me, THAT is what made the game great...it was the superior level of people you found involved with it. Why in the old days, it was nothing to have a couple of actual combat pilots on IP with you...from all across the world...and oh, did we have big dreams! ANyone remember Trog talking about wanting to start web-communities like exist everywhere today? There were people here so far ahead of MS in this games development that the future could only be fantastic.
Then came CFSII...okay but something was missing...then CFSIII put the nail in the coffin didnt it. Yet the pure joy of flight and combat has kept the pulse going...the heart beating, and the Zone has been a major contributor to that.
I'll try to make it but the old register system was a nightmare...vbg...maybe its easier now days. I missing those early flying days when all this was new and fresh. The excitement was tangible and the fun long lasting for a guy under a lot of pressure in tough jobs. This was my way of letting go, refreshing my soul...I will never forget my first logon at the Zone and my first flight...would that I have that feeling one more time...peace...T
PS...I'll see if I can get the one and only "airdragn" to join us. For those that may not know, airdragn and family were the energy and force behind the 1st Annual CFS Convention in Lexington, KY. I bet he can still burn for me just like the old days!!!

How sad to hear that they are closing down CFS1 & 2 especially my favourite CFS1, I had heard that it had shut down sometime ago which one is correct or is it still open?
I like a lot on here, from what I have read in this thread used to be on it from around 2000\2001 same as I was, I was involved in a squad what was known as the TCS17 (The Cobra Squadron 17th) and although based in the UK we had members from the USA, Canada, Denmark and Germany and at our peak we had maybe 30 members, not huge but very good people, my 'handle' was TCS17Madmick don't know if you remember us, I was also, for my sins a M+ known as +Hypotoxin and I used to 'patrol' lol the gamerooms in the Zone with +Exemplo who was one of many whose names I can't recall, but as with most things it all died a death and interest waned and we went our seperate ways although I keep in touch with some of the former members....... this is until last week and I have reloaded it all back on again plus my extras have been in contact with some and we are looking at reforming the old squad so if you were a member get in touch I'd love to hear from you again and maybe set up a ip game ~Salute~

Recently I have looked into the WGC site .cfs1 and cfs2 . To be honest there is not a lot of activty there .I suggest we all start to use this site , other wise , perhaps this will close and they might give the same reason as when the zone closed .

Maybe for lack of interest, or people got tired of joining a game only to be cheated by some AH that has to win(?) at any cost, including his integrity.
If you still want to fly CFS Multi-Player, look us up on Sundays.
We don't cheat and we can still have a good time flying with and against each other.

I was told by those from the Zone it was because there is more money made from the many other games they host in addition to CD rom games there. The Flight and Combat sims did not justify their bandwidth.
It isn't a charity organization. Such is life and reality in the entertainment business. And, if you wonder how do they make money, consider the free Google and its' advertising revenue.
Take a look at the zone today. It seems as big as Ebay.

You know there were so many reasons for the zone closing , Those who play the AOE games had a full house ,some times at peak levels you could not get into the old zone because to many players were in there , you just had to wait untill some one left the zone before you could enter.
There fore the saying , there were not enough players goes out of the window
Today all those players have moved over to the new Games zone , nothing to do with the old zone but the same problems are there just to many people trying to play a game .
We have never had that amount of players.
The zone was old , If you look at the newer flight sims like cfs 3 and the latest fsX they have there own servers built in . Nothing wrong with that .
Today we do not have any of the hassle of bad words also the problem of those non existant helpers the Members +s.
It really was a shame the old zone closed but to be quite honest it just could not continue .I have read many reasons why they closed the old zone .
It really had a good run , But we must look forward to the future , We still can play each week with our friends online and we can choose who we want to fly with ,What is new , nothing other than we meet in a different place and we no longer have the hassles of those who liked to stop us playing .
