Seen this in 1953,Great Avation film..about DC-3s...Written by great Writer Ernest K. Gann..It kinnda got lost with other Block Buster Movies then..But I always remembered it....It was on TCM,once ..And my interest renewed...I got it for $6 or so bucks..and looking at it I realized this is a great Film ..with DC-3s the Star......The film follows a pilot and crew of a World War II (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II)-era Douglas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Aircraft_Company) C-47 Skytrain (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-47_Skytrain) (the military version of the DC-3 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC-3)) who try to survive after a forced emergency landing in the uncharted wildlands near the Quebec (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec)-Labrador (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labrador) border. The pilot, Dooley (John Wayne (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wayne)), is a former airline pilot, who, like many others, was pressed into duty hauling war supplies across the northern route to England. Icy conditions force the aircraft to land, and with the difficulties of navigating far from settled country, they can provide only an approximate position to rescuers.
After finding a frozen lake for a landing field, Dooley must keep his men alive while waiting for rescue in the extreme winter cold with temperatures plummeting to -70 °F. Meanwhile, at Air Transport Headquarters, Col. Fuller (Walter Abel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Abel)) gathers fellow airmen (played by Lloyd Nolan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_Nolan), James Arness (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Arness), Andy Devine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Devine) and Paul Fix (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Fix)), who are determined to find the downed crew before hunger and the winter do them in. Wellman provides internal narrative for the stoic characters. There is tension and a fear-filled meeting among the search pilots when no one is quite sure about what to do, since a wrong decision could doom the missing crew.
.Highly recommended...Great Cast ..Great DC-3 film...Thnx

where did you find it for six bucks?..i dont think i have this in my collection.id like to find it.first need to look at my john wayne collections first,ya know, those boxed films specials with 5 or 6 films to a DVD,i have one Noir collection with 100 movies on 25 DVDs,not the best quality, but watchable for me.and i dont care much for the new movies, maybe a comedy now and then,im not a big fan of millissa mccarthy, but the movie St Vincent ,with her and bill murray was pretty good..made me laugh outloud, and i even had a couple tears roll down my fat cheeks at the school thing where the boy talks about murray.....good movie,,but those fast and furrious movies, all the shoot em up govinator movies are terrible..as are most of the ones with bruce willis..he was good in moonlighting, hes pretty funny, but hes not very convincing as a tough guy,if one of his tough guy movie fellas wanted to fight me..id be all in....meaning that kind of guy doesnt make me think twice..nor do hells angels for that matter....lol..yup faught a few and im still here..lol.even had a run in with sonny barger back in the 80s,but even though i was booting him from the bar,i was respectfull ( i had no idea who he was even)and that made him stop and pause,,he took his coat (colors ?) off and told his two thugs to do the same, and they removed the knives they had on them.so i let them back in ,he told me he respected the fact i was respectfull..but very forcefull at the sme time,he ended up buying me several beers..lol..i wasnt working at the time.was actually havinf a couple beers with a couple cop buddies,,who just sat there and watched the entire thing..lol.

my sister and her slug (husband at the time) were wanna be bikers, even though slug had a hells angels cousin, slug (mike who was also a lifelong friend)couldn't quite be a biker,id seen him several times attempt to ride, scared him half to death,so each bike he got,he tore down claiming some problem, then he never put it back together, and then would sell it.he wanted me to go with he and my sister to a book signing and "picnic" where barger would be the celebrated book signer..mike claimed to know him since he was the head of the oakland chapter and all,his cousin was also with the oakland group and was some sort of officer,i don't claim to understand the hierarchy of the HAs,he also insisted i got through the line with him as slug was sure he would remember him,and that i was all wet with my claims of my run in with him.so we get to barger,he has no clue who mike was,but did a double take at me,didnt know my name,or where we had met,but he did remember i stood up to him and his and kicked them from a bar...lol..mike almost pee'd hisself..lol.mike had a knack for having personal relationships with people he'd never actually met, just happened to be in the back of a croud where some sprint car driver or someone would be talking to a croud of fans..yet mike would tell us it was he and the driver alone, and having a personal visit...used to really tick him off when id actually know the person he claimed to know..lol..like a guy named sammy swindell,he and i had gotten into an argument over a pitstall at placerville speedway in placerville calif,he ofcourse didnt know my name and what have you..but he remembered me well enough three years later that he shook my hand and was polite that time..lol.

hope this all didnt bore yall and wasnt intended to highjack the thread...im just in a mood, see i could just not post this..but im gonna.......pfffffffffffffffffffffffft :untroubled:

We all must have been thinking about the good old classic . I just pulled my copy out a few days ago but have not viewed it yet . I've probably seen this a half a dozen times and never get tired of it . What a cast ! John Wayne , Andy Devine, James Arness just to name a few .
