View Full Version : Siai Marchetti S-211 Project
Dino Cattaneo

As I am struggling to recover my work on the Eurofighter - and since I am getting quite frustrated with that - I was looking for new project to regain new motivation and momentum... So I contacted MyJet - a charter company based on the local airport - that also owns a SIAI Marchetti S-211... They were so kind to give me full access to the aicraft - and as result I started working on this.
The idea is to create a very detailed rendition of this aicraft and possibly (at a later date) its most recent derivatives by Aermacchi, namely the M-311 / M-345 (which is set to replace the MB-339 for the Frecce Tricolori).
The project will be compatible with both FSX and P3D. It will be most likely payware, although the price will be low... I will share more pictures soon, but I can tell you it is looking quite good so far!
I will resume work on the Eurofighter as soon as I'll find the will - will keep you update on that one too.

Great news !
Indeed a new project was probably the best idea to get you out of this frustration. Good luck for the developpment :)

Grazie Dino! Ottima scelta! Ho avuto modo anni fa di vedere un'esibizione in volo di questo jet : in effetti è una piccola belva.
Veloce e maneggevolissimo! E poi è Italiano , Buon lavoro:applause:

Good thinking Dino.
Instead of being continually frustrated attempting to recover previous work a fresh project is the best therapy.
I know, I have an MV Augusta still sitting in our workshop that I put to one side a few months ago........................:banghead:
But I have finished rebuilding a Fireblade and a Duke so my head is ready to go back to the Augusta.

Thanks for your support as usual...
M-346 is a very interesting machine - as also has significant capabilities in secondary roles. It has been on and off on my list as I know other developers were working on it...
The S-211 in the pictures is at walking distance for my office - which makes it an ideal subject.

That's great news! Is there any chance of recovering the MB 339 project or is that a complete loss?
Dino Cattaneo
May 31st, 2016, 03:35
As for the 339 the project was just started therefore I have not lost much.... basically just new texture templates with panel lines.
Problem with the 339 is that is a much loved aicraft here in Italy - so it needs to be done right as expectations would be incredibly high. I will probably do it, sooner or later, when I am in the mood for it.
As of today - a fresh start with the S-211 seems the best option.

That's awesome news Dino! Given how much I enjoy flying your T-45 I'm sure I'll be flying the wings off of this as well. Besides, how cool that they allowed you access to it as well. Thanks for the preview. :)

That's not a jet I know, but it looks like one I'd have fun with. Looks like it would be nice in a Yellowjackets or Red Sparrows paint too - much in common with the Folland Gnat. ;)

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable regarding airplanes of the world but I had nerve heard of this one. Looks like a great trainer and am looking forward to it.

Well, it is not a very popular plane... some 70 aicrafts have been buit, and it has been in service in Haiti, Singapore and Philippines. It was proposed by Grumman-Agusta (which owned the design at the time) for the JPATS program.
Most of the aircraft have been retired from military service, and went into private hands - there are some flying conditions around the world.
From what I understand it is a relatively cheap plane to operate and it is fun to fly.
Once Alenia/Aermacchi acquired the design rights it upgraded it with a new engine and new avionics... and it may have a fighting chance in the basic jet training market due to the fact it is inexpensive to operate.

The external model is almost done... and the VC should be ready by the end of September.
Hopefully we will get a Beta in October.

I remember reading an article several years ago in some aviation mag (Air Progress, maybe?) about a pair of S-211's that came on the civilian market and the author of the piece was given some time in the front pit, writing that it was a seriously nifty piece of aviation kit. I genuinely look forward to seeing what you come up with...

There are 3 airplanes from the FS9/FSX days that I truly miss flying now that P3D_V4 is all I have installed. Those are the AlphaJet, The AMX and the MB339. The S-211 is the answer to those forgotten aircraft and I look forward to the completion and release, whenever that happens to be. Thanks Dino!

As usual thanks for your support.
Apart from having one at the local airport (which needless to say it is a big plus) I think this project makes a lot of sense from several point of views - last but not least the fact that this aircraft is very well documented and the fact that it is enjoying a second life in private hands.
A couple of notes:
- Sticking to my "no fiction" rule, there will not be a tailhook version.
- Depending on time and resources the package may also include, right from the start, Aermacchi M-311 and M-345 (which are mostly the same aircraft, but with modern avionics, glass cockpit an minor modifications such as ventral fins... the final M-345 willl also have redesigned air intakes and nose section). Since documentation on the M-311/M-345 cockpit and interface is not publicly available, there will be some guess work there.
Anyway, here is the current external model... *ALMOST* finished!

Just a quick picture from a short test flight - Roy Holmes is doing the flight model and, as usual, he is doing a great job. Also, since this aicraft is extremely well documented (including performance data) the flight model will closely match the real world performance.

Needless to say the Frecce Tricolori livery is being worked on ;-) - I had to simplify a little the graphics of the underbelly mostly for resolution reasons...
Anyway, chance is the Frecce Tricolori model will have a proper M-345 3D model, including digital cockpit.

A 10 Aircraft M345 or MB339 PAN would be a nice thing!? but I fear polycount would make it difficult :(
Dino Cattaneo
August 30th, 2017, 04:10
...I played with that concept years ago. Fun...but there are a lot of limitiations.
Doing that with the S-211/M-345 model is basically impossible (well... a 3 ship flights might be doable, but with poor frame rate).

Hi Bjoern, would you happen to remember which volume had the engine decks in it? I have a couple volumes, but I really want that volume the most, as that kind of propulsion data is generally difficult to find.
Dino Cattaneo
August 31st, 2017, 04:57
Well, Roy Holmes is working on the flight model - and I believe he is using data from Roskam's book along with flight and performance manuals - as I said the aircraft is extremely well documented.
By the way here is a first glimpse at the cockpit - it will reflect the I-MJET layout, which is basically a late production cockpit but with some military avionics replaced by civilian equivalents (but I will bring back the armament panel).
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=53477&stc=1
For the record, other civilian users have significantly upgraded the layout with modern electronics:

"Engine decks"?
Those are what propulsion companies give aircraft designers to reference while designing aircraft. It's a table for a specific powerplant showing throttle setting, rpm, temp, uninstalled thrust, fuel flow, etc., for various altitudes(air densities). One of the volumes has some of those in them, but I haven't seen it since school back in the eighties and I don't remember the volume number.
Dino, thanks for the cockpit previews. I had no idea the civilian versions had those kinds of upgrades. I'll be happy with whatever panel you provide. :)

The product should be ready before the end of November (hopefully!)
