Pretty much the first 'skinning' eventuated when Nullsoft made a butt-ugly media player called Winamp ...and a guy called FLy7e 'hacked' the proggy to alter the bitmaps used, and opened up to the world the whole potential for GUI modification. Dedicated GUI and Shell mods/proggies came soon after as the idea caught on . The most enduring of these mods is Stardock's Windowblinds - a Shell enhancement, and possibly the most fun was had with LoneRunnr's 'LiteSTEP' - a shell replacement which you used instead of 'Explorer.exe' . At the height of GUI skinning there were quite a few sites dedicated to the process ...the first was, and the last still standing is Even started by Jark was originally for skinning initially...expanding to cater...

Awesome screenshot, Bob, I love it! The prop effect looks superb too. Just like there weren't two shark mouths in the AVG exactly alike, it seems that each checkerboard nose in the 78th was individually unique, as clearly illustrated by that gathering. (I need to finish up my updated version of "Buzzin Cuzzin" to join the group.) ; ) I did a little re-currency flight out of Duxford today in the mighty "Buch" (note the Catalina is getting ready for winter hibernation):

Welcome, I had to do the same last year with a new gaming rig allowing me to run both DCS and P3D. Immersion is key and even without VR yet, just Track IR I love taking the Tomcat to the boat and having to re-learn USAF style tanking in the F-16.

hi Ankor, a chap named Rob Bruce used to run a blog about is terrain creation efforts for CFS3. These comments may be of use/interest for you: "Creating a terrain mesh for CFS3 is relatively easy once you have source dem data. I use a spreadsheet to calculate the approximate bounds of the terrain data. The only numbers that ers2tiff.exe requires is the theatre origin, image pixel dim, image stride, max height, outX1, outY1 (terrain extents) and the number of images in the X and Y axes. The ers2tiff tool calculates the actual extents and theatre boundary from this information. This tool will automatically clip the supplied terrain to the appropriate size given the theatre minimum extent and the theatre origin. In CFS3 geographical co-ordinates are relative to the theatre origin i.e....

Spitfire 40 was my first flight sim. Played on a tape drive Amstrad. Couldn't wait for the tape to stop graunching away and I could see the pea green screen with a flock of tiny dots coming my way. A straight single line for a runway. Hitting the dots gave a surprising amount of satisfaction...

The reason the the AMD CPU and 570 chipset are so amazing, is that the CPU is stays cooler with a modular design, and it offer access to PCIe 4.0. Which basically doubles the bandwidth available....You can now open the flood gates from the CPU to a video card that can handle it.

The term skinner comes/came from my background in software. You skin an application. Heck theyre called winamp skins. UI developers will skin an application in UX widgets. It's not a literal use of the word. Either way the takeout is that in future a paintkit will be wires and ID. A repainter is going to be fine with that. A skinner might not but there are great sources on the internet ( Marcel here might be able to help plus the youtube video in this very thread ) that will help you paint from this point. And guess what you might enjoy it more as the outcome is purely yours and not some amalgam. You may even find that you'll find it more liberating.

Currently, there is only the KN628 model that takes advantage of the new PK 4K layout. Sent the PK files to Manfred and will see if anything needs developing further. Oh, reskinner or repainter or digital painter or artwork developer or graphics designer... :biggrin-new:
